stuck screw?

stuck screw?

2008-07-24 by jeffc@netaxs.com

anyone have a tip for a frozen and rusted tape hold down screw?
this frame shows lots of rust on the screws/washers.
i have managed to get ALL BUT ONE SCREW free.
the frustration is growing.
i need this frame loaded TODAY for delivery tomorrow.

why is always what is supposed to be the easy part that ends
up... scewing me? [pun intended angrily]

i just can't get one to budhge, and now the screwtop is starting
to get worn down, so the scrwdriver does not sit tightly... and
it's getting worse...

nevermind... i ended up cutting the 2 old tapes that were under the
stubborn screw, and taking the the tape retaining bar down to the
workbench so i could extract the bastard.

this is again for kurt's machine that had been in a damp environment
for 10+ years - he needs a lot of little hardware replaced, but with
the dollar hitting all-time lows in the currency market, it's just
too damn expensive for him to do all that's needed.

now it's time to start threading new tapes... WHEE!

Jeff,
Use a Dremel tool and a cut-off disk to cut the screwdriver notch a bit deeper and to clean it up. also, a little Liquid Wrench applied from underneath should sink into the threads in an hour or so and then you should be able to remove the screw. It is always important to have the proper size screwdriver blade so that you don't bugger up the screw head.
Good luck,
Frank

thanks frank - i really appreciate it!
i did manage to get the screw loosened.
i JUST finished lacing the frame.
only one mishap - a tape slipped out of my fingers and jumped
back down inside... the hazard of going alone...

i HAD 2 perfect screwdrivers.
one of them jumped out of the slot on me and the tip broke.
the other one is a bit shorter and not as comfortable :(

once i got rolling on lacing tapes it went quite well.
took about 3 hours, including rolling the old tapes back on
spools and one break to sit down and let the back chill.

but my back right now... oh man...
and i have a 3 hour drive to do tomorrow...
time for a couple shots of maker's mark and bed...

thanks again frank!

enjoy your weekend folks...
i'm of to a place with no cell reception, no computer, no tv...
just excessive alcohol and floating around in a pool...

Get one of those turnaround screw extractors. One side in a drill or adjustable torque scre cuts a cone sort of shape in the screwtop and the other side cuts threads in the screw andextracts it at the same time. Every hardware/DIY has them.
