Sugarplum Fairies

2010-04-16 by doctorwho8@aol.com

I was catching up on my Soap (yes, I follow one) One Life to Live, and at
the end of the April 7th episode they played the song "Hold Onto Me" by
Sugarplum Fairies. It's drenched in what sounds like M300 Violins done in a
"Watching and Waiting" style.
Go to the music player and click on the song to hear.

Sounds good Bill. A bit like Margo Timmins.
SF's keyboardist Jebin Bruni has been known to play Chamberlin with Fiona Apple and Robbie Williams.

Sounds like Jonsi (of Sigur Ros) when he plays his bowed guitar, to me.

Does Fiona Apple sing out of tune or is it me? Never quite got her "thing", whatever it is.

fritz...still kinda surprised Mike likes the Beach Boys, or Brian Wilson, as much as he does. That band has always been my torch to carry.

No Fritz, It's not you. I checked. You sing just fine.

She's atrocious. Listen to her 'duet' with Johnny Cash on 'Bridge Over
Troubled Water' (which has sampled Mellotron backing, weirdly enough) to
hear just how excruciating she is. She's all over the map and back
again. I was pointed in the direction of 'When The Pawn Does The Doo-Dah
And Disappears Up Its Own Fundament, But Now They're Content To Wear
Stars On Their Brows' and got as far as track three before I had to
conclude that she has to be /stunning /to look at because she can
neither compose nor sing were her life to be depending on either talent.

Mainly Brian, but not just Brian. I played 'Pacific Ocean Blue' last
night for the first time in ages and was just blown away by it. It's not
even bad lyrically which is pretty incredible given that they couldn't
write lyrics to save their lives normally. (The exception is of course
the title track with lyrics penned by Mike 'Eco-Guru' Love. I just love
hearing about '/the slaughter of the otter/') The band's repertoire does
of course contain some absolute howling clunkers but the /shining
moments /more than compensate; for every '/Hey Little Tomboy/' there is
a '/Til I Die/'. I've just heard 'Love You' for the first time ever this
week. Wow. Even /concussed/, Brian Wilson was doing better than most.

Does that mean you are "carrying a torch" for them? - (You still love them and they don't love you back) or maybe it's more of a struggle / burden to walk around with that heavy flaming stick? (your cross to bear)

OR maybe the Beach Boys have been a source of enlightenment, illumination, inspiration for you?

Obviously I can't speak for Mr Hoffman, but 'Pet Sounds' is one of the four albums that probably changed my view of what was possible with music.

I thought Blechta would've made that comment.

Actually, I made that comment for Rick, because he was out shopping. My
comment would have been. "No, I checked all of her albums and videos and
there's no evidence of you singing on any of them."
