Listen, I love the mellotron as much as anyone. Its just that many more people consider the electric guitar iconic than mellotrons. Hence the enormous difference in resale prices. That is what this discussion was about.

In your opinion Mellotrons are not an icon.
In my opinion they are!

On a scale of 1-100, how much do you love Mellotrons? (with 100 meaning you absolutely adore them)

Who else would mount the CMC-10 on the cabinet?

Yeah, early numbered trons could easily have gone to DMI for "upgrades". But if so, it begs the question of why wasn't it upgraded to an SMS?

It is if somebody is willing to pay it. I'm puzzled by the Dallas sticker, isn't 282 a really early number to have that?

Looks like a truck ran over it, then dragged it a few hundred yards….

$5800? In this economy? I don’t see how anyone will be selling their Mellotrons anytime soon… People are much more interested in paying for food and gas.

Speaking of food: there's always room for Mellotrons!

RE: [newmellotrongroup] My $400 offer was turned down!!

2008-10-23 by David Jacques

I received a call from a man in Michigan who wanted to sell his mint 1956 B3 and Leslie. He lost his job and was being forced to sell his prized musical possessions. I wanted to help him out but I could not afford the freight to California. I was able to refer a buyer to him and am happy that he now has a few thousand dollars to help him and his family through these difficult times.

The point being is that we will probably be seeing much more of this. Most economists are predicting a deep recession that will last at least another year. Some are even predicting a depression.

I have stopped purchasing any musical instruments and hope that the time will not come when I have to sell them to feed my family. May God help our friends who are not so fortunate.

We'll find out. I'm gonna put a real nice one up soon. Not looking for $5,800, though.

Hi-
Nope, not even $1800 (if that). Brass capstan (hope it's straight), hums, and it almost looks like someone sat on the keyboard. Warped cheek blocks, maybe moisture damage. They didn't say if it works. No evidence of a cover on the spillbox, either. What are the voices?

Okay- I know I’ll get into trouble on this but........ Please explain to me ( as if to an idiot) why the value of an instrument that is 35+ years and one of only 1000 or so in the world shouldn’t double or triple or even be ten times the original asking price? I’ve watched the price of fender and gibson guitars that my friends bought with paper route money go out the roof so why not mellotrons? I’m not saying I want this to be the case , I’m just wondering why it isn’t so. $5800 IS a lot of money considering that the machine will need a couple of thousand to bring it up to optimum playing order but it didn’t look that bad. Besides that, a new MkVI is only $1000 more and an M4000 is only
$1330 more. Both end up being cheaper if you take those massive
repair bills into account.

Because there's a lot more to fixing that machine than meets the eye. Straightening warped keys is a bitch. It takes a lot of time. I've spent months working on a keyboard (spare time of course) because every key is different from the next and no two keyboards are exactly alike.
Also, fewer people desire Mellotrons than Fender guitars. Few people even know what one is.
Lastly, sprucing up a Fender is a lot easier than fixing up a Mellotron. I can tell you from experience that you can sink a ton of hours into one to get it right.

The Mellotron currently on eBay will never sell for the asking price. I will be selling one soon that is quite nice. It has a very good motor, an SMS-5 with half speed switch and is properly fixed up. It will be far less expensive than the one currently listed.

Re: My $400 offer was turned down!!

For an obect to be an icon it just has to stand for represent
something else. Popularity has nothing to do with it. In that sense I
think the Mellotron is as much an icon as a moogue synthesiser or a
Hammond B3, even if most people don't know what a Mellotron is. Not
that I think the one on Ebay is worth $5800, but of course it's worth
whatever somebody else will pay for it.

My $400 offer was turned down!!

2008-10-25 by Mark Pring

Simple: The guitar is an iconic item. The Mellotron is not.

Why not? An icon is only something which represents something else. Popularity has nothing to do with it. The Mellotron is an icon. The Mellotron on Ebay is worth whatever somebody else will pay for it.

In your opinion Mellotrons are not an icon.
In my opinion they are!

Listen, I love the mellotron as much as anyone. Its just that many more people consider the electric guitar iconic than mellotrons. Hence the enormous difference in resale prices. That is what this discussion was about.
On a scale of 1-100, how much do you love Mellotrons? (with 100 meaning you absolutely adore them)

Hey fellas it was a comment, not anything more.
I've had my M400 since 1975.
Don't know what I'd do without it, so I rate it a 90 out of 100.

101!! The ideas about icons are interesting.... The mellotron is an
icon for progressive rock music---but if you are in a progressive rock
band trying to sell C.D.s and book performances you begin to understand
that particular genre doesn't generate alot of money.Oh well, they will
have to pry my dead fingers off of my little off-white machine so its
value is relative.

Frank, there are very few people whose opinion on this subject would be
backed up by as much experience.

I'm guessing it's the Midieval Woodwind. I have the Woodwinds 2 and
the bassoon doesn't sound as strong as in the video.
