What sounds should I pick?

What sounds should I pick?

2015-11-05 by thomasooo2003

Hello fellow Mellotronists,

I'm thinking about replacing my old tapes on one frame (3 violins, 8 choir and church organ), 'cause the tapes  have been used a lot and I have sometimes even trouble with sticky tapes (that won't come back after releasing the key...). OK, I'am not only thinking about to do so, I am pretty sure :-)

The idea is to get new tapes from Martin in England, but I'am not sure which I should pick: the pitch-correctes 3 violins (as "the" ultimative Mellotron sound) or something different like solo violin, or one of the M300-strings?

The choir should be the original, but instead of the church organ I thought about a brass sound. Which one would you suggest?

I have carefully listened to the sound examples on the website, but some sounded dated and very short, some are not very "neutral" — a short melody line is very different to some block chords, for example. Has someone recorded, lets say, solo violin, M300 strings or some of the different brass sounds and uploaded it on youtube or sound cloud? Long notes would be fine to get an idea how it may work in different musical situations... That may help me to make a decision!

Thanks for any help & suggestions,

Thomas

Aren't those sounds all playable on Martins web site?

The reason for the samples being short is that we didn't want anyone sampling from them, and that block chords don;t always represent the sound fairly.  Some could be re-recorded, I know.

Re: What sounds should I pick?

What kind of music do you like? Are you looking for sounds that you've heard in classic Mellotron music or something completely different? Remember that not all Trons sound alike, so any sample recording you hear may not sound exactly like it will on your Tron.

You can listen to the Memotron example of 24 of the sounds that are available from Streetly, bearing in mind that they were recorded from the output of a perfectly maintained Tron.

http://www.manikin-electronic.com/mp3/memotron/50_Demosong.mp3

These sounds are in the order found starting on page 17 of this document:

http://www.manikin-electronic.com/pdf/memotron_anniversary_webbooklet.pdf

There are also Streetly samples on the GForce M-Tron Pro website from the same Tron:

No matter which sounds you choose, I recommend the tuned tapes. I was against them in the beginning, but since I've owned about 40 of them over the last several years, I wouldn't have them any other way.

By the way, what kind of condition is your Tron in? Sticky tapes could also be due to keyboard adjustment. I would start there before taking a chance on ruining a new set of tapes.

Thank you Bernie and all others,

to Mike: thanks for your musical examples. I agree with your opinion, that 8 second samples would be a nice source for DIY-samples :-)) On the other hand, some examples sound very rough and ”gritty", but not only the original sounds from the 50's and 60's but also the new sounds — some of them...

to Bernie: like most of the people here (not all, I know) I prefer to listen to Prog of all kind, and so love all the classic Mellotron sound (BTW, I also like early music, Renaissance and contemporary classical stuff, and modern jazz and diverse other genres, but Prog is still very important).

In the moment I record and perform music as a background and intro- and outro themes for performances of stories by E.A.Poe — in combination with a guitar player who use a Roland GR-20 guitar synth. So there is a broad variety of digital sounds, and i add Mellotron, analogue synth, Theremin and Flute. The idea is to use sounds that have the characteristic edge of the Mellotron; too clean and perfect would not be a good idea.

So for example I like the 8 choir and the Birotron choir, but the Russian is bit too perfect...

I'll listen to your recommended samples and hope to make a decision soon :-)

Yes, and the M400 itself might be not in absolut perfect condition, but very trusty for live situations (i have the upgrade motor controller card from Markus Resch). I'll guess, some of the pinch rollers may be a bit stiff. So some replacement pinch rollers (or all of them) would be a good idea (but not really cheap, I'll guess).

As I a have two sets of tape I can compare the condition: the newer one with flute-strings-cello is in a much better condition then the one I will replace. OK, maybe some springs might also not like new...

Greetings,
Thomas

I thnk I have
Ian Macdonald flute
MK2 strings
Mixed choir

Sort of a mixtrue of old and new things

There are new string sounds that are wonderful that I found via the M3000 app add on sounds, different and very useful. The Claire Lindley sounds are very nice and I am going to use some in my new M4000 when it is ready, probably a couple of stations with her and M300 string sounds. for a variety of mood textures and feel.  These newer sounds are extending the reach and sensitivity of the instrument in a way that was as possible in the past.
