Anybody seen this one?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Anybody seen this one?

I think it is a very good demo, very coherent and more technical that just about anything that I have seen that is current. No hyperbole and completely accurate.

I know her, she is my synth tech, and has worked on some very expensive and and difficult pieces, I never thought that I would trust a synth to a girl a little over 20 years old. She is brilliant and we are lucky to have her in our locale. That's not my Mellotron but I do have one up on Reverb at DiPintos.

Hi all-

It's refreshing that she recognized some of the shortcomings of the CM-10 and did improvements, along with replacement of aged components (can CM-10s be rescued this way?). The machine sounded stable under the load of several keys. I wonder if the absolute pitch stability is now better over time.
The headblock cable looks like it was shortened and re-attatched to the plug. A good thing, as it fixes "cable rot", but in the long run doesn't solve the problem.
I feel she has done her homework on the M400, and recognizes what maintenance mainly needs to be done. Nice.

Just saw this as a

have a good knowledge of the instrument, but would be

She began doing videos at the request of Reverb.com.  They apparently watch their vendors and ask certain of them to provide additional content.

Most interesting, indeed! Even finding ground loop problems in the circuitry - she obviously knows her electronics, (Mellotron's or not!) & seems she did good work on this machine.

What baffled ME is how FILTHY this poor thing is! Looks like someone left it out in the rain for years or something! I did recall Frank's story of rats having lived in one he'd had in for rebuilding. (Am I right on that, Frank?) Man, just cleaning this one (#1344 from what I could see, etched on the keyboard frame) would take 3 times longer than all her electronic and other work!

Thanks for passing this on. Pretty cool. Some of the comments behind it: pretty stupid. Anyway...

HAPPY NEW YEAR, everyone! I hope you all in the east will be thawing out soon. It's been brutal, hasn't it?

Cheers,
Berington

Hi Berington,

I think I recall the Mellotron that Frank did years ago that had the mouse/rat poop in it.  Wasn't it the "blue" Mellotron?

I’m always interested as to what qualifies it as a “restoration,” especially to those first attempting one. Getting one to play does not mean one has gotten it to play properly. To me a proper restoration includes making it play to the best that its design allows. There are subtle differences from machine to machine. Beyond a cabinet restoration and even the electronics lies the heart and soul of the instrument... the keyboard and its relationship to the headblock and the heads themselves. There is a science to it. It took me a while to learn and understand it. But without that understanding and the proper application of that understanding, one will never realize true potential of the machine. There is a reason I no longer work on them. The human ear. I am going deaf and I am losing my ability to discern the nuances that once allowed me to get the most from them. I once hoped to train a younger friend but that seems less likely with the passage of time and the commitments I have now.

I’m not sure if this is a restoration or just a video of a company that figured out how to get one to play. Having an understanding of how it works and knowing the secrets within it and how to get the most out of it are two entirely different things.

Just my thoughts,

Frank

Frank, she is the tech that I asked your permission for her to contact you if she got into trouble. It turns out her client had such restrictions about what she could or could not do that she could not call on you, her brief was restore original parts, no buying parts or major assembly rebuilds. Too bad, your faith in life would be restored talking to such a bright committed person born just before 2000.

That’s cool. Why would a client place such restrictions? And with those restrictions, I would think input from a more experienced tech would be invaluable. Besides, how would her client ever know?

Hi Frank, Gino, et al,

Yes, it's too bad she had such restrictions placed on her that she wasn't even "permitted" to solicit outside expert opinions or do anything beyond replacing caps or whatever. It's almost a surprise they'd allow her to find new replacement components, as opposed to "vintage" resistors & caps from some out-of-the-way electronics house that still has old stock. Too bad they "clipped the wings" of someone apparently so qualified and promising.

For an actual "restoration," I think I'd have begun with emptying the cabinet completely and taking a fire hose to it! Apparently the current owner wants it to look "aged," or even older than it actually is. They probably also love the all-too-common "relic'd" guitars, 2017-ish instruments finished by their manufacturers to look like their '50s or '60s originals. For the most part, to me they too often look more like the poor things had a fight with a lawnmower... and lost! Never got that whole thing. I appreciate "well-loved," but from natural wear by someone who's at least taken care of their instrument. Aside from Alison's internal work, this poor Mellotron looks like a flood victim!

Anyway, yes, too bad this conscientious tech had so many limitations. It would've been exciting to see what she'd done had she been allowed.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, everyone!

Cheers!

She is working on a Micro Leslie.

Also for me: She is doing routine service on my Synthi AKS

I want a Dual Oddy Avatar setup with a pair of Arp 1601 clones, the whole thing fully syncable and quanrtizable.

She is Modding one of my two Arp Avatars. I got one fixed up pretty well and I got another and asked her to match and supercede the reference unit. Taking a badly broken Avatar, adding patch points, speeding up the EG and VCA,  fixing the glide fault, Adding an oscillator, putting in a dual filter toggle one side standard ladder ala Arp and the other is a hand etched Yusynth Diode filter with the caveat that I am a little freaky about the EFM VCF 8 (it was the best of Tom's circuit cores.). A voltage processor will be added too.

I think that you guys will get why I am going on and on about this child and her guy. They are extraordinary.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Anybody seen this one?

2018-01-25 by Frank Stickle

Gino, if you are referencing me here, I need to set the record straight. I am a curious bystander. I my previous post is not a critique, but more of an observation. I never considered myself other than someone who wanted to learn to do something the best I could. I don’t have broad knowledge. I do spend a lot of time thinking and asking questions. Before this stuff I worked on vintage motorcycles. I liked restoring them. I started young and got better as I went along. I always have liked sharing what I learned. Early on with Mellotrons I used to bug the crap out of Martin and John. I once remember tracking John Bradley down at two in the morning years ago. He was working on his boat but he took my call and answered my questions. After a period of time I started to ask myself the questions that led to experimentation, discoveries and enlightenment.

Today I completed an electric, lighted, rotating, floating headpiece to be worn by a runway model in a show. Someone came into my shop who had heard that I can fabricate. I agreed to take on the project, thought about it for two days and built it in six hours. My customer cried when she saw it.

I don’t think I could ever do the kind of work these folks could do on your synths. Beyond my scope. I think of myself as sort of an idiot savant. Some things I learn to do well. At most others I might be a total fuck up.

Why would anyone in this group want to read all the recent crap?  I check this group about once per year.  Boring!   If you guys want to have a little chit-chat about nothing, send email to each other.

Before I unsubscibe I just want say that these chit chat fellows actually put some skin in the game. Drive machines hundreds of miles so touring bands can use them for free, Give tech support on their own dime, give people parts and supplies, buy new machines and share them, encourage and help young techs. Since there is a new US president, one of us gets racial insults of every type and stripe in their in-box. from impatient snarkiness to outright racial epithets, regularly. The negativism is tiring.

Incivilty is boorish.  Please excuse my uncheerful exit fron this group.

Gino,

You are my friend, my good friend. Part of friendship is trust. We share many things yet we also are divergent in some of our opinions. Good friends celebrate the things they have in common and respect their individual differences. On more than one occasion I have wished we lived close by. That would be fun and interesting.

Pr'haps only me now.  This is the second time I've seen the/a mellotron group self destruct this way.  And like the explosion in the previous mellotron group, I have completely missed the original provocation.  It must have been really bad.

I'm still here.

A lot of what we say about Mellotrons has already been discussed on this site in years past, and over and over again.

So that's why there's almost no traffic.

Regarding the recent 'banter', I've seen this time and time again.

Nothing new.  I always forgive everyone, unless there is reason to believe it's malicious.

Usually we're a pretty good group.

I'm still here as well.   I am with Chris, really - what has to be said has been said a lot before.

It started with mailing lists, then moved to Yahoo groups, then on to web forums, then on to social media.  There will be other places to move onto, I suppose, but the more fragmented things get the less chance there is of tracking where anything is or what anyone is saying.  The proliferation of social media opportunities has (I think) made it harder instead of easier.

Every time a post comes up here I sort of hope it's interesting, but it seldom is.

As for Clay, he set this group up as an act of kindness when the last one imploded.  I'll always be grateful for that.

Hi all,

It’ll probably blow over, as always. Indeed it’s been awfully quiet on this group the past year. Thanks to this subject, there almost have been more message in jan 2018 than in all of 2017. :)

I don’t see much tron discussion anywhere, really. Mellotron.com has a booth at NAMM, any news about that? Streetly seem to be very busy too.

I agree, Chris. While the topic often strays a bit, to synths and even other instruments, it's still about music - in particular, the type of music we all seem to appreciate most: those groups or players who love & use Mellotrons. I don't understand incivility, either, when it happens. There's no excuse or call for it... & I've seen no reason for it in this particular thread. Gino wanted to highlight an extremely talented, creative, professional technician who happens to be younger and female. For me that's a plus! There's the age-old story of not enough girls getting into science classes, etc. Happily that's changing - it NEEDS to - and girls like Alison are the happy result.

Gino, thanks for posting the video of her and her Mellotron work, and now writing on all the synth work she's doing for you. Wow! Way beyond MY scope, as well. It's a great highlight on great talent. MY particular criticisms have ONLY been of her client, the Mellotron's owner, the sad condition of the instrument and the fact that they apparently kept her from doing what she could & would have to make it an outstanding machine! Must've been frustrating!

That all said, especially with the limits placed on particular parties, I hope NO ONE quits this group... it's been really enjoyable, often educational, to follow along & read all of your very worthy comments and stories. Thanks for them all!

Cheers to everyone.
Berington

I don't own a Mellotron , can't play a darn thing, probably don't have a reason to be here, except I've loved the sound since I first heard it back in 1968.
Maybe someday I'll be able to place my fingertips on one just to hear the magic.
So,  it really is a privilege and opportunity to come here and listen to you folks discuss the instrument - and I hope no one leaves.

Hey all -
I've been on the lists since pre-Yahoo. I'll stick with it. It's been quiet for so long, but what the heck....We've got a great eclectic group of enthusiasts. I think you're all pretty interesting. Chris and Frank and Gino and Fritz and Mike and John and Ben and Berington and ...... Myself? Not so much. But I like reading all the posts, no matter how scarce.
Ben and all - Indeed Markus has a booth at NAMM. The digital machines are there, but no Mark IV's - just a an M400 and a Mark II.....Wait!! Did you say Mark II?!? Yep. Looks like Markus acquired s.n. 149 and has been able to get the right hand operational. And since Markus knows me from THIS group, I was able to spend about 20 minutes playing and cycling the banks and tossing a few 'Legend of a Mind' pitch sweeps. I hadn't played a Mark II since Dave Kean was still in North Hollywood! It was fun chatting with the curious on-lookers and answering questions.

Great story about the Mk 2, Vance. (Pics or it didn't happen.) Anything known about the heritage of #149?

Found a Youtube video showing it (amongst other stuff at Markus’ booth): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35mTntGAGd8

The Mark II in Markus' booth is s.n. 149 and was acquired from a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers (who had acquired it from he-who-shall-not-be-named)

There will be other places to move onto, I suppose, but the more fragmented things get the less chance there is of tracking where anything is or what anyone is saying. The proliferation of social media opportunities has (I think) made it harder instead of easier..

Every time a post comes up here I sort of hope it's interesting, but it seldom is.

As for Clay, he set this group up as an act of kindness when the last one imploded. I'll always be grateful for that.

A lot of what we say about Mellotrons has already been discussed on this site in years past, and over and over again.

So that's why there's almost no traffic..

Regarding the recent 'banter', I've seen this time and time again...

Nothing new. I always forgive everyone, unless there is reason to believe it's malicious.

Usually we're a pretty good group.

Pr'haps only me now. This is the second time I've seen the/a mellotron group self destruct this way. And like the explosion in the previous mellotron group, I have completely missed the original provocation... It must have been really bad.

Clay's comment is exactly why I unfriended him on Facebook. I'm out of here too. You all know where to find me for civil meaningful chit chat.

(Resending, seems it didn’t come through.)

Thanks, Berington, for putting that so eloquently. I’m going to rip that of and put it in the group’s description. :)

Berington
