My First Recording Experience - 1965

My First Recording Experience - 1965

2009-12-28 by Tron400

A few weeks ago, I was searching around on eBay and the rest of the Web to see if I could find a copy of the 45 that I recorded with my first band, second incarnation. I had lost my sole copy many, many years ago and was shocked to find two, apparently unplayed, DJ copies. I bought them both and a Stanton USB turntable, and converted them to MP3. The band was called The Last Five and the single was recorded while I was still in high school, in late 1965 on the Wand label at the Scepter-Wand studio in New York, under the direction of Florence Greenberg. Both songs were written and sung by Basil (Bill) Matychak, who went on to form Buffalongo. Members of Buffalongo, minus Bill, eventually formed Orleans and King Harvest, who covered a Buffalongo song, Dancin' In The Moonlight. Here be teh tunes:

Thanks Pete. It did make the local charts at around #35 or #40. I wanted to be on the Wand label because The Kingsmen were my favorite band at the time. Dionne Warwick grew up about 8 miles from my house. We also recorded about 10 more songs during the next couple of months, but none were released. The last time we were in the studio, the Velvet Underground was recording there on our time. They were recording European Son for their banana album. Andy Warhol was in the control room, sitting next to my Dad. That was pretty weird!

What a great story Bernie!

I have half heartedly tried to find the only mix of my first home made multi-track recording. I recorded piano, bass and drums for an original tune on a reel to reel that I hot wired to let me do sound on sound. I was 16 at the time. It was shitty quality, but when I played it for my dad, he freaked out as he watched me put this thing together not really knowing what it was going to be. What a feeling to hear something one has written AND realized...I've been hooked ever since.

The mix is on an unmarked cassette...ugh. I've got hundreds and hundreds of cassettes of project mixes and original material...one day I'll hunker down.

I just digitized a 10 song instrumental project of mine from the 80's and started to master it. I'll let it out when it sounds decent.

Fritz, I've been waiting patiently for your next album (I almost said "CD"). I'll bet you have enough material in the can to inspire several albums.

When you release this material can we see a photo of you from the 80's?
Did you look like any of the guys from "Flock of Seagulls?"

No, he was too busy running around like a madman yelling "you're gonna be stars" to the Velvet Underground. BTW, Nico wasn't at that session. I did get to talk to one of the guitarists about their equipment though. He had a Vox Super Beatle and the bass player had the same Vox that McCartney. They got them free from Vox and had to have the speakers replaced every week. The other guitarist used a Silvertone amp with 2-12" speakers.
