Favorite Tape Frame

Favorite Tape Frame

2007-12-18 by Bruce Daily

Hi, all-

Happy Holidays!

After refurbishing the mechanics & electronics on
ol' #1221, I am satisfied it isn't going to blow up.
In fact, it works pretty well (By the way, many thanks
to Frank Stickle, Jery Korb, and others for much
advice & help, I am very grateful).

It's time to consider another tape frame for the
beastie. I have the classic Flute/3 Violins/'Cello
frame, which runs well for now. Thought I would poll
everyone, and find out what your favorite 2nd (or,
3rd) frame voicing might be, and why. I would think
this question has probably been asked a few times in
the past, before I joined the group last March.

Thanks again-

Bruce Daily

Without a doubt you *need* the eight voice choir. (Russian choir is also
a good alternative and sounds a little more 'in tune', thanks to the
voicings)

You don't need string section because you can interpolate B and C on
frame #1 to give you that, but you *need* the Mk II Brass for a good
'bottom end' sound.

For the third sound I'd go with one of the newer line; maybe Fritz's
Chamber Woodwinds. That would give you three fairly contrasting voices
for frame #2.

Have a listen to the samples at www.mikedickson.org.uk/tron to see if
there is anything else that grabs you.

What about the split choir? One of the less horrible
m-tron voices.

Some pleading and shrieking, then not much of anything as I recall...

Re: Favorite Tape Frame

2007-12-18 by tomdcour

--- Since individual sounds and tastes vary widely I'll only say that i have a formula I
somewhat follow. I usually have a sound that I like to use for low end on A (like cello, pipe
organ or brass). I keep a string sound on B for chords and all around arranging. On C I like
a sound that's usefull for soloing ( oboe , trumpet, etc.) or sometimes a choir. I find this
helpfull in live situations where i won't be changing frames.

I’m also considering which tape sets to order for #872. I wonder if anyone has heard or owns the six track tape set?

RE: [newmellotrongroup] Favorite Tape Frame

2007-12-19 by Bruce Daily

Hi, all-

The 6 track set would SEEM to offer a combo of 2
voices for each of the 5 positions of the selector
switch. ("A" would be voices 1-2, "AB" would be 2-3,
"B" would be 3-4, etc.) I guess one would REALLY have
to like those combos, so, wise voicing decisions would
have to be made. Doubling would be easy, though, so
long as long as they are not too closely in-phase on
adjacent tracks. Yeah, it would be interesting to
hear a sample of this tape frame.

I have a set of six track tapes made up for me by Streetly so I could
demo them. They play like a charm. You obvously have to have a long
think about what tape sets you want to place on them, bu (from
experiments with a sampler) mixing the new 'Louise Davis' cello with sad
strings is a wonderful combination to start from.

Can you play 6 individual voices or just 3

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Favorite Tape Frame

One word on 6 track tape sets.  For them to work cleanly, it is important to have the headblock azimuth aligned as you will be hearing two adjacent tracks at any one time.  If the heads are out of alignment this will cause sonic hell.  A sort of phasey soup.  This isn't a sales plug, just to alert anyone thinking of track tapes that a potential problem exists.  You should all have your headblocks aligned anyway but definitely if you are going the 6 track route.

James,
I have one of the blended strings sets with contra bass voilins, string section 3 violins
and cellos. A whole string orchestra I tells ya. And on a new Streetly manufactured frame too boot!!
It's as close as a Dad with 3 children can come close to Santa

Only the m-tron carols I put in the file section of
the new group, I think "Oh little town of Bethlehem"
which has the solo contralto? with a mixture of the
split choir split plus the boys choir works ok but I
am not sure that anybody else agrees, not even my
wife, and the cat certainly wasn't impressed.

Re: [newmellotrongroup]Tis the Season....

There's one song with the lyrics ' when christmas comes'
that has mellotron flutes in it, and if they're samples, they sound quite good.

It sounds a little like a country Christmas song, with an acoustic guitar carrying most of the song,  probably recorded in the 90's or early 00's.

I have no idea who it is, but I've heard in a Wal-Mart a few times. Not bad for something that sounds like "country Moody Blues" (albeit with a much lower singing voice)
