I wouldn't be so quick to discount this. I'm betting that it was developed
with the Clavia folks. If so, it will be of the highest quality. I also
imagine that it will have all of the sounds onboard but with the ability to
add to the library. I'm sure Markus has had a chance to uncover every
weakness of the Memotron and overcome them.

If I were Manikin, I would be very nervous.

The big difference will be the quality of the samples. It will probably be shipped with the same mellotron voice library as the Nord Wave and it will have all the best Chamberlin voices. (Sweet!)

Hopefully, voice blending capability will be better than the Memotron.

Clay
P.S. Did I mention the 'instant bone' control panel?

Re: It's all gone digital...........

Maybe this is their answer to the M4000, since the MkIIx never panned out. I think it will probably sound better than the Memotron since the Memotron is really an M-Tron in a cabinet and maybe it even has the ability to blend any sounds. Still not a Mellotron to me.

I've uploaded the Nord Wave sample library pdf to the files section. According to the document, Clavia sampled a MkVI.

Forgive the dumb question, but I went to the Mellotron.com site and
looked at this. Is the brand, trade, SM, font, etc. "Mellotron" and
"Chamberlin" in the public domain? Can anyone put these words on their
product?

Product looks great and if Nord and Markus are involved, it's probably
top shelf, but what do the folks at Streetly think?

"These tapes were then used to create original soundbanks for a brand new Mellotron, manufactured with original tape heads, capstans,
electronics etc. And from this brand new, exquisite instrument, the sounds were recorded using state of the art technology."

I would think that if you want the sound of a Mellotron, you need to have the sound processed by a Mellotron, otherwise, wouldn't it sound too much like the actual recordings of the instruments?

Wise words Bernie. All mellotron production tapes were from 3rd or 4th
generation work masters and NOT master tapes. The degredation is what gives
them that sound. If you recordings straight from the masters, you would
feel cheated of the character you expected.

"Mellotron" is trademarked by Dave Kean... so I know that you can't use that name unless you have permission.

We wish him every success - truly. It's another market. We make
gargantuan, heaving monsters that cycle tape and Markus has to compete with many
other digital emulations. It's getting crowded out there; he has the name
and should take a good chunk of the market BUT digital means cheaper and that
means volume. As previously mentioned, Manikin should be worried as this
is direct competition and probably far superior. It all depends on whether
it is a sample replay device or an emulation of all that a mellotron does.

The Mellotron Archives cdrom was produced from fresh tapes played through
actual melotrons and an M1 Chamberlin I'm pretty sure. I would guess they
would do the same thing with this new instrument.

Does that mean that if I make new tapes from my existing tapes they would
have even more character? Or is the character quotient already maximized at
this time?

I guess what Markus was telling me is that Clavia was getting all the
sounds. I never bothered to consider it further. This was many months before it
was ever announced publicly. Obviously they would have to be sampled from a
real Mellotron. I would think that Mark II sounds sampled from a Mark IV
would be somewhat different then if sampled from a Mark II.

"Mellotron" is trademarked by Dave Kean... so I know that you can't use that name unless you have permission.

It would appear no-one ever told me. :-)

From what I understand David Kean purchased the Mellotron trademark. Just like Lenovo (a Chinese company) purchased the IBM trademark to stick on computers made by Lenovo, the computers have nothing to do with IBM. This is a side effect how business is evolving in the US.

I was offered the Danelectro trademark at a shuttered music store in Vineland NJ. I bought a lot of guitar parts that day but left behind the rest. It didn9;t seem proper. I only would have bought it to present to original people's family. That behavior would have you expelled from the Wharton School.
