Genesis Box Set, The Live Albums

Genesis Box Set, The Live Albums

2009-10-26 by John

Hi All,

I know we just had a thread on the King Crimson re-release. I didn't purchase yet, but did pick up the Genesis Live Album box set today. Not sure if we covered here on the board or not, but I both like and dislike portions.

First of all, a bit of caveat emptor, my hearing is getting pretty crappy so I tend to emphasize the bass when I set the EQ on the Hi Fi. The first CD I played was Seconds Out "Firth of Fifth" and I fast forwarded to the Steve Hackett guitar solo; I'm an impatient bastard! It's hands down my favorite Genesis moment, especially when the bass pedals come in. But to me, it sounded really compressed. The differences between the loud and soft parts were very diminished. The overall mix on the Seconds Out re-issue was an emphasis on vocals and the instruments, particularly keyboards, were markedly diminished. When I listen to music, I tend to ignore vocals and concentrate on the instuments. Anyone else do that?

The treat for me were the extra tracks on the Rainbow Theater concert from 1973. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight and particularly Cinema Show had some guitar surprises, but again the 8 voice choir was mixed way down.

Love to know what you all think.

Regards,

John

Yep,
In all the recent Genesis remixes. TB has chosen to keep the tron volume to a bare minimum! The worst example of this is "Entangled" on "Trick". Instead of re-creating that wonderfull moment on the outro from the original mix. The ending just doesn't get off the ground.
What is it with these guys?

Which box set? There's the Rhino Records version and then there's the EMD International version. Are they the same mixes? I have the EMD version, but I haven't had a chance to sit down and listen closely yet.

I definitely saw the Rhino Records logo on the CDs and DVDs, so must be
that version vs. EMD.

Well you can be sure I won\u2019t be buying any of that crap. Genesis once again provides a big disappointment.
