M400 Controls

M400 Controls

2008-05-02 by Mark Pring

The control knobs on the M400 have a very familiar look to them, I'm sure they were used on some other UK electrical equipment in the 1970's, Fidelity radios or record players ( nobody would call Fidelity Hi-Fi), anybody know?

Mark

They were a standard hifi/radio/everything else type knob made by Bulgin and
not specifically designed for mellotrons.

Speaking of knobs, I'm looking for a replacement tape selector knob for my M400.
Are these a special order or might I find an old one in a electronics surplus store?

Thanks,
Andy

as a few people have seen, my track selector knob is not original
and does not match, but it still works just fine. i actually broke
my original years ago by overtightening the set screw. i did the
same thing to a minimoog knob once. minimoog knobs are cheap and
pretty easy to find. the m400 knobs are not so easy to find, at
least here in the states and i don't recall the price on them.
someday i should replace my original, but for now my substitute
is working, if a little unattractive.

Martin, do you guys have knobs made or do you just have a lot from years
past ? Most knobs cost more than the controls they are connected to these days.

Hi Gino,

We buy them new as we know the company that has the original Bulgin
compression moulds. The M4000 has the original pitch knob and slightly smaller
volume and tone knobs. The mould for the middle sized knob has long since bitten
the dust but the smaller version looks fine and accurate. Pedants? You bet.

I can attest to the fact that they look and feel right.

So tell me, Martin, just how much money will it take for me to get my
hands on those knobs?
