Epitaph

2008-08-10 by David Jacques

Well, I was truly sorry that I found this on YouTube. And I am glad I did not see these guys when they were in LA. A very lackluster performance of Epitaph. I think that whatever the keyboardist is playing for the “Mellotron” may possibly be the worst sounding samples I have yet to hear. And the end is rather embarrassing as he bends the pitch up and then releases the wheel before he releases the chord. The vocalist’s phrasing is completely off… Just a bit depressing after seeing Crimson in 1969…

It’s really a shame as Michael Giles and McDonald are from the original band. Peter Giles’ bass playing with that slapping popping crap is so out of the style of the music. What happened to that great Fender flat round string sound? He certainly played great bass on Cirkus.

After seeing 5 seconds of this, In think it is the 21st century schizoid band. And yes, it does suck. They were using stock Korg, "tape sampler" shit.

Actually, I should have written “In the Wake of Poseidon”, not Cirkus.

I didn't enjoy the drumming, are you sure that the strings are even mellotron samples? M-tron would sound better.

I saw videos of 21'st century Schizoid band and also of Jon Wetton
performing Court of the Crimson King. I remember wondering why they
weren't using a real mellotron up there. I mean, these were guys who were
there from the beginnings- they could tour with a mellotron if they wanted
one. It is a kind of timely thing to think about after the Nick Awde book
coming out.
Most of these musicians he interviewed didn't really even like the tron.
They used it because it was the best thing they could get for making
string sounds but they didn't really appreciate the instrument itself. Most
of them were happy to get rid of it when sampling became available. Being
in King Crimson or Genesis or Barclay James Harvest did not guarantee a
love of the Mellotron.
I traveled mine around since 1974. Before I had the servo card put in I
had some problems with pitch dropping but nothing i couldn't fix- after
that only minor adjustments. i can at least vouch for the reliability of
the M400. Now at the age of 52 and # 390 being 36 I am not so crazy
about lugging her around and letting her get beat up. I've recorded alot
of samples from my own tape sets and also from Mellotron Archives for
live playing. There is nothing specifically immoral about playing
mellotron samples. Still it is dissappointing not to have it on stage. I
saw Fiona Apple awhile back at the Beacon and it was sort of sad to hear
the nice chamberlin parts from Tidal played on a sampler.

Woolly still uses an M400 and took it on the Maestoso "tour" in I think 2002 ( First gig was the last gig ). I think he is still fan of mellotrons.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Epitaph

The bad tron samples weren't what grabbed me first, I must admit. It
was the sloppy, barely-be-bothered playing. I'd have been really
bummed out if I'd seen this live.

As yet another bassist, I found the bass playing offensive enough that I stopped the video shortly after Mr Giles got started. Slapping has its place: in a Sly Stone song for example.

Now that was pretty neat! I would say that performance was definitely not listless...not to mention the obvious choice between the two, aesthetically.

Also, give me real strings over whatever that simply-not-related-to-mellotron-at-all-ever sound was coming from our scraggly progsters. Yeeesh. I'm going to chalk that one up to a post I wrote months back about 60's groups' seemingly uncanny ability to forget what it was that made them cool.

There's lots of that about, nowadays, I'm afraid...

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Epitaph

2008-08-11 by Jon

They're the standard string samples from the Triton generation of Korg stuff and they aren't Mellotron samples, they just apply a cheesy crackle and static effect to their own samples to create the "Tape Strings" pad.

Are those the same samples that come with the Triton?

After seeing 5 seconds of this, In think it is the 21st century schizoid band. And yes, it does suck. They were using stock Korg, "tape sampler" shit.

Probably, I have them in my triton, as well as my own, and when I saw them live that's what they sounded like to me. Their not bad once you take all the effects out of them. They sound "tronish." Not nearly as good as the Pinder samples or others I have heard, including mine.

The ones on My Pro X don't sound like that. The flutes are OK, the strings not as much and the choir needs a lot of work, but comes off reasonably well.

Re: Epitaph

2008-08-18 by Doug Berg

I have very personal feelings of said subject. Yeah it was a weak
rendition on most counts, but so was the rest of the material. Yeah I
bought the DVD, on the other hand there has been worse done to these
and it was interesting to see some sort of updated presentation thus
catching the attention of an audience mainly unaware of these early
tunes. And how about all those other groups that have done the same
thing, let's not go into the post Mellotron Genesis or Yes periods.
What I fail to understand and seems to be common in most live outings
is why can't these players use a more realistic string sound? There
are enough good samples out there. The Crimson cuts would have come
off a lot more realistic if he used the Mellotron CD or even a
Memotron.
A couple of weeks ago I went to see the Stylistics and all the string
parts were those weak thin lackluster Triton patches. C'mon, at least
get an E4 or Kurtzweil and load up something with a little life into
it.
The nights I play and the M400 stays home, it's the Korg 01,Yamaha
SY77, and the E4 rack with the essential Emulator library and the
Mellotron CD and guess what, the strings sound like strings, a trumpet
sounds like a trumpet and if I need a Farfisa 5 or Moog patch it's just
a turn of a dial. Would this be so hard for others to do and if so
please enlighten me.....Doug

They must not appreciate the qualities of the more realistic samples
and they must like the sounds they are using. Who knows why.
Excessive cerumen? Auditory canal fungus? Brain erosion? All of the
above?
