King Crimson's Mk2 Trons

King Crimson's Mk2 Trons

2010-07-27 by nickhewitt25

If my info is correct, the photo put up by LSF5275 IS the ITCOTCK (and THRAK) MkII. The photo was taken by Robert Cervero in 1999 when he was invited to KC Central for the 30th Anniversary bash. The MkII in question is serial number 13. They also owned (still do) MkII, no.113, which was used on "…Poseidon". They also used a 3rd MkII in the US (locally hired?) for the 1969 tour, which (I believe) is on display in the Smithsonian.

The 2 white M400's (used live by the Boz/Wallace and Wetton/Cross line-ups - I saw the latter line-up 3 times in '72/3) were Serial Numbers 211 & 354. A little later, black 1199 was purchased and used live by Fripp from late '73 or early '74, though never in the UK. In 1993, he bought #1627 from Uriah Heep's keyboardist (Ken Hensley?) – this was the one covered in carpet. I believe that ALL the KC trons are stored with Streetly, but check with them. I've heard the story about KC flogging a MkII to Genesis, but I've been assured that this never happened. John Wetton DID acquire one of KC's 'trons (dunno which one), but that found it's way back into Fripp's ownership.

The fire at the Electric Playground in Chicago was rumoured to have been started by the mafia (the theatre being the target, not Crimson), and a MkII had its keys water-damaged by the local Fire Brigade.

The source of this info is Fripp's own on-line diaries (when he put all his trons up for auction), and info from Streetly via e-mail, though the latter data MAY be out of date.

Amazing!

I've heard the story about the "local" mellotron first hand a few months back. Might be a different tale but...

I was on tour across the states opening for Daltrey, we were in Maryland, and I was apporached by the director of the venue inquiring about the tron I was using, we got to talking and he showed me some very interesting pics on his computer. Apparently this guys band got offered an opening slot at KC shows in exchange for use of his tron. He showed me several scanned pics from through the years w KC. Some very funny, but I'm positive I remember the pics of him w his 400 and wetton. I also believed he mentioned something about late '69, "when he first met them"

Since that conversation I've been wondering, "where are the trons now?" Really exciting to see you guys have the answer! Think they'll get auctioned off anytime soon? ;)

To fill in some gaps that I inadvertantly missed (sorry), Fripp put up all his trons up for auction in 1999. They were as per the entries on his his diaries (look for yourself on dgmlive.com). Apparently, he received no "...adequate..." or "...suitable..." bids (my phraseology). I'm guessing that, due to the history of them, Fripp's looking for a helluva lot of money. Anyway, he didn't a bid he regarded as 'realistic', so he closed the auction in 2004 or 2005 and retained the trons. Apparently, Fripp owns 5 of the trons, so I'm guessing that the 6th is owned by the "King Crimson Company", whatever form that now takes.
I contacted Sid Smith in early 2007 to find out Fripp's attitude towards his trons in view of his inability to auction them off, and Sid personally told me (via e-mail) that Fripp "...HAD NO PLANS TO DISPOSE OF THEM"! I'm looking for an M400, which was why I asked the question in the first place.

I have a bit of a problem - the majority of M400's I've seen on sale have been in the US of A. I'm in MacUK, specifically Edinburgh, so shipping one across the pond will be financially prohibitive. Therefore, I'd like one that's on this side of the puddle. I know that there are 4 sitting in storage somewhere in Staffordshire, doing nothing, but the owner will want a phenomenal amount of money for them!!! I nearly bought Sigur Ros' M400 when the Tron Bros gave the Forum first refusal. I inquired as to the price, which was within my means, but I couldn't justify it to my missus. There is one member of this forum who has met my wife, so he would probably agree with that.

WRONG!!!!!!! - the MkII in question (serial number unknown) is now the property of the Robert Moog estate (his foundation?). It was on display somewhere at/near his home in Asheville, North Carolina, but is earmarked for a museum being built (if it hasn't already been completed). I lifted a rather poor photo of it off the 'net a while ago, but it seems to have been removed.

Forever Autumn and Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds was the only highlight from that time period. It's only a tiny bit insipid.

I always assumed that Hayward wrote the song or at least the lyrics but apparently not. (Jeff Wayne, Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass)

Hi all-
"Blue Jays" struck a chord with me at the time, so I kind of enjoyed it (at the time). Some of the songs were interesting, but the orchestrations were far over the top. Simplicity would've helped. I wondered what a bit of Pinder mellotron would've done for it? I hear some of it recently, and cringed a bit.

No, I've got machines to do both!!! On that subject, a couple of old jokes...

Q - what do you call something you screw on the bed and it does the housework?

A - the wife!!!

A young couple got married and left on their honeymoon. When they got back, the bride immediately called her mother on the telephone.

"Well," said her mother, "how was the honeymoon?"

"Oh, mama," she replied, "the honeymoon was wonderful! So romantic..." Suddenly she burst out crying. "But, mama, as soon as we returned, Sam started using the most horrible language - things I'd never heard before! I mean, all these awful 4-letter words! You've got to come and get me and take me home...... PLEASE MAMA!"

"Sarah, Sarah," her mother said, "calm down! Tell me, what could be so awful? What 4-letter words?"

"Please don't make me tell you, mama," wept the daughter, "I'm so embarrassed - they're just too awful! COME, GET ME, PLEASE !!!"

"Darling, baby, you must tell me what has you so upset...Tell your mother these horrible 4-letter words!"

Still sobbing, the bride said, "Oh, mama...words like: Dust, Wash, Iron, Cook...."

Hi again-
Oh, yeah, "Songwrighter", "The Promise", Lodge's "Natural Avenue" were all pretty bad. Didn't hear any of Ray Thomas' or Graeme Edge's stuff.
I liked the cover art on "The Promise", using colors produced from polarized light through crystals to produce a stained-glass look.

Hi all-
"Blue Jays" struck a chord with me at the time, so I kind of enjoyed it (at the time). Some of the songs were interesting, but the orchestrations were far over the top. Simplicity would've helped. I wondered what a bit of Pinder mellotron would've done for it? I hear some of it recently, and cringed a bit.

A lonely widow, age 70, decided that it was time to get married again. She
put an ad in the local paper that read:

HUSBAND WANTED:
MUST BE IN MY AGE GROUP (70's),
MUST NOT BEAT ME, MUST NOT RUN AROUND ON ME
MUST STILL BE GOOD IN BED!!!!!
ALL APPLICANTS PLEASE APPLY IN PERSON.

On the second day, she heard the doorbell. Much to her dismay, she opened
the door to see a Grey-haired gentleman sitting in a wheelchair. He had no
arms or legs.

The old woman said, 'You're not really asking me to consider you, are you?
Just look at you...you have no legs!

The old man smiled, 'Therefore, I cannot run around on you!'

She snorted. 'You don't have any arms either!'

Again, the old man smiled, 'Therefore, I can never beat you!'

She raised an eyebrow and asked intently, 'Are you still good in bed???'

The old man leaned back, beamed a big smile and said,

'Rang the doorbell didn't I?'

On the scale of Moody insipidness, all of those pale in comparison to

Anyone who covers MacArthur Park is OK in my book. It takes real chutzpah to do that song!

Story has it when Jimmy Webb wrote MacArthur Park no one would record it (The Association turned it down). So they found Richard Harris (a non-singing actor) to record it. The rest is history...

ho ho! I have "Classic Blue". It's a somebody-should-have-talked-him

I'm an Adrian Gurvitz fan (not so much his later stuff), so I have both GE's albums - the strength is in Gurvitz's contribution to the songs and he and his brother Paul's playing. Graeme's drumming is strong and not very Moody-ish.
And yes, there's tron on the Blue Jays album.

Just heard Webb interviewed on NPR several days ago. He said Harris (despite
verbal cues) continued to sing MacArthurs Park. So Webb gave up and accepted
that singer have quirks and will change lyrics despite the composers wishes.

Do you really stand by this?:

Aside from the weird lyrics, it's a great piece of music.

I can't find a redeeming moment! Loathsome and overlong.

Nice, thanks Dave; learn something every day. Had no idea JT or REM
covered this. Please don't tell me Slayer covered it.

It's a rainy day where I am. Going to go mess around with this. I can
hear an arrangement with 12 string, M400 cello and flute for the melody.
I can't sing at all. Need to finf my son for the flute part!

Hi all-
Shawn Colvin did a brief bit of "Wichita Lineman" in the middle of her live song "Wichita Skyline". Very appropriate.
The verse "and the Wichita lineman is still on the line" always bugged me. Sounds like he's listening in on a conversation. What is he up to?

Somebody in this forum mentioned Emitt Rhodes a few months ago. Although I vaguely remembered his name, I never listened to his albums that were released in the early 70's until just recently.

I look forward in seeing the movie "The One Man Beatles", if it comes to a theater near me.

She was after joining her two younger brothers in a trio. The first guy was rather chubby, and the other was the result of a tryst with a Mexican woman, so they were called: Doremi, Fatso, Latino.
