As best as I can judge from previously owning and operating an M400? Yes! Actually from what I have learned, it is one step closer to the actual original recordings due to the 24 bit, non-compressed method/process Markus used. And, I really DO NOT miss the inherited "background hiss" on my M400. Some will say "it is part of the charm". Hiss is charm?Rich D.From: Michael Kechagias <mkmellotron@yahoo.gr>

Sent from my iPhoneWell? I do now own an M4000D and am very excited about it. The way it works, the way it sounds, ease of mobility, clarity and stability of the sound which is excellent. Again having owned and recorded my own M400 back in the 70's. I am able to make a genuine judgement.

Sorry for the brevity, as I am replying from a remote region of iPhonekstan.Yeah I have one of Marcus' M4000D machines, with his SD card of 100 extra sounds. It perhaps doesn't sound quite as wonky as a real tron, but neither does it weigh as much, take up as much space, need any maintenance, and it also doubles as a very nice MIDI controller keyboard with Polyphonic Aftertouch.

No way I have golden ears, but I have used earplugs for decades at concerts in the past (both watching them and performing them) and still use them in movie theatres, on trains, subways, planes, near construction sites, etc.I did this after my 'music' friends started to lose their hearing / had their ears damaged by loud sounds and noise. And noise laws/safety are almost never enforced.I do notice the difference between a real Tron and a facsimile. When I heard Oasis 'Wonderwall' for the first time, I knew that was a real Mellotron, and when I heard Nelly Furtado's "I'm like a Bird" I knew that was samples.I think when you own the machine(s) you get to know them better and can discern them more clearly because your ears are trained to expect certain artifacts in the sound. When the artifacts are not there, you really notice it, though sometimes it's hard to put into words what you aren't hearing. The electronics in the machine undeniably process the sound, as does the mechanism. And since each Mellotron/Chamberlin model is slightly different it would be impossible to find one facsimile that replicates all those sounds perfectly. For example I'm particularly used to hearing a 'wide-ness' in sound from the Chamberlin. When it's not there it's feels disappointing and depressing somehow.I think this is all down to what works for you personally. I don't think anyone hears a sound the exact same way as another. On Wed, Apr 9, 2014 at 9:19 PM, gino wong <wonggster@gmail.com> wrote:Having read so many nuanced opinions; Who amoung you tests out clinically as having "Golden Ears".just curious. On Wed, Apr 9, 2014 at 6:07 PM, <tron400@yahoo.com> wrote:I don't think playing sounds that were sampled from a MkII through an M400 will sound like they are played through a MkII because the M400 electronics will color the sound. I agree...
When the artifacts are not there, you really notice it, though sometimes it's hard to put into words what you aren't hearing.

No way I have golden ears, but I have used earplugs for decades at concerts in the past (both watching them and performing them) and still use them in movie theatres, on trains, subways, planes, near construction sites, etc.
I did this after my 'music' friends started to lose their hearing / had their ears damaged by loud sounds and noise. And noise laws/safety are almost never enforced.
I do notice the difference between a real Tron and a facsimile.
When I heard Oasis 'Wonderwall' for the first time, I knew that was a real Mellotron, and when I heard Nelly Furtado's "I'm like a Bird" I knew that was samples.
I think when you own the machine(s) you get to know them better and can discern them more clearly because your ears are trained to expect certain artifacts in the sound.
When it's not there it's feels disappointing and depressing somehow.
I think this is all down to what works for you personally. I don't think anyone hears a sound the exact same way as another.

I don't think playing sounds that were sampled from a MkII through an M400 will sound like they are played through a MkII because the M400 electronics will color the sound. Playing them digitally should work though.
