Our Prayer

Our Prayer

2010-04-12 by Mike Dickson

For those of you who know where this madrigal is from and what it is,
I'm sorry.

Shaky playing all over and some ropey starts to some notes etc.
Nevertheless, interesting to hear what may have been had you-know-who
had access to a Birotron. :-)

Enjoy.

Hell, he sure wasn't the best Mellotron player I ever saw, but he and his
brothers (and cousin and friend) sure could sing.

Thanks Mike! Nice rendition. What was the inspiration for this undertaking?

I guess I need to make a new video now.

Nice rendition and it's interesting because the Beach Boys ordered a Birotron.

I can see it now. A whole album of Beach Boys done on the Mellotron, Birotron and Chamberain.

Actually, I made a start on 'Cabinessence' about two years ago and then gave it up.

Not really sure. I was playing the 6 hours+ I have of 1966/67 'SMiLE'
tapes recently and was struck by how blisteringly original so much of it
was, and just how in control of the proceedings BW actually was at the
time. I'm assured by those 'in the know' (it's a long story about how I
know them) that he only /really /went off the rails in the early 1970s
but that until that point he merely lacked focus, having had so many
musically interesting doors shut in his face. (A lot of the bad
treatment meted out to him was, it appears, either meant for the best or
his own fault)

The first time I heard OP I was immediately taken by how much it sounded
like something Byrd could have written 300 years before. Some people
speak of a continuum with Gershwin, Ives, Carmichael, Porter, Webb,
Bacharach leading up to BW. I'm not sure that's very far off the mark.

Mike,
Nice job.I don't know why but I was actually surprised at how many knew
the tune.

I didn't have a chance to hear it until this morning. Nice moving parts underneath.

Why don't you polish it up? It's a fine arrangement.

Mike apparently has a lot of moving parts underneath. We're just not quite sure what they are.

Geez what a coincidence you said this.
It9;s not Beach Boys but I recorded a demo last year with pitchy falsetto vocals and only:
Optigan
Orchestron
Mellotron
Chamberlin
Birotron
It's done with all original instruments (no samples) on a portastudio cassette recorder.
It's a very rough draft, nowhere near as good as I'd like - part of a larger unfinished work.
But I'm told it's (rather sadly) the only time all of them have appeared alongside each other in a single recording.
So I've reluctantly posted it to MySpace.

Chris,

I notice on your myspace site that you have a Digeridoo. Perhaps you could
record a set of tapes for the Mellotron. That would be something, ehh?
Dooooooooo. Doooooooo. Doooooooo. Doooooooo.

Thanks. I suppose I am too, but that may be mostly because enjoyment of that entire canon was such a hidden pleasure for so many. There is a even type of fan out there who bemoans the official release as it has made their 'inside knowledge' into something more public. A pretty daft attitude, I may say.

Incidentally:

This is print slick from the 1967 run that was going to be the album...but never was. It's signed by Frank Holmes, the artist and was given to me a few years ago in payment for a favour or two I did for people connected to the band. I've been offered substantial sums for it, but it's going nowhere. Incidentally, Frank Holmes only got to see the live version of 'Smile' because he was working as an usher at the theatre where they were playing.

Thank Rick, but it's not an arrangement at all - I just followed the parts on the notation and played it fairly flat. I chose the Birotron voice because it vaguely matches the real thing, but the sound quality of the tapes is pretty awful and any polishing would only make matters worse. If I ever get to finish Cabinessence then I will do a far better job.
