Foxtrot just arrived, played Watcher of the Skies,
very disappointing, can't understand what all the fuss
is about.

No I quite liked the mellotron and chamberlin sounds
of the Moody Blues but not the material. Quite like
the Genesis material but not the mellotron sounds.
Prefer King Crimson and BJH to both. Really enjoy
playing Cirkus at maximum volume.

Hah! I thought I was the only one! I do like Hackett's little guitar piece -- sort of like his version of Steve Howe's Mood For A Day on Yes' Fragile.

Hi Martin, Rock's just for fun, nostalgia and
frightening the cat. The Well Tempered Clavier and the
Handel and Corelli Concerto grossi are all I really
need these days.

I keep trying to arrange Corelli for massed m-tron
string samples but the sound it never sounds right for
some reason.

Still I do like Janacek particularly the operas and I
am fortunate that the NZ Opera are doing Jenufa in
Wellington later this year.

When I get #1565 going I am going to be the only
baroque mellotron player in the southern hemisphere!

WHAT?!?!?!? The production is really bad on foxtrot and nursery cryme, which doesn't help, so I can see why you'd be underwhelmed. A live version might help.

obviously has good music within the genre but to my ears the vast quantity is utterly pointless and disposable. Martin,

With all due respect, it takes a little longer than a month to write a symphony, especially if you're doing it by hand. Try many months to several years. And very few people did the whole thing in their head. It's worked out bits at a time. The only composer I know who could hold a whole piece in his head was Mozart -- and you don't think much of his music! ;)

But you're right: most prog is not particularly good music. Interesting? Certainly, at times. Well played? Definitely. But music for the ages? Not much of it.

I agree. I was making the point that very simple music takes bands months to write and record yet a serious composer can collate his/her ideas for a vast number of people to perform in a similar time span and the peice will usually work first time. And I hate schizophrenic prog that leaps from different styles and time signatures without ever developing an idea to some sort of fruition. I suspect this pap isn't born out of unbelievable talent and an abundance of creativity, it's more a lack of ability to explore and develop, to go on an excursion and then resolve.

This current thread of conversation brings us back to a topic that's been hashed over, I mean, discussed many times before. The beauty (or horridness) of music and other aesthetic issues is going to vary greatly with each individual. Albeit, we can come to some kind of consensus of agreement on the music of the likes of the Beatles, Beethoven, and Oscar Peterson, and disagreement on the likes of rap, prog, Michael Bolton, etc. I happen to like Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition since playing in an orchestral version back in high school (pre-ELP). Others may think it's doo-doo. The latter doesn't sway my opinion of it one iota nor do I lose sleep over it. One may listen to Watcher Of The Skies or Tales From Topographic Oceans and have them induce an aural orgasm; for others, they may induce a bowel movement. One man's medicine is another man's poison; One man's ceiling is another man's floor (P. Simon); Eye of the beholder. We all love our Mellotrons, yet others swear by their DX7's. BTW, we're right on that one!

Hi all-

Yeah, the title track does wear on you. Almost no
use of volume pedal for dynamic effect. And, wasn't
the audio compression used in the early 70's
wonderful? It 'bout smashed the overall dynamics down
to nothing. I still like the mix of violins and
brass, though (I know, I just bought the mix). A very
distant and sad sound, but yearning for dynamic
swells. I picked up "Genesis Live" recently. The
tron on "Watcher" opens with the violins more
prominent that the brass, which sounds strange.

Prog? Gimme "Siberian Khatru", "Topographic
Oceans", "Take a Pebble", "Selling England By the
Pound"(the track), "Black Light Syndrome"(something
more recent), and, the original "Quadrophenia". So
there.

What CD version of "Foxtrot" do you have? I seriously wouldn't touch
the recent high-tech remasters with a bargepole. I bought a couple of
them and unloaded them ASAP. Glad I kept my old Genesis CDs. The newer
super-duper reissues have all been given modern mastering and are far
worse for it IMO. Go back to the vinyl or the first US CDS, or even
the first remaster series from the early/mid 90s. You'll find there's
a whole lot more dynamics there than you're hearing, if you have the
version I suspect you have. YMMV.

Most of it is (to my ears) a ham-fisted attempt to steal ideas by people
who can actually write. Some of it is so primitive that it's laughable -
Genesis are a prime example. It's not that they cannot play their
instruments - they obviously can - but they are so /mannered/. The
lyrics don't exactly help either. I still think that my abiding
fondnress for King Crimson lies in the fact that their best work was
always done when the singer simply shut up and let the rest of the band
get on with it.

Oh don't start me on time signatures. There are CLEARLY instances where
bands have written something in 4 or 3 and then quite deliberately
transmogrified it into 7 or 9 just to 'prog it up'. It's musical tokenism.

Wow....is there actually anyone left who swears by the DX7? I mean, really?

I've used one before - most of its horrid reputation is down to the fact that it's a pig to program and so everyone uses the presets. It's actually a pretty good synth if you ever take the time to get to know it.

I used to love my DX7 (or rather, TX7, it took up a whole lot less
space & cost less) I got some great sounds on it. Had to use lots of
chorus, of course, but you could say the same about any of the crappy
1-osc polysynths from the early '80's

It always does my head in to see a bunch of people dissing progressive
rock on the MELLOTRON MAIL LIST, wtf. Maybe if I sign up to the TB303
list, it'll be full of people saying "acid house, pff, lame,
rollseyes.gif" and so on.

Prog's signal/noise ratio doesn't seem any less uneven than any other
subgenre of rock to me - better than some, worse than others. It
seems pretty moribund to me right now, and has seemed so for a good
few years now. My wife bought me a box set of 1930's Busby Berkeley
films on DVD for christmas, after listening to the tunes and
arrangements used in the routines on those, most or maybe even all
rock music sounds pretty small-scale, unimaginative, unabitious and
unexceptional by comparison.

Hi-

Maybe that's why I like "Selling England", as my CD
was bought back in '86. Guess I'll also drag out the
vinyl and compare stuff. Thanks.

The most recent remastering that impressed me was
Yes' "Tales from Topographic Oceans" on Rhino. A bit
more dynamics, and a restored opening section to the
1st track. However, Rhino's remastering always sounds
a little grainy to me. The mastering compression of
the 70's is very apparant, though. The bonus tracks
are early run-throughs, and have a lot of dynamics,
well worth the listen.
