3d printed M400 power cap

3d printed M400 power cap

2017-07-23 by Ben Stuyts

Hi,

I have found this really nice transparant red filament for my 3D printer, so I thought I’d have a go at printing a cap for my M400’s power switch.

Problem is obviously that I do not have the original cap. I’d greatly appreciate it if somebody could supply me with some close-up photo’s and/or dimensions.

Best regards,
Ben

Hi,

I have had the same idea, but never got around to buying the printer yet. I will dig around for the pieces of mine that I think I saved for the exact purpose. Will forward info if I find something. In any case, please add me to the list. Rather than bust fingers turning on the switch I put it on a remote wall switch, but it would be nice to fix that issue. Thanks Ben

John

Hi John,

Any info is appreciated, thanks! I did a quick test print, and it looks like it might work. :) See attached photo.

If yours is broken, I’d be interested to have a photo of the inside. I have no idea how it actually was fixed on the switch. I see a little vertical slit, and then there’s sort of a round snap ring.

Ben

Ben, the red lens cap screws onto the threads on the the switch.  If I can find mine (put it away for safe keeping), I can at least give you exterior dimensions.

The red lense in the photo looks pretty close to me.

I have just received some great close-up pictures from the outside (thanks, David!). But the inside is still a bit of a mystery to me.

Thanks,

Dear All,

Inside is a pair of L shaped slots that mate up with the switch so when you put the cap on you rotate it until there is a click when it locates...

Cheers,

I think it actually snaps over an expansion ring that fits in a recess below the threads.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] 3d printed M400 power cap

2017-07-28 by Bruce Daily

Hi all-

Okay, I popped my cap off #1221, and here are some measurements & pix attatched. Pay attention tronsters, because I'm not doing this again. Being very myopic helps with the measurements.
Height is 13mm.
OD is 13mm.
Lower flange diameter is 16mm, and is 1.5mm high.
ID is a tight 11mm.
Inner depth is 12mm.
There are 4 x 2mm ribs running down from the inner cap top. 3 run for only 5mm, one runs 8mm. The longer rib fits the keyway on the switch proper, engaging the rotational switch mechanism. The tension ring is just that, supplying outward tension against the inner wall of the cap, keeping it in stasis. The other ribs limit the downward mounting depth to the top of the switch proper.

Don't forget that there are 4 x 1mm wide ribs running vertical on the outside, 0.75mm thick and equally spaced. Helps with the grip. AND, there is an inner bullseye pattern at the top to diffuse the light.

The 2 pix show the cap underside (note the 2 different lengths of the inner ribs). The other is the switch proper (note the keyway and tension ring).

Dammit, now there's a tiny crack in the cap. Oh, well. Hope this helps.

-Bruce Daily

Wow Bruce, that’s really some comprehensive information, thanks!!

So sorry about the crack. If this works out I’ll send you a couple of spare caps. :)

Kind regards,
Ben

Attached a few screen shots based on the information Bruce gave. Am I on the right track with this?

Kind regards,
Ben

Hi all,

Seems good but I think the "4 x 1mm wide ribs running vertical on the outside, 0.75mm thick and equally spaced. Helps with the grip" should go a bit higher.
Less than a mm, I would say 0,2/0,4 mm.

Good luck

David

Re: [newmellotrongroup] 3d printed M400 power cap

2017-07-28 by Bruce Daily

Hi Ben-

Your draft looks pretty darn good!  I agree with David, the outer ribs run all the way from the bottom flange to just below the top edge.  The sides & tops of the ribs are rounded, if possible.

The crack I noticed was isolated to the middle of the cover body, across the area where the tension ring locates, and may have been there already. Thanks for the offer of a cap, though!

The description of the cap Mr. Leete describes would be a "bayonet" mount (similar to BNC connectors and many automotive light applications). This makes me wonder if there were production variations in the switch/cap combo, and might be worth researching.

It is amazing your printer is capable of reproducing something this small with accuracy. I look forward to the results.

Please read "less than 1mm from top
of the cap", just to be clear!

Hi again Ben-

Looks like you already had the "rounding" dialed in on those outer ribs, my mistake. Height was the only issue.

Hi Bruce,

Yeah, the rounding was already there. I changed the length so the outer ribs end closer to the end.

I made a new test print, and found out I need to do some more work on it. The longer inner rib doesn’t fit well in the keyway. I’ll send some pics in a separate mail. And I think the inner diameter should be a few tenth smaller to get a snug fit.

By the way, this is on a relatively cheap $180 3D printer, so nothing fancy at all. A "Fabrikator Mini V2” from Hobbyking. I bought it to see what I could do with it, learn some new skills perhaps, and found out it is quite addictive. Resolution (vertical) was set to the highest setting which is 0.1 mm. It takes around 40 minutes to print.

Kind regards,
Ben

Here are some pics. The ones on the Tron look a bit purple, but in real life it looks much more reddish/orange from the neon bulb.

I appreciate all your comments!

Kind regards,
Ben
