Loved the "Egg Chair"(but with windows?). I remember the ones that had speakers planted in them. $500 to $700 each in the mid '70's. I believe Roger Dean even designed one. Thanks Chris- I had to retrieve my copy of Roger Dean's excellent art book "Views" and re-live a bit of the '70s. Page 130 shows Martyn's Retreat Pod, and Roger's pod-like Childrens Bed follows on page 134. Pages of house designs followed that. Mind-bending! Then there were his amazing watercolor posters.... Hey, did he have any thoughts on the Mellotron? -Bruce D. --- On Fri, 4/23/10, Chris Dale <unobtainiumkeys@gmail.com> wrote:

Funny, I have these nosy neighbors— The back of their house looks out into my yard and workshop. I’m certain they already think I’m nuts. They saw a big wooden box ( the empty Chamberlin case) wheel off into the garage. Shortly after that they heard the table saw running.(I began building a stand) Maxine has been busy in the city and not out at the house in weeks. If this sounds like a scene from Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” well.... That’s what my neighbor thought too! Maxine received a call on her cell from them after never having spoken more than a few words since they moved in. “We’re so glad to hear your voice,we thought you might be dead!!”.Must have been a little disappointing for them. Well at least we know someone is watching out for us!!!
Watching the delivery of Mattias’ Chamberlin,I figured I’d relate part of my experience with receiving the M1

Thanks Chris- The Topographic stage setup was also noted in the book. Moving parts, very complex. I believe they devoted nearly all of the tour to playing "Topographic" at the time, which would've been tough on the audiences. I saw the following Relayer tour (with Moraz). It had a similar stage, but the only "Topographic" piece played was "Ritual". I liked "Topographic" on record. Long, sweeping aural vistas, the stuff of headphones. The only thing that bugged me was the compressed nature of the mix. Roger Dean and Yes are forever stuck with each other. -Bruce D. --- On Mon, 4/26/10, ClayE <ecclesreinson@rogers.com> wrote: From: ClayE <ecclesreinson@rogers.com> Subject: [newmellotrongroup] Re: The Key to Science is Prog Rock (The Venture Bros) To: newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com Date: Monday, April 26, 2010, 8:02 AM Just seeing the words "Topographic Oceans" sends me into a state of profound, soul-destroying boredom. Tony and I disagree on a lot, but I am also in the minority here. I like Tales too. If you listen through the drugs, there is some angst in there.

To each their own. I find "Topographic Oceans" delightfully intense.
Concentration rather than endurance or patience fits me.
You, Clay make it sound like a visit to the dentist.
Close to the Edge is the only Yes album that I like better.

No no... It has to be a surprise or it wouldn't be funny. In a message dated 4/26/2010 11:20:30 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, tomdcour@amnh.org writes:
“ABNER!!! Mr. Doncourt is headed this way with a torch!!!!”
What a heart-warming story. I recommend that you surprise them by burning their house down.
In a message dated 4/26/2010 10:42:22 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, tomdcour@amnh.org writes:

Thanks Chris-The Topographic stage setup was also noted in the book. Moving parts, very complex. I believe they devoted nearly all of the tour to playing "Topographic" at the time, which would've been tough on the audiences. I saw the following Relayer tour (with Moraz). It had a similar stage, but the only "Topographic" piece played was "Ritual".I liked "Topographic" on record. Long, sweeping aural vistas, the stuff of headphones. The only thing that bugged me was the compressed nature of the mix.Roger Dean and Yes are forever stuck with each other.-Bruce D.

Just seeing the words "Topographic Oceans" sends me into a state of profound, soul-destroying boredom. Topographic Oceans requires extraordinary patience / endurance that I will never have.

Yeah, I agree.
Topographic Oceans is a demanding listen. I could never really get into it 100% until recently. Now I appreciate it so much more.
I had to listen to each piece of music at different times though. If I do that then I always enjoy it, but the whole thing all at once sometimes is a bit much, and the subtleties can easily get lost.
It really depends on what mood you're in I think.

Thanks Chris-
The Topographic stage setup was also noted in the book.

Just seeing the words "Topographic Oceans" sends me into a state of profound, soul-destroying boredom. Topographic Oceans requires extraordinary patience / endurance that I will never have.

I guess Tormato and Drama can be grouped together, but I see 90125 as a completely different animal.

Is there a Fragile re-master that actually sounds good? I've always thought the vinyl was some of the best sounding rock production out there, but every digital version I've heard sounded flat and distorted. fritz

Topographic oceans- Great guitar work, vocal harmony, bass playing. Adequate drumming. Wakeman= not whole heartedly into it,goes from noodley to genius(esp.some great mellotron work) Whole thing doesn’t quite hang together. Like most of prog from that point Yes went over the deep end. But.....I really love it. Fragile and Close to the Edge are a tough act to follow-maybe they should have stuck to the short prog form (25 minutes or less).
;
It was very hard to replace Bruford. He is an amazing artist. I especially love his work with King Crimson.

Agreed. Alan White is a very competent drummer, but he's just a drummer. There's always something special that Bruford brings to the table, no matter where he's playing.

Hey Fritz- You might check out the DVD-Audio 2002 release (if you can find it, and a player). It has both a 96KHz/24bit and 192KHz/24bit recording of the original stereo mix. Very clear to my ears, and a nice bottom. The surround mix has some oddities. The credits list the surround mix as a "remix". Maybe it came from an old Quadrophonic mix (like the Moodies' SACDs surround sources). -Bruce D. --- On Tue, 4/27/10, fdoddy@aol.com <fdoddy@aol.com> wrote: From: fdoddy@aol.com <fdoddy@aol.com> Subject: Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: The Key to Science is Prog Rock (The Venture Bros) To: newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com Date: Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 5:23 AM Is there a Fragile re-master that actually sounds good?
