F. Scott Fitzgerald trying to explain the sound of the M300 violins

F. Scott Fitzgerald trying to explain the sound of the M300 violins

2009-02-26 by Mark Pring

" I was reminded of something- an elusive rhythm, a fragment of lost words, that I had heard somewhere a long time ago. For a moment a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man's, as though there was more struggling upon them than a wisp of startled air. But they made no sound, and what I had almost remembered was uncommunicable forever."

Two 1968 violins will do that to you. New tape set, Mark?

Yes, but the sound I want has proved to be elusive, I think I might need an M300 to get it and my wife most certainly won't let me go there. I haven't heard it from an M400, Mark II or M4000 to my knowledge. In some ways I think it might be better to have it as unattainable goal, the holy grail of mellotron sounds for me. In any case I have grown very fond of the Mark II strings on the old tape set.

This thread had me curious. I'm not very familiar with the M300 sound so I listened at the Mike Dickson site. What are some examples of songs/bands that use M300 strings? I'm guessing the traditional Prog bands didn't use.
Thanks,
John

Mike Pinder used one on To Our Children's Children's Children and Wooly
played one with Barclay James Harvest, which, I believe, is the elusive
sound that Mark wants to reproduce.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] F. Scott Fitzgerald trying to explain the sound of the M300 violins

It's the sound of the M300 played live, Barclay James Harvest Live pretty much captures it. I understand that some of the tron parts were overdubbed later in the studio as the tron broke down during the concert, so it was presumably possible to duplicate the sound in the studio. However I don't find the tron sound on the studio BJH albums very interesting nor the albums themselves if truth be told.

I think Woolly uses the Mark II 3 violins in the studio these days but uses the M300 violins live, however if his live album is anything to go by, to my ears at least they sound awful.

Mark

PS I think I might just have an M300 violins obsession, I wonder if there is a medical term for it?

Try M3VSOP. Clear, slighty earthy, a bit stringy. Wonderful in a snifter ;-)

Well it isn't in DSM IV but if there are enough sufferers it might make DSM V

Mark:

If you need an M300 violins fix, try Gentle Giant's 2nd
album 'Acquiring the Taste' and listen to the 1st song, 'Pantagruel's
Nativity'.

This should bugger you up real good...

Cheers and best wishes for your recovery; it's horrible, just
horrible...

I can also suggest "Three Friends". The vamp at the end has wonderful interplay between the very-churchlike organ and the M300 they were using at that time. It's one of those supreme mellotron moments, IMHO. I only wish Kerry Minnear had used it more. I think he had a very good approach to the instrument.
