Re: A Incredible new idea

Re: A Incredible new idea

2007-11-21 by lsf5275@aol.com

I was thinking that it might be fun in this forum to try something new.

How to fix up your Mellotron.

I'm thinking of topics on how to improve your Mellotron to make it the best it can be... step by step. There has to be a curriculum that we all follow, but the information would obviously be savable, so one might refer back to it at any given time. I am willing create to start this off. However, I fear that we run into the, "my way is better than your way," issue so I will be willing to offer my knowledge both publicly and privately. I'm into my 21st machine. There may be several good ways to resolve any Mellotron problems. I am willing to offer up what I know.

Any takers?

Yep.  All you need initially is two geeks, a 22 foot square space with a lathe, miller, driller, bench press, metal shearer and bender, a set of BA tools and Brian Soukal.  Once you have these in place we'll be ready to go!

Seems to me that to be of any lasting value, the information would have to be archived on the group page in the files section rather than just disseminated in periodic bursts to the group.  You'd want to have it as a searchable reference with titles and descriptions, and matching audio and image files of corresponding information stored in the other folders on the site, and links to places like YouTube where you could store informative video files.  A separate index or table of contents that was updated with every new addition would enable everything to be slowly collated into one long series of "articles" that would eventually become sort of a Mellotron wiki.

Mark, the problem with Wiki is that anyone can edit stuff at any time.
You don't want someone coming along and changing instructions.

using the "public" wikipedia can subject it to both
tinkering by third parties and sabotage.
[at least that's been my experience with wikipedia]

we should have a "private" wiki hosted just for this purpose.
anyone have a hosting package with wiki support?
[and the time to maintain it?]

I have found Norm Leete's web site has been a good source of
information about 'tron restoration, adjustment and maintenance. It
would be good if we could copy or reference his material and add to
it.

We could use the File area on this Group's home page.
What type of files can we / should we put there? PDF's ?

Hi, all-
Good idea, Frank. I think we can all offer some
input on this one. Could call one category "Things I
Learned the Hard Way". Then again, this could apply
to several subjects.

I will come up with more soon. Gotta go grocery
shopping now.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!!

Hi, all-
Just a personal opinion, but I don't care for
YouTube. True, a link will take you there, but if
you're not a member you can't navigate to other pages
(in my experience). And, I'd rather not join that

My turn. Huh? Bruce I'd been visiting Youtube for a number of years
before I joined (so I could leave commentary on a certain video), and to
the best of my knowledge, nothing changed. I still searched and
navigated the site freely as I had before. I'm thinking that you must
be referring to MySpace. I eventually joined that too, so I could
cyber-stalk an old girlfriend (and Frank Stickle too).
Happy Thanksgiving (off to watch The Mushroom People with my sons),

John (and everyone)-
My mistake, you are absolutely right, I was
thinking of MySpace. Sorry about that, hope no one
took offense. YouTube would be alright. Problem on
my end is this- all I have available at the moment is
a dial-up modem, and video-sized files take a while to
download. I'm not out in the country, I'm just cheap.
