6 track tapes

6 track tapes

2008-04-05 by Mark Pring

I have decided on the six sounds I want and had
thought of having 2 tape frames

A)
Split choir
Mark II Flute
M300a 2 violins ( What a surprise )

B)
Clarinet
Cello
Mark II 3 violins
( Probably in that order )

It crossed my mind that I could get all 6 on one tape.

Does any body have any experience with the six track
tapes? Is it easy or to get the individual voices?

Mark

No can do Mark!

This is how it works (example). Move the track selector as follows:

Position A. Flute mixed with Oboe
Position A+B. Oboe mixed with Clarinet
Position B. Clarinet mixed with Alto Sax
Position B+C Alto Sax mixed with Brass
Position C. Brass mixed with three violins

So you see, there are six tracks*, but only five voices, none of them solo,
although you could get one solo voice and have only 4 sounds, for example, by
having selector position B be Clarinet mixed with Alto Sax and then track
selector position C be Alto Sax and Brass. Then, when the track selector is in
the B+C position it would yield only the sound of the Alto Sax. Marvelous
fun and a very clever offering by Streetly.

*
1. Flute
2. Oboe
3. Clarinet
4. Alto Sax
5. Brass
6. Three Violins.

Frank

Hi Mark-

I agree. Due to mixing, the 6-Track format would
be a bear for selecting the right voices. Maybe all
strings or all brass would be a direction to go.

But, it may even get more bizzare(slap me if I'm
wrong on this). If the track widths are correct, and
you have the selector centered on a voice, you should
have a little sound from each side voice. Using your
selections as an example; center on Flute, and you
would hear a little Split Choir and M300A violins in
the mix. What a party!!

Sounds like the "mixing" situation in the Chamberlin M's - there are 2
channels so you can "mix" if you want - or just operate the 2 channels as a
pan between right and left.

RE: [newmellotrongroup] 6 track tapes

How 6 track tapes work!

The idea behind 6 track tapes is to provide 5 unique blends. Here's
how..........

You have the possibility of positioning your headblock in 5 positions:

A / A+B / B / B+C / C.

When you choose your 6 tracks, say Flute/Violins/Brass/String Section/Eight
Choir/Church Organ, they will be allocated as follows:

A =                                 Flute / Violins

A+B = Violins / Brass

B =                                 Brass / SS

B+C = SS / Eight

C =                                 Eight / Church Org.

You can create 5 unique blends depending on how wild you want to make your
choices.

By necessity, these tapes will be tuned up to avoid hazardous clashings of
pitch which exists to some extent in all Mellotron recordings.

Best,

Martin and John

It seems to be a good idea with a name that doesn't quite fit. Aren't
we talking more mix than track ? It addresses a firm need for
certain.

If you're calling Martin, I suggest 10:00 p.m. EDT, except on weekends when you can call anytime between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. EDT

Don't worry that he's 5 hours ahead of that. He certainly does not mind being woken up.

I can assure you that the best time to call Martin is 5 PM EDT. Then he is
usually just back from the pub and willing to send you things for free. Also,
calling him when he is just about to sit down for a meal with his family is
great fun.
