Mellotron madness in US commercials

Mellotron madness in US commercials

2009-10-15 by doctorwho8@aol.com

So far I've seen/heard three commericals using Mellotron in the past month or so. Two of them use Flute (which is popular for commercials and catchy jingles lately). The new Cisco commercial uses 3 violins. Undisputed. Fritz, is this your doing? ;)

I am hearing more and more Mellotron being used in commercial and pop music. Also heard it in the background score of a TV show the other night.

Hence my poster in the photos section!

Erm. I first heard it in the Marriot-Courtyard commericals, MkII violins. Wal-Mart, Quaker Oatmeal, HSBC bank, and a few others that I can't recall have MkII flute. The HSBC one was hard to tell as the mix of other things was dense enough that you just couldn't tell if that was a 'tron or just tinny real flute. The ending note was the D above the staff and that resolved ALL POSSIBLE DOUBT. (AH! TRIO!)

Curse the corporate marketing machine! It used to be cool and awesome to talk to people about Mellotrons! Now it's, oh, oh, oh, didja see the Quaker Oatmeal Commercial? Yeah man!
