Popping sound

Popping sound

2018-05-05 by fazeka@gmail.com

Hi all,

Long time owner, haven't played my 'tron in about 7 years or so. I had it gone through about a year before that (new PS caps, new capstan bearings, new rollers, new belt, new Streetly tapes/frame, new Streetly heads, etc.). It had its motor control board changed sometime in the 90s.

Fired it up tonight and I noticed some popping/clicking sounds in the audio... anyone experience that before? I have to go through the keyboard and adjust the action and all but this popping/clicking is a new one on me.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Chris

Is it happening in the same pattern on the same keys every time, or is it more random?

Seemed more random. Thru the headphone jack.

But yesterday I played through the output jack on the back into an amp and noticed no pops in the sound throughout, so that was nice. The only other problem I had is that the output would slowly go soft and then die out completely. Then after rotating the volume knob a few times, I got the sound back. This happened a few more times. On the last time it happened, no rotating of the volume (or tone) pots alleviated this but I kept playing and eventually it came back.

I have more questions about my mellotron but I will post them in another thread to the group. I can say it was nice playing her again after all these years!

This is an M400?  What headphone jack is that?  Mine doesn't have one.  You should plug into an amp through the output jack and see if you hear it there.  This would go a long way to isolating the trouble.

Yes, M400.

Sorry, maybe I should have said "output" jack? I guess now I realized this is really line level... so not exactly meant for headphones... did I manage to damage my 'tron?
