Love that cartoon, though I'm never sure when it's on. "No air
drumming, son...". Hah!

Loved the "Egg Chair"(but with windows?). I remember the ones that had speakers planted in them. $500 to $700 each in the mid '70's. I believe Roger Dean even designed one. Phaaaaar Out!

Didn't Number 2 always sit in one of those when interrogating Number 6....?

Number 2 sat in an Earo Arnio Ball chair.
The Egg Chair was a different designer (maybe Italian)
The retreat pod chair ( half of which appears in Clockwork Orange before the rape scene) was created by Martyn Dean - Roger Dean's brother who did all the Yes stage architecture.
Roger and I discussed this a some length during a recent weekend course / exhibit I attended.
(His business card is also very interesting!)

Thanks Chris-
I had to retrieve my copy of Roger Dean's excellent art book "Views" and re-live a bit of the '70s. Page 130 shows Martyn's Retreat Pod, and Roger's pod-like Childrens Bed follows on page 134. Pages of house designs followed that. Mind-bending!
Then there were his amazing watercolor posters....

Hey, did he have any thoughts on the Mellotron?

A little bit. He knew of it's distinctive sound and it's importance in the music alongside other things. He was also really surprised at the efforts involved in fixing the Wakeman Tron. He doesn't remember anything about it's reliability on stage, but they did have to know the specific size of the keyboards and more importantly the space needed around them to build the stage set designs.
This was for the coloured pipe columns that emanated from Rick's side of the stage and the canopy over Alan White's drums.
They were the first designs were for the Topograhic Oceans tour. He said a lot more work went into it than most can appreciate.

Just seeing the words "Topographic Oceans" sends me into a state of profound, soul-destroying boredom. Topographic Oceans requires extraordinary patience / endurance that I will never have.

"Rear Window"

2010-04-26 by Tom Doncourt

Watching the delivery of Mattias’ Chamberlin,I figured I’d relate part of my experience with receiving the M1
Funny, I have these nosy neighbors— The back of their house looks out into my yard and workshop. I’m certain they already think I’m nuts. They saw a big wooden box ( the empty Chamberlin case) wheel off into the garage. Shortly after that they heard the table saw running.(I began building a stand) Maxine has been busy in the city and not out at the house in weeks. If this sounds like a scene from Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” well.... That’s what my neighbor thought too! Maxine received a call on her cell from them after never having spoken more than a few words since they moved in. “We’re so glad to hear your voice,we thought you might be dead!!”.Must have been a little disappointing for them. Well at least we know someone is watching out for us!!!

To each their own. I find "Topographic Oceans" delightfully intense.
Concentration rather than endurance or patience fits me.
You, Clay make it sound like a visit to the dentist.
Close to the Edge is the only Yes album that I like better.

Thanks Chris-
The Topographic stage setup was also noted in the book. Moving parts, very complex. I believe they devoted nearly all of the tour to playing "Topographic" at the time, which would've been tough on the audiences. I saw the following Relayer tour (with Moraz). It had a similar stage, but the only "Topographic" piece played was "Ritual".
I liked "Topographic" on record. Long, sweeping aural vistas, the stuff of headphones. The only thing that bugged me was the compressed nature of the mix.
Roger Dean and Yes are forever stuck with each other.

A visit to the dentist is a relative pleasure and I never have anesthetic. It's a good thing the hygienist is hot!

Just seeing the words "Topographic Oceans" sends me into a state of profound, soul-destroying boredom. Topographic Oceans requires extraordinary patience / endurance that I will never have.

Couldn't agree more Fritz, Tales has some tentsion but I like dark music anyway, but "Close to the Edge" is magic.
I think having seen "Tales" live might be why it worls better for me, or at least is more comfortable.

I have an industrial strength gas laser you can borrow for free if you aim it into their window!

What a heart-warming story. I recommend that you surprise them by burning their house down.

Yeah, I agree.
Topographic Oceans is a demanding listen. I could never really get into it 100% until recently. Now I appreciate it so much more.
I had to listen to each piece of music at different times though. If I do that then I always enjoy it, but the whole thing all at once sometimes is a bit much, and the subtleties can easily get lost.
It really depends on what mood you're in I think.

Just seeing the words "Topographic Oceans" sends me into a state of profound, soul-destroying boredom. Topographic Oceans requires extraordinary patience / endurance that I will never have.

I always had issues with the drumsolo on a kitchen table part.

Close to the edge always felt so great because it was musically efficient, logical and to the point...and then they gave us topographic oceans.

As a drummer I have always had problems with Alan White in comparison to Bill Bruford.

Is there a Fragile re-master that actually sounds good? I've always thought the vinyl was some of the best sounding rock production out there, but every digital version I've heard sounded flat and distorted.

It was very hard to replace Bruford. He is an amazing artist. I especially love his work with King Crimson.

Topographic oceans- Great guitar work, vocal harmony, bass playing. Adequate drumming. Wakeman= not whole heartedly into it,goes from noodley to genius(esp.some great mellotron work) Whole thing doesn’t quite hang together. Like most of prog from that point Yes went over the deep end. But.....I really love it. Fragile and Close to the Edge are a tough act to follow-maybe they should have stuck to the short prog form (25 minutes or less).

Hey Fritz-
You might check out the DVD-Audio 2002 release (if you can find it, and a player). It has both a 96KHz/24bit and 192KHz/24bit recording of the original stereo mix. Very clear to my ears, and a nice bottom.
The surround mix has some oddities. The credits list the surround mix as a "remix". Maybe it came from an old Quadrophonic mix (like the Moodies' SACDs surround sources).

I don't have Drama on CD but the newest Tormato CD release is a better mix than the original.

It's one of the only records to have Birotron on it, but it's only used as background filler sound.

The record doesn't hold together that well. It seems there's a lack of creative ideas. On The Silent Wings Of Freedom is probably the best track on that album.

The last track on side one, "Release, Release" is good for constipation along with increased intake of water, and fiber.
