Gino, you are going to get some vintage Crimson and that's why they have two Memotron racks. No more gossip from me but it is exciting!

Well since Mel Collins and Jakko Jakszyk are in this new Crimson, it stands to reason that the pre-1980 material is being brought out of retirement.

I saw Jakko playing in the Schizoid band twice. His passion for the music of Crim is incandescent and very real. If that is rubbing off on Mr enigmatic it would be quite wonderful.

I just got it ! Two Memotrons.  Classic line ups had 2 M400 on stage. I thought it had something to do with Soundscapes. I wasn't quite believing that Jakko was on board.  I am very glad I was wrong.

I wasn't sure Martin/all, I was seeing, "MemoTron" on here? If this is true I will gracefully bow out. Next time I am in London we'll give you another try Martin. I just could not fit a visit in our schedule this time as I have business in London periodically. I come to London 1 - 2 times a year. I may be there in September. If I am still invited to stop by?
Playing out and at my age, just scared the beJesus outa me carrying around a full size unit again. My son keeps bugging me for one in the house though. My B3 now weighs 21 lbs. I did Have one in the 70's. An original M400. :0)

Cheers and respect, Rich D.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] 4000D users?

2014-04-09 by DiPaolo Richard

Well? I do now own an M4000D and am very excited about it. The way it works, the way it sounds, ease of mobility, clarity and stability of the sound which is excellent. Again having owned and recorded my own M400 back in the 70's. I am able to make a genuine judgement.
But? If I decide to go with a home/studio unit, I would like to and may be personnaly visiting Martins' place...

As best as I can judge from previously owning and operating an M400? Yes! Actually from what I have learned, it is one step closer to the actual original recordings due to the 24 bit, non-compressed method/process Markus used. And, I really DO NOT miss the inherited "background hiss" on my M400. Some will say "it is part of the charm". Hiss is charm?

Well call it a childish remark if you will. Wrong irresponsible come back. Shoot first, then ask questions? Ever think one may be not aware of Martin's digital realm to a degree that they may not be happy with? Anyway, I have no time so silly arguments.

I have the 3100, which is the full size. Reason I did not go with the mini is that it did not have after-touch which allows for greater expression of volume and swells. I also wanted the look. The feel is great, wooden key downs give it a smooth/stand-alone feel like I have never experienced.

It was Les Bradley and his brothers that brought the Mellotron 'to the masses', after the design was invented by Harry Chamberlin.

Re: 4000D users?

2014-04-09 by David Davis

Yeah I have one of Marcus' M4000D machines, with his SD card of 100 extra sounds.
It perhaps doesn't sound quite as wonky as a real tron, but neither does it weigh as much, take up as much space, need any maintenance, and it also doubles as a very nice MIDI controller keyboard with Polyphonic Aftertouch.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] 4000D users?

2014-04-09 by Chris Dale

Hahahaha!!

I love it!

But really, as long as it was being used in recorded music and in concerts and people were listening to it and enjoying it (or hating it), it was brought to the masses.

Re: 4000D users?

2014-04-09 by <tron400@yahoo.com>

What does "wonky" mean? It sounds negative. I have 2 Streetly Trons, a 1972 M400 and a 2013 M4000 (no "D"), and I can find nothing negative about either. Neither requires much maintenance...just a keyboard adjustment now and then. I spend more time tuning my guitars than I do maintaining my Trons, and I play my Trons more than I play my guitars.

And that's what great about it - when you like something, and no one has to 'sell it' to you.

It really pisses me off when a simple discussion suddenly gets hijacked by attitude and confrontation.  And just for the record, go and buy whatever mellotronic platform you choose. The ones we are involved with, GForce, Manikin and Omenie for iPad all sound great with our tapes and are at very competitive prices but there will never be a digital equivalent of a real tron until it emulates all the random artifacts from stray capacitance to 3 volt output and I doubt anyone can be bothered to model them!

Rich, you are welcome anytime.

I think that the nearer you get to the masters, the further you get away from the machine. The "wonkyness' referred to is what makes each tron different IMO. The randomness of each note is what defines it. Also the character of the pre-amp contributes a considerable amount to the end sound. There is a place for both tape and digital versions. They both have strengths and weaknesses. At what point does a mark 2 flute stop sounding like a tron and more like a real flute? I've yet to hear digital re-create the wonderful key click.
Just sayin'

Yeah I have one of Marcus' M4000D machines, with his SD card of 100 extra sounds.
It perhaps doesn't sound quite as wonky as a real tron, but neither does it weigh as much, take up as much space, need any maintenance, and it also doubles as a very nice MIDI controller keyboard with Polyphonic Aftertouch.

Re: 4000D users?

2014-04-09 by David Davis

By "wonky" I was trying to encapsulate the combined effects of wow & flutter and phase-discombobulation created by half a dozen generations of tape copying. The Streetly boys expound upon this on their video on the GMedia site for "The Streetly Tapes" for the M-Tron plugin.

Re: 4000D users?

2014-04-09 by David Davis

I'd say the SD card is certainly "worth it" - it has 100 extra sounds on it, many of which are corkers.
The only thing which remains a source of inconsolable irritation for me is that Marcus didn't include the M400 String Section sound on it, which happens to be my favourite sound! This is particularly ahine as there was space for it, as a couple of the other sounds were duplicated! Ho hum.

I just bought an M4000D mini. I also have one of Markus' Mk. VI's.

I did an A-B comparison recently and there is a difference. The MK. VI has a bit more "presence" if that makes any sense. The difference isn't vast but it's there.

Having said that, the M4000D still sounds really great. It operates well and certainly feels nice when I'm playing it.

I simply have neither the money nor the storage space to continue buying all the tapes I'd ideally like for the MK. VI. Also, I use the tron a lot for recording and having to continuously swap tape frames on a piece with multiple tron sounds is a bit of a pain on occasion. I also can now gig with good sounding "tron" - hauling the MK VI around simply wasn't viable.

So for all those reasons, I'm very happy with the M4000D.

Let me know if you have specific questions.

The Watcher Mix is equal amounts of MkII Violins and MkII Combined Brass. The bass notes are MkII Bass Accordion.

Good post Rick
I did notice there is a lack of "brilliance" if you will, with the M4000D. I am always having to boost the uppers on EQ Playing live. But, it does not compare to hauling the M4000D around as opposed to an M400, which I did when I wore a younger mans cloths.

Now that we can see who has M4000D's. Has anyone been able to find a M4000D light weight case at all? The flight case from Markus is tough but is heavy for me combined with the weight of the M4000D. Each alone is not an issue. Together? A slight issue that I am trying to improve upon.

Yep, well that's why no-one's ever had a hit record featuring a wonky VHS tape.

The pre-amp emulations on the M4000D are built in - on the menus settings,
you can select Chamberlin M1 or Tron MkII.

Chamberlin pre-amp more bright? If you've seen the pre-amp, you'd probably only give it maybe a C+....Not terribly sophisticated -- :-b

Except that mine has a choice of either Chamberlain or m400' not mk2!

The only digital instrument I've heard to come close to the mk2 sound is the Memotron's Crimson's strings I think it was. Even then it didn't quite nail it IMO.
I think it would be great if John and Martin were able to record the raw output of a mk2 (warts n all) and have those untreated sounds available either as tapes for the 400 or as a digital option for say the m3000.
Just a thought.

Thanks Rick Reger,

I also own a Mark VI from Markus and love it and was wondering about the difference since I too want to have the 4000D for gigs.

It perhaps doesn't sound quite as wonky as a real tron, but neither does it weigh as much, take up as much space, need any maintenance, and it also doubles as a very nice MIDI controller keyboard with Polyphonic Aftertouch.

I don't think playing sounds that were sampled from a MkII through an M400 will sound like they are played through a MkII because the M400 electronics will color the sound. Playing them digitally should work though.

No way I have golden ears, but I have used earplugs for decades at concerts in the past (both watching them and performing them) and still use them in movie theatres, on trains, subways, planes, near construction sites, etc.

I did this after my 'music' friends started to lose their hearing / had their ears damaged by loud sounds and noise.
And noise laws/safety are almost never enforced.

I do notice the difference between a real Tron and a facsimile.

When I heard Oasis 'Wonderwall' for the first time, I knew that was a real Mellotron, and when I heard Nelly Furtado's "I'm like a Bird" I knew that was samples.

I think when you own the machine(s) you get to know them better and can discern them more clearly because your ears are trained to expect certain artifacts in the sound.

When the artifacts are not there, you really notice it, though sometimes it's hard to put into words what you aren't hearing.

The electronics in the machine undeniably process the sound, as does the mechanism. And since each Mellotron/Chamberlin model is slightly different it would be impossible to find one facsimile that replicates all those sounds perfectly.

For example I'm particularly used to hearing a 'wide-ness' in sound from the Chamberlin. When it's not there it's feels disappointing and depressing somehow.

I think this is all down to what works for you personally. I don't think anyone hears a sound the exact same way as another.

You are doing the right thing Chris.  Most old Musos have some sort of frequency specific hearing loss and instead of mapping it they try to ignore it .  It is a really good idea to use earplugs,  If you can afford them get Musicians ear plugs with filter inserts from an audiologist. A custom molded set should cost no more than $250 and you can get your in ears fitted properly  at the same time gratis. There are even inserts that can tame concert levels.

What?  HUH???

True stuff, all.  I think much has to do with the fact that in a real 'Tron, each individual note even has its own timbre, response & personality, subtle though it may be.  (Should be, anyway!)  But some of the sample-takers have even sought to "clean up" the sound & make it all smooth & shiny.  Nice, but not Mellotron!

I think Fripp's idea of going out with Memotrons is excellent!  Given his disdain for the analogs, it undeniably makes things easier & safer for setup & reliability.  At least he's using the proper SOUNDS, & not just using orch samples or synths as so many have fallen into.  Mellotron, analog or digital, still has its own unique sound!  Still got mine.

Cheers!

Haven't had them tested in a while, but  my uncorrupted hearing extends to almost 20khz..no kidding. No accounting for taste though or what my wife thinks is an apparent lack of interest or focus in what I'm listening to at any given moment :)

I don't think playing sounds that were sampled from a MkII through an M400 will sound like they are played through a MkII because the M400 electronics will color the sound. Playing them digitally should work though.

I assumed you take of your hearing Fritz. If you hear down to 20 that is better than most Golden Ear patients by a quite a bit.  It is down to the response curve and your compensatory processes.

The only thing Golden Ears really gets you is a chance to listen to a lot of stuff you wish you hadn't.

I can.

Wow, flutter, condition of pinchrollers, head alignment, pressure pad position/ condition/ type of preamp. Tape condition/ position.
Loads of things to take it away from the original master and stamp it's own watermark on the tone!

I agree...

When the artifacts are not there, you really notice it, though sometimes it's hard to put into words what you aren't hearing.
