That sound...I'll never forget the first time I heard it.
Think it was a Moody Blues cut from In Search of the Lost Chord...

How about you?

My first was probably Traffic's "Hole in my Shoe". Mind you I had no idea what was responsible for that sound when I first heard it as a very young slip of a thing.

My first was while listening to Good By Yellow Brick Road.  All the songs listed the instruments and Grey Seal had the word "Mellotron".  I listened over and over trying to figure it out, but couldn't.  I assumed Mellotron was a kind of violin like a Strat is a guitar.

I know I know, pretty dumb.

November, 1969... Sitting in the mud at the West Palm Beach Pop Festival... An unknown British band named King Crimson takes the stage... They open with "In the Court of the Crimson King".

The first notes of a Mellotron I ever heard was maybe the most powerful D chord I had ever heard in my life.

Strawberry Fields was first, but I probably didn't realize it. ITCOTCK was the album that took me for a ride, as far as figuring out what a tron was.

There was this time with my mom, I was probably 14 years old.  We were in Allentown PA for some reason and I wanted to walk by Crest Music Center to see if it was open.  It was not. I could see in the back of the store an M400 sitting there, and I just longed to play it.  I still have that vivid memory.  The M400 felt so exotic to me. I was so into British RnR and the tron felt like England to me.

Congrats to all the lads at Mellotronics!  Thanks for the machines, the tapes, and the parts.

I heard it first on "Strawberry Fields" and "Tuesday Afternoon", but didn't know what it was.
The Moodies "In Search Of..." made me aware of it, but strangely I didn't like it.
Finally, I got to play one in 1975.  My eyes glazed over, and I was hooked.

 Cheers!

I probably didn't realise that it wasn't 'real' flutes on SFF either.  ItCotCK was maybe the first place that I ever saw the word 'Mellotron' with any knowledge, although I had absolutely no idea what it was nor what it looked like.  I wasn't even very sure what the sound eas that it produced, but I was well aware of that other-worldy sound to the album, so as a process of subtraction I assumed this was what the Mellotron was.

I never actually got to see one until I saw a copy of the old (free) magazine 'Making Music' which had an article on one.  The same week I saw an ad in Melody Maker for one, advertising 'MELATRON MINT: £100 ono'.  Changed days.

RE: Celebrate!

2013-12-12 by <mellotron_head@yahoo.co.uk>

In the case of Strawberry Fields, at first I wasn't even sure that the sound was 'intended' to be a flute, it just sounded too weird for that to my ears. I assumed that it was a strange backward tape loop with sort-of-flute-like tones that maybe the Beatles made themselves. It wasn't until shortly afterwards and hearing "Ha Ha Said The Clown", "Let's Go To San Francisco" and "Julia Dream" and hearing that odd sound again that I started to really become curious about what was behind that sound. And that was only the flutes. Once I heard "Hole In My Shoe" and The Kinks' "Days" (again not realising it was actually strings, it sounded too odd and 'spacey' to me), then other sounds such as the brass on the Stones' "We Love You", followed by reading in various places about the Mellotron, eventually I put two and two together, and realised with much amazement that so many of my favourite sounds on these records were all made by the same instrument! I've been addicted to the 'tron ever since. Tony S.

RE: Celebrate!

2013-12-12 by <dieter_vanmarcke@yahoo.com>

When I was 18, I went to see a band called the Musical Box who restage Genesis shows from the Gabriel era.  I already used to listen to my dad's vinyls a lot: Pink Floyd, early Genesis, Deep Purple, .. .
When I first saw the musical box I just started class to become audio producer.  They opened with "Watcher in the skies", and I thought... Well this sounds great, but... in 1972 there were no samplerkeyboards...  I thought.  So the next day I looked for the answer:  This was played on a Mellotron.  I fell in love with the instrument, bought my first M400 a few years later and now I have the great M4000

RE: Celebrate!

2013-12-12 by Jason Wielispach

I wanted one from the first time I heard one and figured out what that sound was. Watcher Of The Skies and all that King Crimson stuff just fascinated me. I never thought I could afford/find one. Then, I bought the one from bandmate Victor DeLarenzo of the Violent Femmes. When I first heard it well recorded in one of my recordings I about pissed my pants in joy. I have to stop myself from using it on every recoding I do. Having my Arvo Part/Gorecki choir ready at any time is an improvisers dream.

I was introduced to the Mellotron by Yes (Close to the Edge, and Tangerine Dream). bought #510 in 1975,
The lads at Streetly did a full restoration some years later, and then I bought their M4000.
New of the Moody Blues, but here in the good ole U.S.A. they didn't get much air play, at least from my experience.
"In the Court" came out when I was only 14, so that had something to do with it as well.

Frankly I was more in touch with TD as I could play along with it.
Thanks again John, Martin and the Bradley brothers for their refinement of the Chamberlin.

Merry Christmas to all!
