And loaded with Freeman String Symphonizer, too.
Then you'll want to acquire a copy of Pete Sinfield's solo album, "Still" that has "Song of the Seagoat" on it. A perfect melding of classical/prog/shit. But very pastoral.

Please be advised that the most important word above is shit. This has to be one of the worst records ever recorded. Yes, I own it. But it is in pristine condition because it has only been played a few times. Usually it was played back in the day when I wanted to make my friends laugh.

Concur. It's absolute excrement. Aside from the fact that Sinfield has a voice that could best be described in tactful terms as breath-light and completely and utterly off every fucking key known to humanity, the lyrics are clearly the floor sweepings from the King Crimson repertoire; those that even Greg Lake pointed at and laughed. When I first bought it I got it on vinyl back in the days when it had been deleted and was scarce. I cannot remember being more disappointed by anything within the King Crimson 'family' of records, except perhaps the first time I heard 'Exposure'.

Hi, Jim.
A) For me, the most tron drenched recording is still The Moody Blues' To Our Children's Children Children:
- M300 harpsichord (arm laid across the keys) as the opening blast-off (a tip of the hat to Jerry Korb for realizing this)
- MkII 3 violins throughout
- Pitch-bended vibes on "Floating"
- 1/2-speed brass, flute, and strings on "Beyond"
- Flute on "Eyes Of A Child" and "Gypsy"
- M300B strings on "Watching And Waiting"
Some will probably argue, "Well, Celluloid's Neptune was 100% Mellotron and Edgar Froese's Ypsilon In Malaysian Pale is mostly Mellotron. I have both, however, IMHO I can't sit down and listen to and enjoy (key word here) either without thinking, "Jeez, where is this going to be over?", whereas I can replay TOCCC and not get the least bit tired of it.
B) The passage that really still gives me goosebumps is the middle instrumental section of Yes' "And You And I" from Close To The Edge (..."for reasons to...call..." with the tron crescendo, tron/MiniMoog riff, and the full band kicking in.

Most definitely TOCCC. I also enjoy listening to any of the live
Moodies recordings, no matter what the quality. It's interesting to
hear how Pinder modifies his Tron parts for live performance.

I also like the sound of the Tron in the Strawbs' recordings "Grave
New World" and "Bursting At The Seams".

The Mellotron part in Steve Miller's "In My First Mind" on
the "Children Of The Future" album also comes to mind.

Then there's "Heart Of The Sunrise" on Yes' Fragile album and
"The Devil's Triangle" on King Crimson's "In The Wake Of Poseidon".

I also really like Fritz's Tron recordings on "The Feeling Of Far".
It's very up close and shows just how good a finely tuned Mellotron
can sound without being drenched in reverb (not that I don't also
enjoy that sound).

BTW, there's an interesting article about MM&W in the latest Keyboard
magazine. No mention of Trons though.

I have a copy, too. Bought it in the 70's after a
Denver FM DJ kept pounding "Still" into the local
radiowaves. I guess it made some sort of impression
on me. Lost the impression when I heard the rest of
the album. If I recall, Sinfield's voice was a bit
like William Shatner on Vicodin.

Maybe someone could add 'tron to it and improve
it.....naaah, who could endure the process?!

This topic is one of my favorite things to read about on this (and the old group)…

As a new owner of an M400, soon to be restored at the good Professor’s Ranch, I am looking forward to playing some of my favorite ‘Tron passages and songs such as…

  1. the 8 Voice choir entrance on Dancing With the Moonlit Knight (SEBTP Genesis)/I still get chills after 35 years of listening
  2. Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats (The Lamb Lies Down also Genesis)/More chills
  3. the instrumental passage at the end of Entangled (Trick of the Tail; of course, Genesis)/Again- chills
  4. all tracks from the Strawbs Hero and Heroine especially Hero’s Theme
  5. Gates of Delirium/Soon (Yes’ Relayer)
  6. almost any Spock’s Beard track w/Mellotron on it is a classic in my book/ Go the Way You Go- a most majestic theme- the end of Thoughts is also superb; what about the middle section of Harm’s Way?
  7. The Engulfed Cathedral- Isao Tomita (no one ever discusses the glorious ‘Trons on his early recordings; why?)
  8. Three Friends, Gentle Giant/ An amazing chord sequence!

Regards,

Jim Parthun

I have always loved " Lost in a Lost World "from Seventh Sojourn and the
tron arrangement to the acoustic section of "The Question" on a Question
of Balance. The chamberlin oboe and panning strings on "Lost" really do it
for me! Beyond that just about any King Crimson song with mellotron.
I like the 3violins and Hackett solo section on "Firth of Fifth" from
"Selling England by the Pound" alot.

Mine would be 'My Song' by Mike Pinder on the Moodies EGBDF album;love the way his tron arrangement underscores the dramatics of the song!

That and bits from Earth and Fire's 'Song Of The Marching Children' suite.I believe most of it's done with an M300,the sounds of which I don't have in my Tron yet,but great to play anyway

Re: Your favorite Mellotron song...?

2008-03-23 by Bruce Daily

Hi all-

I have a few favorites.

The end of "Catherine Howard" on Wakeman's "Six Wives
of Hank the 8th". Great transition from strings to
flute.

"My Song" on the Moodies' EGBDF.

"Out & In" on the Moodies' TOCCC.

"Epitaph" on "In the Court of the Crimson King"

"Criminal" by Fiona Apple. I have a copy of a live
performance she made in a local radio station.
Whereas the studio recording used Chamby flutes at the
end of the song, the live recording ended up with
Chamby choir voices. Really a bit eerie. Loved both
recordings.

Your LEAST favorite Mellotron song...?

2008-03-23 by Mike Dickson

I have two.

1. 'Changes' by Black Sabbath. Not only in the Mellotron wobbling all
over the place, it's about 1/4 second of time, as thought player was
falling asleep. The 'rumpty-tum' flourish on the piano makes me laugh,
however. A lot.

2. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' by Johnny Cash with Fiona Apple.
Mellotron (or samples) are played bone dry, out of tune and (worst of
all) are accompanied by Ms Apple clearly trying to make up harmonies on
the spot with results that could charitably be described as catastrophic.

No doubt my positive disposition and sunny nature will be able to think
up some more.

"Free Bird" by Lynard Skynard. The Tron strings are extremely out of
tune. So is the singing.

As regards songs containing Mellotron that got me hooked on the
instrument in the first place, there was a bunch of (mainly) sixties
pop singles that did it for me at a very young age, long before I knew
what it was creating 'those weird sounds', and longer still before I
discovered that it was the same instrument responsible for all of them...

As well as the usual suspects 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Nights in White
Satin', these were the other tracks from that period that really stood
out for me:

Traffic - 'Hole In My Shoe'

Manfred Mann - 'Semi Detached, Suburban Mr. James' and 'Ha Ha Said The
Clown'

Rolling Stones - 'We Love You' and '2000 Light Years From Home'

Flowerpot Men - 'Let's Go To San Francisco' (not keen on the song but
it had 'that sound' again so at the time that was good enough for me)

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity - 'This Wheel's On Fire'

The Kinks - 'Autumn Almanac' and 'Days'

David Bowie - 'Space Oddity'

Simon Dupree and The Big Sound - 'Kites'

Alice Cooper - 'Hello Hooray'

At the time I thought there was 'tron (or Chamberlin) on The Box Tops'
'The Letter' as well, but to this day I'm still not entirely sure if
it is or not.

> B.) What is your favorite Mellotron riff.the one you just had to learn
> how to play - or , would love to play?

At first it was all the usual 'tron riffs which have now
unfortunately gained 'cliché' status ('Strawberry Fields..' and
'Watcher..' etc) - admittedly I do still indulge those from time to
time - along with various other Moodies / King Crimson / Yes / Bowie /
Roxy Music / Sparks / other early Genesis...

Now, when I'm not trying to make up songs of my own, it's largely
songs featuring 'tron by Kevin Ayers, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull,
Caravan, Hawkwind, The Cardiacs, Matching Mole, Fairfield Parlour,
'S.F. Sorrow'-era Pretty Things and 'Odessey and Oracle'-period Zombies.

Oh yes, and not forgetting some of the tracks from George Harrison's
"Wonderwall" soundtrack, and the Mellotron outings by the Small Faces
during their 'Immediate label' years.

"The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society" has some
interesting Mellotron moments on it as well.

I've never tried 'Free Bird' though, and I don't have the inclination
to start!

There's a bunch of Oasis numbers from when they got really bloated and
pompous, third album onwards I think, any of them would do, "Don't
look back in Anger" probably the worst, though "wonderwall" is pretty
dreadful too.

A bunch of unmemorable neo-progressive bands who combine sappy
sub-elton john "songwriting" (IE nowhere near as good as Elton
himself, who could write a catchy tune) with terribly unimaginative
use of mellotron as a "progressive" stylistic signifier (the thing
isn't a substitute organ, dumbass, it's an impact instrument! Use
sparingly). Spock's Beard probably the apotheosis of this, especially
their earlier stuff where they were a bit plagiaristic in the
songwriting/arrangement stakes to boot. I used to play in a covers
band where the drummer and the singer were big SB fans, no laffs to be
had there for sure.

Hmmm. That Mellotron film. There have always been a few things that have bothered me about it.

1. Eric Robinson being introduced as a 'personality'. Nothing else. Just a personality. That sounds so non-corporeal it's quite frightening. I half expect to find him as nothing more than a brain in jar. Like something out of a ropey Dr Who episode from the 1960s. Maybe he was.

2. David Nixon's sense of musical timing. Not to mention his choice of tunes. Oh. And the decor of his house. I could also say that the Mellotron he is playing has some shoddily adjusted tapes but that would just be picky of me.

3. That grin that Geoff Unwin gives at the end of his little speed-up, slow-down, speed-up again demo. Sort of like the apologetic grin one gives when one has broken particularly massive and messy wind in front of your fiance's mother. Whilst on Ketamine. In a white suit.

But best of all

4. That split second shot of a girl sitting on a massive cock at the end.

Badge isn't a bad song, almost an anthem for people of
a certain age, ok the tron part isn't spectacular but
not many rock classics use mellotron mandolins. I have
to confess that for years I thought they were some
weird strings.

Badge isn't a bad song, almost an anthem for people of
a certain age, ok the tron part isn't spectacular but
not many rock classics use mellotron mandolins. I have
to confess that for years I thought they were some
weird strings.

Mine would be The Beatles' 'Flying',very unimaginative, apart from the outro.

Also Mike Pinder's 'Island To Island' with it's lyrical reference to 'playing tropical Mellotron'.But let's not start about lyrics again : )

You've touched his 'tron? Where and when did this happen?

As for the smatterings of Mellotron in Autumn Almanac, first of all on
the choruses between the 'la-la-la's and 'Oh, my poor rheumatic back /
my autumn almanac / my autumn armagnac' etc, there's MkII brass (I'm
sure of that - the bit that sort of goes 'de-diddly-um'), and then
definitely trombone in the section starting from "I go to Blackpool
for my holidays" up to "..'cause all the people I meet". And then more
combined brass again at the end avec 'spot-the-key-clicks'!

I have a selection of new, original equipment ears. I have stockpiled them for a number of years. Sadly, I am out of eardrums and other ear parts. There was a run on them a few years ago. It was from buyers predominantly in their 40s and 50s. Go figure.
At any rate, replacement ears are $250.00 the set. Paypal only. I have only a few sets left so first come, first served. Please email me before ordering.

I second 2000 light years... I love when a band that is not known for keyboards makes the top of the tron list... Such a big middle finger to the neo prog bands that can actually use 2 (not 1) fingers at a time...

(so my list includes cool people who can use 2 fingers at a time... and who drink good beers... and who happen to have great musicians surrounding the 2 finger keyboard parts...)

And You and I... hands down my fav

Heart of the Sunrise... hands down my fav

All tron parts from Tales... hands down my fav

Hero and Heroine... hands down my fav

Watcher... hands down my fav

Witches Promise... The "true" sound (runner up - CrossEyed Mary... the reason being... why?)

Worlds Away... only on vinyl

Fountains of Salmacis... crappy speakers on 10 that distort after 2 rules!!!
