Update from Systems Theory regarding Greg Amov's health

Update from Systems Theory regarding Greg Amov's health

2009-10-10 by sdavmor

[I posted this on progressiveears very early Friday morning.]

I've just come from spending 2 hours with Greg at his house. I was
able to get a good sense of where he is physically and also how the
cancer is effecting his thinking. An old friend's daughter has come
from Phoenix to help Diane Amov with Greg's nursing for the next
month. She was the flower girl at Greg and Diane's wedding 21 years
ago. Which was the last time I saw her. Her husband is on deployment
in Iraq right now so she volunteered to do this until he returns in 4
weeks. Which may be (unspoken but ever-present) all that will be
needed for this to play out.

As for Greg going to Calprog with me pushing his wheelchair, it
officially won't be happening. Greg and I talked about it tonight, but
when I asked him if he felt up to it, he said no. Which almost
certainly means no to going next weekend to see Djam Karet & Steve
Roach, though I will plan for it until he tells me otherwise. But he's
not going to get any stronger from here on out, so these two events
were the best shot for a last hurrah concert. [Sat addon: I have since
come down with the flu, and feel like a truck sideswiped me, so my
plan to get a last minute CalProg ticket from someone that can't
attend is officially scrapped in favour of all-day sleep].

Greg talked about doing some work on tunes for Systems Theory next
week, but how much energy he might have to put into even one tune is
questionable. Especially since he will be getting 10 daily radiation
treatments starting next Tuesday, which certainly won't be increasing
his energy level. Sitting at a keyboard or at a computer will be very
difficult, and become increasingly more so. Much as I hate to say it,
I think that despite good intentions, Greg's involvement with music is
at this point down to listening to things he really likes. Between
increasingly frequent and necessary naps. Spirit willing/flesh weak, etc.

On a brighter note I should add that Greg hasn't lost his sense of
humor. I brought him back a couple of things from the Mott gigs in
London. Ian Hunter's "Diary of a rock'n'roll star" and Mott's "Brain
Capers" CD. Both signed by Hunter. Greg got the joke immediately and
quipped that he'd play a couple of cuts off it each day before going
for his radiation. To which I said 'definitely start with "The Moon
Upstairs"'. And he replied, with a grin, 'and end with "Death May Be
Your Santa Claus"'. At which point we laughed and clasped hands, a
high-five being a bit more than Greg could manage.

Steven,
Your relationship with Greg defines what true friendship really is. Remembering the good times, sharing the bad times and side by side, shoulder to shoulder, facing the future together. I will always remember your posts about Greg. All of us who have read them know that he must be a wonderful man to have people like you there for him.

Thanks, Frank.

Greg's is a solid guy, and it seems enormously unfair. Except that
he's been on borrowed time since his last round with cancer three
years ago, so we must value every day since as a plus. We'll make one
last effort to go for live music next Saturday. And we'll celebrate
getting a new Systems Theory and a new Greg Amov CD finished this
month. And maybe we'll celebrate his 50th birthday too in Nov. Beyond
that I think all that will be left to do is raise a glass (or two or
three) and send him on his way.

Re: Update from Systems Theory regarding Greg Amov's health

2009-11-03 by sdavmor

We're into the final stages now of his cancer. Greg has been in
at home hospice care since the middle of last week. He is heavily
sedated on Dilaudid, a very strong narcotic. He was moved to it
after morphine was no longer cutting it for his extreme pain.

Greg went to sleep on Sunday before noon and has been completely
non-responsive since then. Saturday evening was the last time he
engaged in any conversation, and that was only "yes", "no" and "it
hurts". He is expected to pass away in the next few days, and his
wife Diane has urged all friends and family that want to see him
to do so immediately. I am on my way to his house now.

Should Greg somehow still be alive on Friday he will be 50 years
old. Not that there will be anything to celebrate, since he will
be there in body but not much else. I have chosen Nov 6th as the
official release date of both his 3rd solo album "The Noble Gases"
and the new Systems Theory album "overfulnoisecascade".

His family and band-mates appreciate the fact that many progressive
music community members emailed, texted, phoned, etc., their well-
wishes. Since there won't be anything further to report, the next
time I post an update regarding Greg Amov will be to advise of his
death.

On a positive Greg Amov related note, our friend Kurt Barabas (UTS,
Amaron's Plight, Roswell Six) has offered me the use of his studio
and as much help as I need to get all the remaining music of Greg's
into releasable shape. That will be a project for 2010, after I get
his currently OOP solo albums "The Dark Within The Dark" and "Gecko
Highway" back into available status.

Re: Update from Systems Theory regarding Greg Amov's health (final)

2009-11-04 by sdavmor

Good morning,

it is with regret, but also relief, that I pass on that Systems
Theory member Greg Amov died last night. It was very peaceful
and quiet at the end, which was a relief after all the physical
struggle of the last few weeks. It was clear to everyone around
him during the afternoon that it would be sometime Tuesday, so
his family convened to be with him.

I do not yet know exactly what sort of memorial there will be,
or when / where it will be held. But something appropriate to
Greg's live and beliefs will be organized soon. I will pass on
that information when I have it.

Thanks to all that contacted the family through me to express
hope, support, sympathy, wishes for a speeding passing, etc.
That the various branches of the progressive music community
had so many people (hundreds) that responded during this crisis
meant a great a deal to Greg in his final days, and means a
great deal to me personally.

In the midst of the sadness of his passing, let me add a bright
note. Last night I got access to Greg's pair of DAWs (named
"Fripp" and "Eno"). Everything that I could have hoped to find
musically was there. The masters for his two OOP CDs were there,
plus several unreleased completed projects, some long-forgotten
projects, and new tunes earmarked for both solo, Systems Theory
and ViolinCyndee. So there will new music under his hame in the
next year or so, as well as the re-release of "The Dark Within
The Dark" and "Gecko Hightway".

Gregory Michael Amov, b. Nov 6th 1959, d. Nov 3rd 2009. RIP

I'm so sorry, Steve, to hear this sad, though not unexpected news. My sincere condolences to you and all who were close to Greg. Having lost my wife a few years ago, just short of her 50th birthday, I know how devastating it can be to lose someone close at such a young age.

In his memory, I will play the "Side Two" section from Soundtracks for Imaginary Movies on my radio programme Electric Storm Sunday evening.

It is heartening to hear of the material you have found and plan to release. I really look forward to hearing it someday soon. Greg's memory will indeed live on.

Thank you, Jim -- and thanks to all the rest of the mellotronists who
have commented here and at FaceBook, progressiveears, etc. Playing
side two of "SFIM" is a marvelous tribute to Gregory, since it opens
with one of his finest-ever compositions "Silent Service".

Mike Dickson and I have agreed that no matter what we do musically in
the future it will be called something else. Systems Theory was the
three of us and without Gregory it can't be the same thing. He was the
moderating glue in the mix. Our respect, love and admiration for him
requires that we bury the bandname with him.

Mike is hosting MP3s and jpegs of the first and second solo albums by
Greg, "The Dark Within The Dark" and "Gecko Highway". They will be
joined by his new album "The Noble Gases" this weekend, just as soon
as I get MP3s made (Sat?).

I am quite pleased with the material I have found for other projects
-- both those limited issue private runs for family only or for
specialized corporate projects. I will work diligently in the new year
to shape these into albums that do justice to Gregory.

Update from Systems Theory regarding Greg Amov's OOP albums

2009-11-07 by sdavmor

Mike Dickson is hosting the MP3s for both of Greg's OOP solo albums,
"The Dark Within The Dark" (Independent Rcords, 2001) and "Gecko
Highway" (Independent Records, 2005).

Until such time as I get these albums back into print, and organize
his remaining output into releasable product, these pages will serve
as a way for people to hear his music.

I will get his latest solo album "The Noble Gases" out the door over
the weekend.

Feel free to download and give away. Right now we'd simply like Greg's
music to be heard.

Update from Systems Theory regarding Greg Amov's new album "The Noble Gases"

2009-11-16 by sdavmor

This will be my only "promo post" on the subject.

My late bandmate Greg Amov's 3rd solo album is now available for
free download in VBR/HQ MP3 format. Extensive notes about the CD,
the process of its creation, and how to burn it to CD-R are now on
Mike Dickson's website. Complete artwork jpegs for cover, tray and
rom label will be added later today for you to use to create the
complete CD package, if you so desire. If not, just grab the MP3s
and stick them on your personal player.

Other Greg material will come out in 2010 and 2011, and maybe
beyond. I will space it out so it all doesn't get dumped at once,
and allow for each release to have some focus, attention and legs
of its own. I'll start with that which is the most complete and
ready to go, working through that which might require fixing and
patching to some very old material that does require restoration.
But anything I do will be done as unobtrusively as possible with
"how would Greg have approached this?" in mind.

Feel free to download and give away the albums in MP3. Right now
we'd simply like Greg's music to be heard.

Non-free print on-demand CD-R for all three of Greg's solo albums
will be available at CD Baby before the end of the year.

Non-free Ogg Vorbis and FLAC format downloads will be available
at www.mindawn.com before the end of the month.

Gregory Michael Amov, b. Nov 6th 1959, d. Nov 3rd 2009. RIP
