M4000D Rack Mount

M4000D Rack Mount

2014-11-05 by dan_miso@yahoo.com

Hello folks:

I received my M4000D Rack Mount today with the extra expansion card.  The back end has all of the outputs of the full size M4000D.  It comes with a pretty cloth with Union Jack Mellotron logo for cleaning the screens.  I set it up at lunch today and I guess I activated the 2nd series sound card as I was playing MKI and MKII rhythms and fills at one point. I switched to the nylon guitar as I have the same loaded on a rack in one of my M400's.  The sound seems sharper on the digital version but is quite pleasant just the same.  I hooked up the rack to a vacuum tube pre-amp and it sounds nice. Then I connected into a Lexicon reverb and it sounded very nice.

It is a suitable augmentation to my 2 M400's with 8 tape racks and when my M400's are naughty I can switch to the M4000D and become less frustrated.  I would have no hope of playing the 200 tron sounds without the digital version. I chose the M4000D over the Memotron rack as I like the Operating System better. As I have no computer nearby, I chose it over the M-tron Pro also.  When one of my boys upgrade their laptops, I will take the old one and probably get the M-tron Pro in order to access the Streetly Tapes, of which all of my tape racks are comprised.

Cheers,

Dan

Sounds a very nice setup Dan, I'm feeling quite envious.

I haven't ever been able to play an M4000D, I've only been able to compare the M3000 which I believe was taken directly from digital samples and the Streetly extension pack in M-tron pro which were sampled mellotron. I like the M3000 sounds but I think the Streetly pack sounds tronnier! ( or is that just more out of tune :) ). With my tron being unusable at the moment I'm really grateful there are such good alternatives available.

PS, heretic that I am, I still often find myself going to the the free Redtron plugin when I need some tron glue to hold my music together. Thanks to Mike for bringing that one to my attention.

Hi Mark:

Have you heard the Redtron MKV?

I stumbled upon that one a couple of years ago and strangely it does have that MKV vibe to it.  It sounds quite different from the original Redtron which is a sampled M400. It sounds better than the original Mtron, but is limited to 6 sounds-3 violins/flute/cello plus choir/stringsection/brass.

Yes I have it as well, I use the original more as it's simpler. Dan, I seem to remember you used to make synthesizers, are you still doing that? If so can to you send me the link to your youtube channel.

Mark, have you tried Redtron-SE? I'm pretty sure that the original and the MkV use the same samples, but the SE samples are from a different machine.

I think you have me confused with someone else, Mark.  If I knew how make synths, I could fix my own trons!

Dan

I have now and I like it very much. The M300a violins sound pretty good and I can get as close to the BJH sound as anything else I've tried. There is a link on the site to the original samples which well worth checking out. Thanks again.
