King Crimson's Exiles-piano or Tron?

King Crimson's Exiles-piano or Tron?

2008-07-24 by marabus

I was listening to K.C.'s Lark's Tongue in Aspic yesterday and wondered
who played the piano part in Exiles? Is that piano played on a Mellotron?
On the liner notes no piano is listed.Just curious.

Mind that info was from Wikipaedia, but I don't think that Fripp can play the piano that well or the tron either for that matter. I'll stop talking to myself now and start taking the pills again.

It's a real piano, played by John Wetton.

He also wrote the remarkable melody for the bridge that modulates about
four times.

Lots of uncredited stuff on those albums - David Cross' flute parts, also to be heard on live stuff from the period (confirmed by DC, FWIW), Marc Charig's cello on 'Red'...

I remember seeing Fripp play what looked to be an Italian electronic
piano or some other small keyboard sometimes run through a fuzzbox.
That was during the Larks's Tongue tour. On the recordings I have
heard what sounds very much like a Rhodes through distortion box ( a
classic and rarely discussed technique, killer on power chords).

I’ve seen it sitting on top of his mellotron in 73-74- I remember thinking it was a Hohner pianet but I could be wrong.
I used to play my Rhodes through a roland funny cat that did fuzz and harmonic shifts-fun.

I think I have seen a Hohner Pianet N on top of the Mellotron used by David Cross in some of those period piccies.

I have a love/hate relationship with Pianets. Great sound, crap to play.

Ok a pianet. I was wondering how they got that massive dynamic power chord that I could get from a Rhodes but not the (Crumar) Roady .

I saw the rig close up in Montreal and they definitely used pianets. Both Cross and Fripp had them on the mellotrons. On some of the live recordings from this era, you can hear them quite clearly, especially in the improv pieces.

Distortion boxes. The new multi-effects units don't seem to do
distortion very well. The old Big Muff was always good. What's good
out there now?

Um, the Big Muff? (EH still makes them)

I recommend the Wattson Super Fuzz if you like the olde Shin-
Ei/Univox Super-Fuzz:

http://wattson-fx.com/

I got one recently and it nails the olde Super-Fuzz sound to a tee,
so my Big Muff is on the shelf. Or for a more exotic sound, the Zvex
Fuzz Factory:

http://www.zvex.com/vexter.html

Got one of them too.
