OT - Wattson efy-6 fuzz

Hi Bernie,

I tried to send you this link directly, but it seems that you no longer have the email
address that I used for you around 4 years ago.

One of the reasons I am considering this pedal is because the knobs are all on
the front. Do you think I'll be "ok" with this as opposed to the Wattson FY-6, or should I stay with your recommendation ?

Also, would you or anyone else care to recommend a current boutique Compressor / Sustainer pedal that is way better than the Boss CS-3 (recent vintage) that I already
have.

With your permission Bernie. Depending on what you are doing compressors vary. If you want a noticeable compression to amp up your lead guitar sound and do the normal stuff, you could look at a Pigtronix Philosophers Tone. It is not the most subtle and true but its workmanlike for the guitar and one of the few circuits that are not copies of the MXR or Ross, If you go boutique there are builders that make great stuff but before you go there you should become a n FX Anorak, Otaku, Nerd. I don't use compressors much myself.

If you need a compressor for recording get an FMR RNC compressor or a Neve Portico or anything Fritz Doddy tells you to.

Re the Watson

I don't use any fuzz that scoops mids cause I'll want to put them back. If they are copying the Shin -E unit Aka Duo Fuzz or Super fuzz, those are classics. They only ever worked for me at volume when I could back off the ambienrt mics. It's all taste.

The best guitar pre - od in my opinion is the Super Gainiac made by Milos Popvic in Serbia at MP Custom FX. I cascade parallel or inverse switch my germanium od - pre with my silicon unit often, I now use a Germaniac by MP. I also have an extended hybrid transistor-diode, optical and diode selectable, octave, boost and sustain unit called Grunfiac. It is all boutique btw.

I don't use compressors, so I can't give you a recommendation. But if I did, I would follow Gino's recommendations.

Thanks for your suggestions, Gino. I will look into all of them.

A little over a year ago, I purchased a Black Cat OD-Boost because I did not have an overdrive pedal and thought I would add one to the board. I was surprised on how much I liked it; may because of the Boost.

When the subject came up about Fuzz pedals, it got me thinking because all I have is a EH Big Muff, and thought maybe there is something a lot better available. To tell you the truth, I don't have a problem with it, but as everybody admits, it's all a matter of taste.

I agree about the Philosopher's Tone. Right now I've got mine set pretty extreme, and I use an Orange Squeezer (from Build YourOwn Clone) for subtler stuff.

It's fine to experiment with your compressor placement; there's no hard rule as to what should go where in a signal chain. The "conventional wisdom" though, IF you're at all concerned with noise, is that anything in the chain before the compressor that creates "system noise" or anything else (Heaven help you if it's a distortion or overdrive!), will be exacerbated greatly and uncontrollably when it hits the compressor. IF that's effect you want, absolutely go for it, but it may also be a good way to empty a club or cost you a session! Just sayin'... (-:

That is true. Never do what I do if you expect to get paid. My last known use of a comressor outside of the house was in a loop by itself with a Gizmotron.

IF that's effect you want, absolutely go for it, but it may also be a good way to empty a club or cost you a session! Just sayin'... (-:

I really don't understand the need for compressors in general. Other bass players have told me that a compressor is a must have for bass guitars, but I've never used one for bass because they seem to be nothing more than tools to cover up sloppy technique. I've tried compressors on my Mellotron and the only thing they do is introduce noise into the signal path. I think there must be a use for them simply because they exist in the professional recording world, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why.

I use a lot of compression on my Rickenbacker 370/12. Gives it that extra "Byrds" sound.

Bernie, I'd be happy to show you how I use compressors..someday:)

They are an essential tool for me! Could not do what I do without them. That being said , I have never compressed a tron. No need to, unless you using it for effect. I love what compressors do for individual tracks and full mixes. I have 2 compressors just for bass.

After compressors, EQ is my next favorite tool. Only when I have EQ and compression solved for a track do I think about artificial ambience and fx.
