King Crimson

King Crimson

2015-09-02 by Andy Kinch

Went to see the band do a warm up gig for the world tour at Friars Aylesbury last night. They appear to be using the Nord Mellotron library to good effect. There was quite a bit of early material played including Starless, Epitaph, 21st CSM and ITCOTCK.
I have to say that in a live situation, the Nord stood its ground pretty well. There's a quite a decent EQ on the instrument as well as some pretty good amp and effect simulations, enough to fool most people I would think. And during those early songs it was well up in the mix, and I'm pretty certain it created enough of a 1969 vibe to send the audience home on a significant high.

Hi Andy

They were using the M3000 iPad app and also have two Memotron racks!

Must have been using the Nord as a master controller. It was certainly being played for the major Tron parts. In fact one of the 3 drummers played these parts. How talented is he? :)

RE: [newmellotrongroup] King Crimson

2015-09-03 by John Hammaren

One method and the one I use is to buy the Apple Lightning to USB camera adapter that I plug into an external hub, along with a MIDI keyboard plugged into that. The reason for the external hub is strictly power in this case. The problem with this method and one that many attest to is that when the adapter is plugged in, the IPad battery is not charging, and even with the keyboard off, and hub powered down I find the IPad will not go into normal sleep mode, and will discharge. So, when done playing I try to remember to get it on the charger. Software wise, I use Audiobus as the MIDI routing tool in the IPad. It appears more complicated than it actually is, but the whole power thing is clunky. The other complaint is that the screen will turn off as a power saving measure when you play. I think there is a utility to fix that but so far I haven’t bothered.

John

You can hook up a compatible keyboard controller by USB.

This sounds abit like a "bleeding edge" solution. What is the benefit besides compactness? It seems the ipad has serious power issues. When i played live i used an M Audio usb keyboard and had all my vst synths controlled through a piece of software called Live (professor?) or something like that. There is a vst called "Redtron" which sounds fabulous. This setup had some issues but sleeping screens and power run-down wasn't one.

M3000

I don't own an iPad, the M-Tron Pro vst, or even a "Smart Phone".

Do the samples in the M3000 sound better or about the same as the mellotron samples in the Streetly Tapes - Vol 1 Expansion Pack for M-Tron Pro ?

Do the samples on the M3000 sound better or about the same as the mellotron samples in the 50th Anniversary Collection made for the Memotron ?

Firstly, I don't mean to cause a controversy. I understand the opinions could be subjective. I'm sure all of these products sound great and could be put to good use by a talented musician in the right situation.

Thanks,

Robert

I can only take some wild guesses. As far as I know, the Streetly collections for M-Tron Pro and the Memotron are the same, but in different formats. I think the M3000 samples are probably the same, but maybe half or quarter the sampling rate to make the files smaller. After all, it doesn't make much sense to sample the same Mellotron three times for three different applications when you can just manipulate the same samples.

All three sound much more authentic than the sterilised Scandanavian effort. And that is from people who have tried the digital quartet in on offer.

The Memotron is great for live use. I think the samples in mine (Vintage Collection) came from Klaus Hoffmann. But they aren't the same sounds as Manikin use in their demo mp3's to my ears (especially flute and brass).
