Help needed

2008-08-26 by Rick Blechta

Does anyone on the list have an knowledge/experience with the Clavia
Nord Stage 88 keyboard? A friend is thinking of buying one for the
university he teaches for and has asked my help? Is it worth the $3500
it will cost?

Thanks in advance!

Rick

It's a completely useless keyboard with no redeeming qualities.

Sorry about that. I thought you were asking about the Clamidia 'Raucous 50'. Mine's currently on fire. Apologies all round.

I just looked at one while I was evaluating the $1,300 units. It is a really nice unit and it is made so that you are not stuck with that piano ROM from that time and place, fully upgradeable. If it were for and individual I would try to find a used unit or a close alternative but for a university lab it is a very good choice.

Tom Brislin used one live for about a year and ditched it. It is very light in weight but has no weighted keys and Tom did not like the feel of the instrument. He also said he didn't like the piano sound(s).
That's all I know. You can email him at tom@spiraling.net and ask for more information.
hope this helps,

The Electro has non-weighted action, but the Stage 88 is weighted.
The Stage 88 is basically a Nord Electro and Nord Lead in one package with weighted keys. I agree that the ACOUSTIC piano sounds leave much to be desired (assuming they are the same as on the Electro), but they are sort of included as an afterthought. The keyboard was initially intended to have "Electro-mechanical" keyboard sounds (thus the original name "Electro") and the electric piano, hammond, and clavinet sounds are all really good in my opinion.
If acoustic piano samples are a necessity I would say pass on it. But if Wurly's and Rhodes' and Clavs are what you are looking for, it is a really nice board.
Disclaimer: I have only ever played (and own) an Electro, so, while I do know that the Stage 88 is fully weighted, I cannot attest to its "feel", not that I would have much to say about it anyway.
I use an Electro and a Lead for live stuff, and you will need to pry them from my cold dead hands.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to write to me about the Stage
88. I've passed it on to my friend and we'll see if Concordia
University in Montreal buys one. They will NOT be buying the Clamidia
'Raucous 50' that Martinge recommended!

Cheers,

Rick
