A good listen with headphones.
The sound quality on YouTube seems to have improved. If anything is going to have that MP3 gurgly sound, grand piano will.

Hi all-I had to read the info on the Nord site, just to make sure I didn't miss something. It says that the downloadable samples were taken directly from digital masters made from the master tape library. No mention is made of transfering them to a Chamberlin (or Mellotron) before sampling, as they did for the 'Tron samples. Of course they would sound clearer! But something is definitely lost in the process if this is true. They also looped them!-Bruce D.

Looping? I saw that. I wonder why they would do that. I'm sure that the Nord Wave will let you do all the looping you want. Why force the issue? In a message dated 4/5/2010 4:13:25 P.M. Yeah,in that way it is very limited and it is easy to run out of space even though each patch is quite small in its compressed form (I don’t understand how they are compressed). I hope that Markus’ new “digitron” has solved that problem. Considering that you can get a memory stick with quite a few gigs of memory for very cheap I don’t know why Clavia has such limitations. The NordWave isn’t really supposed to be a “sample player” as such but a virtual synth that uses sampled sound as its base, but it would be great if I could upgrade the flash rom.
Very good question. The NordWave has Flash Memory 180Mb for user samples. Isn't that extremely LOW capacity by today's standards?!
You would fill that up quick. It looks like each unlooped Mellotron or Chamberlin "voice" is about 10 MB... So I guess you would get about 18 voices loaded at one time.

Interesting. Some very nice things here. The man certainly has chops.
Interesting, yes. My major gripe with RW though is that he has only one chop. It's all so bleeding monotonous.

He is very adept at arpeggios and scale passages, but in listening to some of his other works, they rely on the same things to a great extent. It's too bad he doesn't have someone who has his respect who could challenge him to dig a little deeper, because it's obvious that he is really musical. Makes me wish I'd spent more time with scales and arpeggios!

Once get them solidly under your fingers your good to go as long as you keep playing. Even if you stop for awhile, it's only a few weeks to get the strength and agility back. However, there's A LOT of slug time at the beginning.
In Wakeman's case, you also have to know how to put it all together, which he obviously does.

The scales, arpeggios and the endless trilling bother me a lot. I also reckon you could take any one fifteen second snapshot of that particular piece and it would be instantly recognisable as Wakeman. There is no space, no let-up, no room for breathing in it at all. I'm sure prog-heads the world over think that's great as the more notes it has then the better it must be but to me it's like listening to a squalling kid who won't shut up so he gets the attention he demands. It's all so needy.

I've never seen a type B USB flash drive, so you probably need a PC and a USB printer cable to load samples. :-(

If you need a great synthesizer , a sample player and the ability to combine both fairly fluidly then the Nordwave is good. The perfect sample player it is not. For some inexplicable reason the thing just has a (nearly) complete library of mellotron and chamberlin samples. It is also lightweight very well built and small. I am sure Markus’ thing will be a much better dedicated unit for digital mellotron reproduction.
