The Mellotrons app question

The Mellotrons app question

2013-09-21 by <fourtytwominds@yahoo.com>

This came up on Keyboard Corner. A user over there is wondering if the app has midi capability. Figured I'd just ask direct for them. Martin?

Yes Sean, the app has midi, virtual midi, audiobus and more sounds. There will be in app purchases of new sounds in the next few months. It sounds fantastic!

virtual midi is where one app can be controlled by another i.e Chordion app plays the Mellotronics app internally within the iPad.

From the nextweb.com:

"‘Virtual MIDI’ – essentially the ability to link the apps together and allow them to control one another much in the way that a normal MIDI controller might control a software synth on a PC or Mac."

in iOS or other pad enviroments.

Apparently the makers of Audiobus are working on interapplication sync for a future upgrade. I would speculate that the inevitable convergence of iOS and MacOS will see  Coreaudio and Coremidi being integrated into a pad environment...just a guess.

The one thing I would like to see is a lock control where you cant interupt what you are doing unless you really want to.

I am glad they are doing in app purchases for sounds. As much as some in app things make it seem like you have lost your stuff if you reconfigure. The app is may in fact be too cheap.  I want these guys to stay in business, they should only be so nice.

Maybe we should form an original adopters club where where we get a discount based on previous activity.

Thanks for the explanation, Fritz.  Being neither a Mac person nor really a great lover of MIDI it's amazing how this stuff has progressed.  Just yesterday I was listening to music on my phone streamed from the Amazon Cloud and I got to thinking how the blazes I would explain was I was doing to my 25-year-old self (who thought he was pretty tech-savvy at the time)

You're play a 'computer music file' someplace but you don't really know where other than to say it is 'in the clouds', even though you have the 'CD' of the music, and it's being beamed across some 'vast international computer network' that doesn't seem to have that many wires to a 'mobile phone' from where you can hear it. Get out of here. Next thing you'll be telling me there is a black President in the White House....

What exactly does one need to control an ipad music app from a midi keyboard and how much does it cost?

You need a USB midi keyboard and the lead that allows you to plug USB into an iPad. Keyboard - GBP80, lead - GBP15. You probably already have a keyboard so it's just the lead.

Thanks Martin, unfortunately I need the Ipad as well and I suppose I would really have to get the ipad 2 rather than the mini.  I am fairly tempted to get one, there are some great music apps for it which seem to be good value for money. I am particularly keen on the Animoog, Samplr and the Korg Polysix apps and of course the M3000, I am assuming the m300a violins will be in the next update? Not essential though as my own samples have a very individual sound to them.

Cheers

Mark

Mark, save up and get a refurbished iPad 4 from Apple. Big saving, cheaper than an iPad 2 on Ebay and much more stable, faster and enjoyable.

Thanks again Martin. Not being familiar with Apple gear I think I might have mixed up my numbers I think I meant the 4. Just back from Wellington and saw so many things I would like, was really taken with the Korg Electro 4 HP73, Korg MS20 mini and the Korg Krome.
