New short Mellotron tune

Re: New short Mellotron tune

Very well done Andy. I will forward this to my friends. What a great combination of sounds. Keep up the good work.

The shot of the tapes going will give some of the guys in this group a woody.

Wouldn't that be "positron?"

Hi Andy:

I enjoyed the piece also.

What 'tron and anti-tron sounds were you using?

Cheers,

Dan

More to the point, which ones didn't I use?
Ok, here we go....
Mk2 Violins
Mk2 Flute
Mk2 Brass
Boys Choir
Oboe
Bass Clarinet
New String section
New Viola (double tracked)
Chamber Woodwinds
And, only because I haven't currently got them on my tape frames at the moment. 8 Choir and Cello were played on the Memotron.
Needless to say, they weren't all played at the same time! Some were used just for the odd phrase.
Andy K
PS. I only spotted the typo on the titles after I loaded it onto YouTube. I aint changing it now!

As a postscript to my last post, I must say that if anyone is thinking of having either a new tape frame, or just tapes from Streetly, now is the time to do it. The current batch of tape they are using drives superbly, and I was able to back the tension off both pinch rollers and tape head pads considerably. The Flute/Violins/Brass tapes I've just got are stunning.

Well that is good news about the nice tape stock as I'm close to having enough dosh for another rack. So you can order double tracked stuff? I've never heard that before.

Cheers Doug.
Pleased to help in any way I can. Might even think about doing a "deconstruction" video showing the way that the individual parts work together, and how they were recorded.

Can you tell us about the black trim, control panel and cheek blocks?
Your mellotron looks and sounds great.

Dan.
Sorry, I don't think you can order double tracked sounds. What I meant in one of my earlier posts was that for Calembel I recorded the new Viola twice with very slightly different pitch settings to give the effect of more than one instrument.
Hope that clarifies things.

The look of my machine is due to JB & MS's wonderful restoration about 12 years ago.
As you can see from the vid, mine is one of the dreaded EMI machines, that was in tatters when I bought it. It had been rotting in someone's basement for at least 10 years before that. Streetly completely restored it to health, re-aligning everything, basically rebuilding it from scratch. The control panel was black originally black, but the guys gave it a paint job, so as to look like new. Any parts that were missing, they either had as spares, or were able to manufacture.
The front cover was missing, so one had to be made, hence the black. (It's white on the other side).
The black trim is something I added a couple of years ago to protect the edges of the cabinet from everyday wear and tear.
It plays like a brand new machine, particularly with the new tapes, and I love it to bits.
However, I do get asked to do the occasional session or small gig, and I am no longer prepared to risk damaging it or doing my back in lifting it. That's why the Memotron is such a worthy substitute. It's cool to look at, very fast in use, extremely portable, and, would you believe it, it even sounds like a Mellotron!............................................ But it's not!

On the subject of control panels and their differences, I consider myself very lucky to have a pristine original one (silver), perfect knobs, on/off switch (including the sacred flicker lite and red cover), just spot on.
But ANY Mellotron control panel is a good control panel, I just have a preference.
Thanks again to John and Martin for the flawless restoration in 2006.
Best,

Hi Andy:

Thanks for the clarification.

How about your next LOTR tune being something obscure respecting the First Age?

Cheers,

You're fortunate to have perfect knobs.

Andy,
That is wonderful... And putting it on YouTube has helped me explain to so many folks I've been annoying on just what a Mellotron is and how it works...
Boggs...

"But when you think of me tune in the frequency, Come out and play come out and play"
...Gandalf Murphy and The Slambovian Circus of Dreams

"Nothing can change the shape of things to come."
...Max Frost
"Any talent that we are born with eventually surfaces as a need"
