volume pedal?

volume pedal?

2010-03-29 by john barrick

So, as I get closer to getting my volume jack back into the circuit on
1407, I find myself wanting to ask for recommendations on volume pedals.
Oooh - I think I just asked.

Yamaha makes a perfectly usable unit, FY7 and I have no problem with on my M400.
Plugs right in, simple, works for me!

Ernie Ball volume pedals are well made. WW-BJH uses one with his M400.

EB pedals are the top of the class. EB, DeArmond, and Visual Sound (needs power) are the only serious volume pedals I have ever really seen.since the 70's. There are other OK ones but they are all have real issues: injection molded, too light, wide tolerances, pivot on the floor, need batteries, ac. Even the great reverse engineers at Behringer hosed this up. I believe that you need to be able to change, clean or service the pot and nominally adjust the throw (gearing) .

Just about any expression pedal will work and plugs right into the jack on the lower right front. I use one of those cheapie plastic Moogerfooger jobbies.

Hey John-
I also have the Yamaha FY-7. Very reasonable in price. 2 yrs ago it was in stock at Guitar Center. Passive design, ok by me. It has a nice spring-loaded expression feature, which is adjustable. Feels rugged. Any excess cord can be coiled up and stored inside the housing. The potentiometer got scratchy within a few months, so I cleaned it, and it has worked fine ever since.

Is there any rewiring needed to use the Ernie Ball pedal in the volume pedal jack? I have one that I use with my guitars, but I'm using an FC7 with #500. I like the feel of the Ernie Ball better, but I thought it could only be used with the output jack.

I agree with Clay. I think Ball pedals are very good. I use for both
guitar and Tron. Replacing the cable when it break is a little bit of a
pain, but an excellent You tube video is available when the time comes.

I use the Ernie Ball 25K ohm pedal with the MK-VI output jack. I just tested it with the volume pedal jack. It worked well with a 1/4" TRS plug (stereo) cable connected to the pedal output. It DID NOT work with a TS plug (mono) cable.

I would guess that the M400 volume pedal jack needs a tip / ring / sleeve plug too. The Yamaha FC7 has a TRS plug doesn't it?

I don't notice any difference in the sound quality whether the pedal is used on the output or with the pedal jack.

Yes the Yamaha has a RTS plug slightly larger in diameter than the one sold to me by DMI ages ago.
It's been trouble free from day one.

I experienced a loss of signal when using the pedal jack, much the same as
when I had an ARP String Ensemble. Has anyone else experienced this?
Since having the ARP, I always use the output jack with my trusty Ernie Ball
6166 -- nice long throw for swells.

Check your impotence if your swells are weak. Usually measured in ohms. :-)

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: volume pedal?

2010-03-29 by Bruce Daily

Hey Frank-

I thought at first that my Yamaha pedal caused a little loss too. In my case it was due to the spring-positioned "swell" feature, which positions the upper end of the control to be a little less than full when normally depressed (the spring position is adjustable). If you mash it to the "full swell" you get full volume output. I tested this last night, and found no difference between the "full swell" output and the "pedal unplugged" output.
Passive pedals could have some attenuation, though. If the pedal's control potentiometer is 25K ohms or more, it probably shoudn't have an effect on the 'Tron's volume. Any less, and some reduction in volume may result. I guess you could consider it a built-in "Mellotron Attenuator" (remember that dandy little accessory?).

Since the line out runs through the swell socket to the line out socket,
you must have had a contact issue. in the swell pedal socket. Any loss in
volume with a swell pedal plugged in would be a function of a faulty
potentiometer in the pedal itself.
