The Kooks - shine on

Looks like a 4000 to me. It looks taller and deeper than a 400.

There's a shot of the mellotronist's hands about halfway through the video that shows what looks to be the M4000 control panel, as with the over-the-shoulder shots. The tron is also elevated somewhat as shown in a wide shot. It also seems to be pretty beat to shit already for an M4000.

I remember seeing Mahogany Feet in Montreal in the '70s. Did a couple of gigs with them, too.

No...wait a moment...that was Mahogany Rush. Gee, I got all excited there for a moment.

Next thing you know, they'll be kicking over the drums, smashing their guitars and then set them on fire with lighter fluid. Kids these days have no respect!

They poured coke through the keys and stuck the tapes together after 6 months having already scarred the cabinet!

I expect it will need an overhaul in the not too distant future. I noticed a beer bottle sitting on it. Soon they will be swabbing that out of the inside. You guys need to install a "Beertron" which pressurizes the cabinet so much that it blows spilled liquids out before they can soil the tapes and gum up the works.

How about a 'beer cover' over the whole top of the machine just inside the cover. Anything that leaks inside would be caught by it, then by means of a small spigot and fan just underneath the keyboard, it would spray out all over the player's pants? Also activated by the device would be a digital recording of Martin and John laughing uproariously.

It could work...

Since coke is a light powder, wouldn't that help lube the tapes?

Yeah. When I started up Devotion, it was in Montreal where I'd just graduated from McGill. (We used to practise in the Electronic Music Studio -- summer -- because I could use the huge modular Moog and Hugh LeCaine's Sackbut, a very cool instrument.)

We started to get bookings around Quebec with the same agency that handled Mahogany Rush, who had their first album out. Since we did the Prog thing and they did their sort-of-Hendrix thing, it was a good fit. We did this one outdoor gig with them at McGill for Homecoming Week that was very cool, about 8,000 people showed up.

Frank was okay. He really liked our guitarist, Peter Follett, who is one-of-a-kind, but he kept to himself pretty much. We knew Jimmy Ayoub a lot better since our woodwind player had gigged a bit with him and also with his dad, Nick, a great jazz saxophonist.

Frank's a hell of a guitarist, though. They opened for King Crimson, Mk II (Boz and the gang) in 1972 at one of the CEGEPs (Quebec junior colleges) and that was a really great gig for them -- and KC.

So there you have it.

Rick
