M4000D and M3000

M4000D and M3000

As I understand it the M3000 and M4000D play digital samples taken direct from the master tapes whereas M-tron and M-tron pro are digitally sampled mellotrons. 


How do you get the digital sample from the master tape? Do you just play it on a high quality reel to reel tape player?


I ask because having messed about with the M3000 and M-tron pro Streetly pack there is I think a distinct difference in the sound. I am not saying that one is better than the other but they do sound different.

The difference is that the MTron Pro Streetly Tapes are recordings made from our Skellotron replaying actual mellotron tapes so you get the eq lift from the pre amp/line amp. We would NEVER put out master tapes as they do not dound like a mellotron. The MTron Pro Streetly Tapes are much more authentic in sound than the erroneously named Scandanavian thing!

In fairness to Markus's M4000D, whilst the digital samples inside are from the raw master tapes, the signal then goes through an additional DSP stage, which on the current firmware lets you chose 'M400' or 'Chamberlin M1' preamp emulation, so you have some flexibility in tonal quality there (obviously this does not add additional wow and flutter and tape compression, though)

I thought Martin made himself quite clear. You don't mount the master because the master is not a Mellotron tape.

Sorry I am stupid. Imagine I have a mellotron tape, a works master whatever that is, I want to create a digital sample but I don't have a mellotron, how do I get the signal from the tape into a digital file?

Ok, so the raw output from the back of the skelotron is almost certainly one of the most pleasing Mellotrons on the planet, totally awesome from the little I've been privileged to hear. Are these recordings the same as on the Streetly Memotron collection? And will they be included on the new Memotron?

Seems to me like the way to get the most authentic digital mellotron experience is to play GForce MTron using the M4000D MIDI keyboard (which is a real wooden tron keyboard assembly, with polyphonic aftertouch)

 I suspect that mellotrons do or at least could have aftertouch in the sense of the sound being altered slightly by pressure on the keyboard after the tape starts to play. I have read of concert pianists talking about aftertouch on concert grand pianos although my chinese upright doesn't seem to have it.

On M-tron pro it would be really useful as one could introduce another sample, change tone color, panning,delay chorus etc. However my question was just curiosity as I don't have any keyboards with aftertouch.

There is something like aftertouch. My M400 had more of it than my M4000, until I replaced the felt strip under the keyboard with a chamois strip. Then it mostly disappeared. In any event, I don't take advantage of it because I can get a smoother and more predictable and useful result with a volume pedal. But I could see how it might be a neat effect on software like M-Tron Pro.

I've never actually used M-Tron Pro (I'm not a great one for softsynths), but reading the documentation on GForce's site, it does support aftertouch to modulate the filter and lots of Continuous controller messages to do other stuff. It woulf be trivial for GForce to add support for polyphonic aftertouch, so that anything you can do to the sound globally via aftertouch or cc's, you could do to varying individual amounts on individual keys with poly aftertouch. Sounds like they're missing a trick there.

But it's not generally pleasing to hear except during a somewhat fast solo on percussive type sounds.

It is not the click you hear in that video. It's more of a chirp/click. When you hit the keys hard it'll chirp/click electronically. Kinda like peeling out in a muscle car. I like it. Although, thinking about it, that might be a fun idea, miking up the actual plying of the tron.  I like the sound in the video. I've done that with electric bass. Record the sound of the electric bass electronically and acoustically. It adds a nice percussive element.

There is no keyclick on the M4000. This is because the screw over the pad is further forward which negates the slight displacement caused by the old position which resulted in the click. The pad used to push the tape fractionally caused that annoying noise! It can be reintroduced by returning the pad screw to the old position but this compromises the action and feel. So there.

Frank, you obviously did an AMAZING job setting up this puppy! Incredible, clean, fast action. Wish I had the means to send you my beloved 400 #1485 & just say "Have AT it, my friend!"  Maybe one day. WOW!  Pretty incredible PLAYING too, I should add!  I'm think I've seen this clip before, but it sure bears repeat watching!  It's funny, regarding the key clicks - my first thought was that they were a bongo-type percussion effect recorded as part of that "most unique" sound! They worked in a jazz-sorta way, but yes, you'd only want them as an additional option!

Actually I did nothing to that machine as it was in the video. It was a brand new Streetly M4000. I have now had it nearly 6 years and aside from normal maintenance and deadening the key clacking, I have never had any real issues with it. I love it now like the moment I first saw it when it arrived. As I have always said, it is a big box of genius.

Not to take anything away from Frank because he's one of the two best we have in the USA, but all stock M4000's play like that...mine included. While you can do wonders improving the action on an M400, it will never play like an M4000.

You can hocket and spider your way to slick perfection, but I like the artifacts on the M400, the spurious click or clack, little wow or wobble and the uneven tape ends. I am with Fritz. It's like the girl with overbite, the one with the the flaw that isn't a flaw, the thing that makes her identifiable and unforgettable.
