Does anybody know which organ sound they used? Any recommendations for
musical examples of the MkII organs? I know that Pinder used the Church
Organ sound extensively, but what about the other organs?

The Cirkus organ is a Lowrey organ recording on the MkII I think- I played it on Jerry Korb’s MkI last summer.
The intro to Seven Stones is the Hammond on the MkII.

Thanks for the info. This contradicts the listing of lead sounds on Markus’ site.

Oh yeah, it's been mentioned here before. I've got to stop using
Marcus' and M-Tron's naming conventions and refer to the station
location instead.
so...
Right keyboard:
Station 1C - Is this the Cirkus organ?
Station 5A - How about this one?
Station 5C - Maybe this one?
Station 6C - both Mellotron.com and Chandor Chasma refer to this as
Church Organ. I believe this is the one on Seven Stones and the one
that Pinder favored.
Is the organ on the left keyboard the same as any of the above?
What is the Harpsichord Effect? Is it not a real harpsichord?

I think 5a is the Seven Stones sound. I remember 5c as the Cirkus sound
although someone who actually owns a MkII would know for sure. I've
played around with the "hammond' organ on the Pinder sample disk and it
sounds like a dead ringer for "Seven Stones". The 6c Church organ is the
sound Pinder used. I hope Markus doesn't die or the world end if I am
mistaken in any of this!

Brian Kehew's 2nd MkII has standard MkII tapes, so he could readily tell which organ is which, but I don't believe that Brian is on this list.6C is definitely Pinder's choice.Frank SamagaioGas prices getting you down? Do you know if the MKII’s original organ sounds were taken from a direct output on the Lowrey?

Interestingly.............or maybe not, TCotCK (abbreviated just to annoy)was recorded by sending the MKII through a Wem stack and miking that(or so we've been told) but when the MKIIs came into us, they had been modified to a 1/4" jack output and maybe this was for direct injection but who knows for certain. I don't, my mum Betty doesn't and neither does the bloke down the pub with a whippet.

In all the photos of that-era KC that I've seen, they're using HiWatt stacks (they were also endorsers of HiWatt) and this is what Ian told me in 2005 they used for the recording of the album. I can't see them using HiWatt onstage and switching to something else in the studio. They tried to record the album as much "off the floor" as they could and it seems to me that they'd just drag their usual equipment into the studio and play.
Has anyone seen any photos that refute my claim? That could give this discussion a lead or two.
Maybe Ian didn't remember clearly what they'd used when he talked to you, Frank. Being a sax player primarily, he'd probably just think "that bloody big amp behind me" when he was playing. In my experience, sax players get big johnsons discussing makes of saxes and what reeds and mouthpieces they like. They couldn't care less about amplifiers. Guitarists, on the other hand... ;)

Hey Martin,
Tell us more about the condition of the Crimson trons when you received them. The famous pictures on the web show one of the Mark II’s (the one with the handles on the side) almost completely destroyed. I saw Ian bash the top of that tron during Mars at the West Palm Beach Festival in 1969. No wonder….
So what did you have to do to restore them?
2008-07-08 by Rick Blechta
That may well be so. I recall one other time that he wasn't so sure, stating either a Marshall or a Hiwatt stack. Remember, Pinder's memory wasn't all that hot either (by his own admission). Gotta get back to my Selmer Series 10 with Selmer mouthpiece, reverse ligature, and Vandoren reeds...
Frank
No, no, no! It's got to be a Berg Larsen mouthpiece, otherwise you'll probably sound like one of those bloody classical players! Although, with the Larsen, you might want to have the facing reground to open it up more.

Hey Martin,
Tell us more about the condition of the Crimson trons when you received them. The famous pictures on the web show one of the Mark II’s (the one with the handles on the side) almost completely destroyed. I saw Ian bash the top of that tron during Mars at the West Palm Beach Festival in 1969. No wonder….
So what did you have to do to restore them?
Martin told me that one of them was rabid and had to be put down.

Great story, Martin… and thanks…
Watching King Crimson Mark I play for two days of that festival certainly changed my musical life. As a 14 year old hearing real progressive rock with a Mellotron was certainly inspirational. Ever since sitting in the rain that cold Friday night I have been enamored with the history of that band….
When I saw the pictures of the Crimson trons on the web I could not believe how they could be in such disastrous shape. Such history… I am glad that the Poseidon tron is safe with you guys.

King Crimson - Trons
Okay Dave, you asked nicely!
Both MKIIs had been stored in a removal company's lockup and were covered head to toe in black, sticky diesel dust. They were unbelievably rough. Bearing in mind that these were the first restorations for John and myself and I had no knowledge whatsoever of procedures. I couldn't even take the keyboards off and so I was given very menial tasks and rightly so. John stripped them down to the components and built them back up, cleaning everything prior to reassembly. Not polishing and gleaming, just removing the years of filth. Luckily the tapes had been cycled to safe positions where the majority was spooled and clean. Just the hanging loops needed the alcohol treatment. I think John may have had to strengthen the cabinets but this was in 1990 and a long time ago. Anyway, they worked and we took the CK MKII down to Real World for the recording of Thrak along with Roberts M400s. They were in a semi circle in the control room and they worked a treat but got little use sadly. The Wake of P. MKII has been with us ever since and now needs restoring again along with the M400s. Sad considering the time and effort and little money earned. That's not Robert's fault, we just undercharged enormously in those naive days. It was a hobby and we were working on the Crimso 'trons. What a fix!
Best,
Martin

My question: Does Martin feign ignorance or is that an inborn trait?
2008-07-08 by lsf5275@aol.com
This may
account for the fact that it looks like it has had a hard life. And
probably Peter Sinfield too.
