Here's an interesting statement from Fripp: "Poseidon is half of a stunning album. The Birdman Suite from MacDonald & Giles would have provided the other half." Wilson and Fripp working on Poseidon and Islands See January 6th , 7th and 8th. http://www.dgmlive.com/diaries.htm?entry=16504

I've tried a couple times to get thru Birdman. I always poop out and fall asleep. It's been sitting next to the turntable for about a month now waiting for another chance.

Sorry, but I think 'Devils Triangle' makes the album. I'm not a fan of Haskell's voice, but the other two songs on side one are really good. What absolutely tips it is actually Cat Food which is such a break from the norm that I like it! (Plus it has Tippet all over it, which is always a good thing) kinchmusic@aol.com wrote:

I guess that "stunning half" doesn't necessarily mean stunning side. The way I read your message Mike, you aren't fond of Cadence and Cascade or the three Peace songs (Haskell), you like the rest and you love Devil's Triangle. Interesting response. I have to say that for me, Court, Epitaph and particularly ITWOP were all 3 seminal tracks that stopped me in my tracks as a teenager and changed forever the way I wanted both to listen and play music. Until I heard these, the Mellotron was an interesting flavour filling out the back of the soundscape. And I didn't really know what one was, but these songs made me want to find out! But to this day, I have never heard such a triumphant, in your face tron entrance as on Poseidon. It's huge and full of atmosphere. Yes, my musical journey was never the same again after that. I'm rather sorry you don't get it Mike. I have to admit I'm surprised by that. I'ts a bit like telling your favourite joke and the finding the person you're telling it to isn't laughing! Just goes to show that one mans meat is another man's Poseidon! Andy K

I had a seminal tract infection one time that stopped me in my tracks. lol, lmao, rotfl! I love the huge tron entrance on Poseidon. Another great track is Sailor's Tale (Islands). The tron (MK-II ?) is mixed way off in the background, but somehow still dominates. --- In newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com, kinchmusic@... wrote:

Clay, you're killing me! :>) After I visit Frank, I'm coming up north.
In all seriousness, the one song that I find "perfect" in its unerring detail is The Ink Spots' "I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire". I could listen to that song endlessly. Second place would be Sheherezade, which is near perfect. Tron song? Close to the Edge...sorry.

There is not much about Islands that I don't like. I'm never sure why people are so down on it. The title track is magnificent. (Despite Peter 'Owls know my eyes' Sinfield's attempts to blow it to bits)

I expect it isn't a popular opinion here, but I always thought that Greg Lake had one of the better voices in this genre. At least until he tried subbing for John Wetton in Asia. Bob S. kinchmusic@aol.com wrote:

I actually like "Sea Goat." I even like the whole Still album. Is it good? No. Is it terrible? Yes. Do I like it? Absolutely. It's just such a bizarre album. How can you not be fascinated by it? Supposedly, it's being re-released with a bunch of bonus tracks. I'll probably pass and just enjoy the album as it was meant to be. That is, with a pained expression on my face. Then, I'll repeat the process. It must be some form of self-loathing that I put myself thru it.

Like the David Lynch film Eraserhead. Terrible but facinating. Unorthodoxy is cool but often crosses the line into total crap territory. Some people are good at riding that line. Captain Beefheart and Pare Ubu's David Thomas for example. --- In newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com, tspit74@... wrote:
