SM?

Can anyone tell me if the M400SM originated from Streetly, or was it a
soley American variant? I hate the control panel face plate on it.
Curious in Cincinnati.

When I got my servo motor stuff installed by Streetly they wanted to
change my faceplate to that and also( I think) the sticker on the back
that had my serial number, Luckily they asked my permission and I
specified to keep it original.

If the black face is shiney, you should be able to peal the black sticker
off (it takes a lot of work) and you'll find a regular Mellotron face plate
underneath. Acetone helps, and it won't damage the silk screened writing on
the face plate. I have removed about a half dozen of them. Oddly, the
control panel face plate that was on the Black Mellotron was different from the
others I've seen and was a cheesy tin piece of crap that currently resides
in the Fairfax County dump.

Frank

This is what was under one of those black faceplates. I also removed the
"gold" inserts from the knobs and put brushed aluminum ones in to match the
faceplate. This is for #1334

This is the faceplate that was on 1562 when I first got it. I eventually
put stock knobs on it but the face plate itself was in such good shape that
I left it in place. It would come off if I wanted to remove it. Notice
that the labeling for tracks A, B & C are reversed.

If yours looks like this one, you may be screwed. Markus has some original
ones that he might part with. I have a couple but I'm not parting with
them

When John and Martin did a full restoration on #510 in 06 there was no mention of changing my original control panel, and I wouldn't have let them had they asked.
The control panel (flawless in my case thankfully) along with the flickering on/off switch and light are (to me) proof of having an authentic instrument.
Those black faced ones are ghastly, again in my opinion.

So does that mean the stylized M logo/black faceplate was a product of
Sound Sales? My machine, an M400SM (1407 with the big sticker on the
back and the black M400SM logo on the control panel faceplate) never had
bottom mount brackets for the spillbox - there were no holes drilled
for them. The spillbox brackets were at the top. When the later
version of the frame (rectangular side panels as opposed to swept back)
was introduced, did top mounting of the spillbox become the standard
procedure?

1562 was the same way when I acquired it. I bet there's a nice pretty
standard faceplate under the black sticker.

Looks like they were assembled differently from how the plans indicated, kind of like US cars from around that time.

Mine was. My big ugly sticker was on the back of mine, right above the
removable panel.

John moved my power supply away from the tape box and some other internal stuff that I didn't watch cause I was so busy talking.
