Focus

2009-02-07 by Mike Dickson

I've just started listening to Focus (at long last beyond their
eponymous track and 'Sylvia') and I have to say I'm really quite pleased
so far. The only one I've given any real attention to is 'Moving Waves'
(which features the stellar 'Le Clochard'). What else is recommended?

Incidentally, I find the Mellotron about the least interesting thing
about 'Le Clochard', despite its high rating among lovers of the
instrument. The guitar phrasing is breathtaking.

Focus 3 and Hamburger Concerto are the other two albums to listen to. The first album, In and Out of Focus is interesting but much more commercial. Thijs van Leer's contrapuntal bass lines are wonderful. You can tell he has a trained classical mind and cites Bach and Bartok as his major influences.

I loved this band back in the day. I could never understand why no one seemed to take them seriously. Maybe it was the yodeling, but Van Leer was a great singer and a good keys player.

It was definitely the yodeling, Frank. Hocus Pocus was like a six
minute novelty song. No one took it seriously - at least no one I
knew. I didn't even know they had albums - I take that back, I remember
running across them in the records stores, but on the basis of the
comedic aspects of the only material I'd heard from them, I wasn't about
to invest any money to find out more about them. Then again, I was only
14-15 at the time.

Hocus Pocus may be a novelty song (as is Yellow Submarine and quite a few by the Who) but you can't stop at that. The playing on Hocus is wonderful and it should have made you enquire more! When Focus played that song on BBC back in '71, the entire Polydor pressing plants were turned over to producing Moving Waves. The live performance was astonishing, funny and impressive.

Although I'm no Focus fan and wasn't one back in the day, I was aware of them and at the least appreciated the quality of the musicianship they showed. While a lot of their stuff was a bit over the top, in the context of the music of the time they were certainly forward thinking and if they had just a little longer-lasting success back when they were world tourers we would still be hearing yodeling in today's versions of prog music...

Sorry Martin, I'm not trying to put down Focus. In using the term
novelty song, I was describing how it came across to me - the feelings,
reaction, and limited understanding of the loutish youth that I was in
the mid 1970s. From your statement, it obviously appeared much earlier
than. I didn't have the discernment to have appreciated the finesse of
the performances on the track. I could listen to it now, and probably
be able to appreciate the capability and effort involved, but not back
then. And the yodeling would still put me off.

This list, and the previous, are the only forums that I've heard anyone
mention Focus in a positive light (or any at all, for that matter) since
their glory days of mid-western American airplay on FM radio. There was
no one recommending that I listen to this band and as a result my
curiosity about them was never piqued. It has been now, and though I
have a feeling that it still won't be my cup of tea, I'll give them a
fair listen. If you (or anyone) have any recommendations, I'll do my
best to track them down.

And if by some miraculous stroke of fate (or conspiracy), Yellow
Submarine were the only Beatles track I had ever heard, I would still be
walking around today, wondering what the fuck all the fuss was about ;-)

johnb

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Focus

2009-02-09 by Tom Doncourt

I happened to be in Manny’s one day in 72(I think) when the entire Focus entourage came in and bought , of all things, a Mellotron. Why would a dutch band be buying a mellotron in N.Y.C? I don’t have the answer for that. My dad really liked them probably because of the jazz influence.
There weren’t many guitarists around like Jan Ackerman those days- I don’t think I ever saw any one doing hammer strokes before.
We saw them at the Felt Forum (Aerosmith the backup band??!!).. I saw them again at the Beacon –they followed Gentle Giant. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody- how do you follow a show like that. To top it off, none of Thij’s synthesizers worked and he had to sing all those parts . They looked really stressed out. Great band, it wasn’t easy in those days (or now) for a progressive band to get that far- a major tour and a string of albums on a big label.

I have all the Focus albums. After "Moving Waves" you want to try
"Focus III" which is where the single "Sylvia" came from, and
"Hamburger Concerto". Unless you find yourself wanting to dig further
that's all you'll need. The self-titled is OK but not essential.
You'll probably find "III" to be a bit long (double LP). "Hamburger
Concerto" is my favourite Focus record, FWIW.

I quite like the 21st century version of the band that has released
"Focus 8" and "Focus 9", but since it's not a "classic" lineup (no Jan
Akkerman) many Focus purists don't think it's really Focus at all.
It has van Leer and the material is good and it sounds like Focus
mainly due to the flute, Hammond and a rather good impersonation of
Akkerman by the guitarist. YMMV.

Mon braves,

Does anyone have a cd copy of Jan Akkerman and Thijs van Leer's 1985 album 'Focus' that they would like to part with or maybe copy for me? I really want to get hold of this. Maybe a good mp3 download at 320kps via Yousendit? Thanks darlings!

Subject: [newmellotrongroup] Focus

Mon braves,

Does anyone have a cd copy of Jan Akkerman and Thijs van Leer's 1985 album 'Focus' that they would like to part with or maybe copy for me? I really want to get hold of this. Maybe a good mp3 download at 320kps via Yousendit? Thanks darlings!

Best,

Martin
