Thanks Rick,
Most likely
A) Cello
B) Mark II 3 violins
C) Combined brass
I had forgotten about the russian choir, maybe instead of the cello. Generally think in terms of using the tron more as backing than lead these days.

If you don't have cello already, I would get that on Track A or C. With 3 violins next door, you can make use of track blending for one of the really classic and useful blends. MkII Combined Brass is also a good one for your third choice, again blending well with 3 violins. But I could also suggest the Cor Anglais/Oboe split. It really is a lovely voice in itself and quite nice blended with the strings. If you like really BIG moments, might I suggest Orchestra or Gothic or the Russian Choir? Outside of those Russkies, there really isn't much blending that can be done with the 3-violins.On Mar 2, 2010, at 6:40 PM, Mark Pring wrote:Cello or clarinet?

I've played around with the Mellotron Archives samples of the viola sound and I have to agree - it sounds harsh to me. I'm considering the new one - Cyndee Lee Rule. But what I really want is a solo violin other than the M400 one. "Never Comes the Day" has the most obvious use of this sound that I can think of.

if you can stomach their constant whining. ;) Isn't it amazing how much they do whine?!? It's a universal thing. What about how psycho sopranos are? Cellists are spacy, bassoonists are torked up geeks, most, but not all trumpet players just need to be slapped, guitarists need to shut up and piccolo players (not flute players who play piccolo) are plain old scary.... We bass players are just chill. fritz

Actually, Bernie, that's my mellotron you're listening to, I believe. It was used for several of the libraries recordings when it was back in England for a spot of fixing up in 2001.
There are two notes (C2 being one of them ) that are rather painfully out of tune, to the point where I don't use them. Also, if you think this viola sounds good overall, than I'd suggest listening to more violists -- if you can stomach their constant whining. ;)
It's a lovely-sounding instrument in the right hands and if it's recorded properly.
Believe me, we can do better than this.

Hi Tom- I'm very sure Pinder used the M300A 2 Violins on "Never Comes the Day". I have it on one of my frames, which it matches. Sounds like he doubled it by recording on in the left ch, and also on the right. An alternate choice might be the "Classic Strings". You get the 2 M300A violins with the 3 MK2 violins, a total of 5 violins!! The exchange rate dropped briefly below $1.50 this morning. I say it can happen again. -Bruce D. - On Tue, 3/2/10, Thomas C. Thanks Bruce! I'm going to have to try the M300A , which I do already have!?! It's possible that I didn't recognize it because of Pinder's handling of it. I have some confusion over the M300 strings-from what i could make out there appears to be an A version which is 2 violins, a B version which is solo and a String section which is split in three parts-violin , viola and cello. Mellotron archives and Streetly seem to be at odds with how these are labeled. I played a solo violin on the 300 up at the Mellotron Ranch and really loved it, it's on my Nordwave as solo violin M300 and it sounds like the M300b that is on the Streetly tape library.

Tom-
A late response. Just curious, did your Nord Wave come with all the 'Tron sounds, or were they on a disc or download?
Yeah, my references are to the Streetly library.
Mr. Kean's Mellotron listing is confusing, and so are the library sounds. I wonder where he got his sound descriptions from? Were they written on the master tape boxes, and/or passed down from Les Bradley? His "String Section" and String Section 2" seem like Streetly's "String Section" & "String Section w/o Cello" respectively. Kean's "M300A" and "M300B Strings" both seem to have 2 violins each, but are diferent recordings. Kean's "M300A Strings" may be 2 violas (contrary to the library description of 3 violins, violas & 'cello). The weird thing is that the Kean's "M300B Strings" compares closest to Streetly's "M300A 2 violins"!! Kean doesn't have a "M300B Solo Violin" like Streetly, but his "Solo Violin" sounds the same.
Then there's Kean's "Solo Viola" recording, which sounds like a 'cello on the lowest sample note! Let's mix it up!
But, I have respect for both companies for keeping up the sounds, history and tradition.

Hi Bruce , thanks for your input into this confusing issue. My Nord wave was bought used but had all the sounds on it so I don't know if they came on a disc. They are easily downloaded from the nord site though! I'm comparing the Mellotron (Markus/Kean) library with Streely's.... First off there are three distinct M300 "string" sets that I have found. One is the 2 violin that Wooly made famous. Then there is a string section consisting of celloes, violas and violins. Last there is a solo violin (I heard this one for myself at the Mellotron Ranch). On the "Pinder Presents" disc of samples the M300 strings are the cello/viola/ strings. Mellotron's library has this as their M300A sound. If you buy a set for your M400 you get that violin/viola section with a few cellos at the lower register. Their M300B is the two violin sound. Streetly has the M300A as the two violin sound. The Streetly M300B sounds to me like the solo violin and I double checked this with the M300 solo violin on the Nord and my recordings of Jerry's M300. Phew, that's as much as I can figure out.TD

Hi Tom- Phew! This is a bad as 'Tron Trivia gets! The M300 strings issue is a bit clearer. But now my head hurts. Thanks, think I'll take a nap. Here's to hoping for a Mellotron convention in the near future. -Bruce D. --- On Mon, 3/8/10, Thomas C. Doncourt <tomdcour@amnh.org> wrote: From: Thomas C. My Nord wave was bought used but had all the sounds on it so I don't know if they came on a disc. They are easily downloaded from the nord site though! I'm comparing the Mellotron (Markus/Kean) library with Streely's... .
