Job? Hobbies? Special Skills?

Job? Hobbies? Special Skills?

2013-07-30 by tron400

I'm sure there's more to our lives than just Mellotrons. So, what else do you do?

I'm an IT guy with The Hartford, but I'm retiring at the end of this year. I'm primarily a bass guitarist, but I fool around on guitar, keys and modular synth. Other hobbies/skills are model and high power rocketry, martial arts (American-style Kenpo Karate, Chinese Wushu, Japanese Ninjutsu), traveling, walking in the park with Wifey and watching my stepdaughter struggle through college.

OK, your turn.

I'm a composer and creative director at a commercial music production house. I have 2 great kids, great wife and a 6 year old beagle.  Love to bike, hike and go camping.  I'm a pretty good carpenter too and enjoy the occasional  wood related project. I'll tear stuff apart and put it back together if needed.

I have been a mastering engineer and producer my entire adult life,  These days I have been building analog synthesizer modules (over 80), some gunsmithing of Curios & Relics, but it all goes out the window when my dogs are around.

I'm a marketing writer for a big insurance company.

Before starting here 9 years ago I was a freelance writer for about 10 years. In addition to marketing work, I was also a freelance music journalist. I wrote for a variety of rags but primarily for the Chicago Reader and Chicago Tribune, where I had a weekly concert preview columm from the fall of '95 to the summer of '04. I also reviewed shows, records and did the occasional feature story.

Years ago I did a lot of fiction writing but never sold anything -- now I focus on writing/recording music in my home studio.

I also sail Hobie Cats (catamarans) in the summer and practice zen buddhism.

I like fishing and the race track (horse racing) but don't spend very much time doing either of those these days, which is too bad.

I am currently a technical project manager contracted to the University of Washington, Bioengineering Department

in Seattle, WA.  I commute once or twice a months to Seattle from my home in Stockton, CA.  I started off as an Electrical Engineer

in the 70’s.  I designed and built recording studios and video editing suites.  I owned an electronic repair shop and a music store.  I owned

and operated an avionics and mobile radio sales and service shop at the Stockton airport.  I later designed security and surveillance

electronics.  I owned a server colocation business and provided IT support to the private and public sector.  I have been self employed

for most of my life.  From the early 70’s forward I played guitar and keyboards in various groups, mainly rock and some blues.  During

that time I played a Hammond C3 with two 122 Leslies and just about any vintage keyboard you can think of with the notable exception

of a Mellotron which I always wanted but for some reason I never acquired…although I did play a couple on recordings (and repaired a few).

I have pretty much retired from playing due to some health issues but still mix live shows and record and master for a few select groups as I have

the time.  I have three wonderful kids.  My son David just moved out to Lebanon, OR to fight fires and my oldest daughter Kelsy is moving to Seattle, WA

in a couple of weeks to advance her medical testing career.  That will leave me with my youngest daughter Ashley still living at home.  Our three

wonderful dogs are Andy (little white dog), Jake (Burmese Mountain dog), and Jack the German Shepard.  Andy (and possibly Jake for protection) will

be going to Seattle with my daughter.  My hobbies are off-roading (4X4), firearms, camping, walking my dogs, and working on special projects with my crazy

physicist buddy Dave Navone.  I think that about covers it…….short version anyhow.

Work as a dispatcher for a garbage company. I have a recording studio in the attic of my 1865 farmhouse. I have a son who is 12 named Lowell Wyatt for Lol Coxhill/Robert Wyatt. I play primarily reeds, bass guitar and my mellotron.

I also host the last remaining classical music program on the radio here in Milwaukee. I play mostly 20th century chamber music on my show.

I'm into Gurdjieff, modern art and grain elevators.

I'm described as a "Servicing Technician" by the National Health Service, though my qualifications and experience would probably suggest that I'm an Engineer. I repair, maintain and commission patient-connected Medical Equipment ("machines that go 'ping'!") at one of the 2 main hospitals in Edinburgh, Scotland. I can't stand the job, as it's dull, boring, repetitive, mind-numbing, etc. However, they probably do over-pay me. Before that, I was an Electronic Development Test Engineer with a Defence Electronics Company, also in Edinburgh, testing and re-designing Test Equipment for Airborne Radar Systems - happy days!

I'm married, with NO kids. I let my job spill into my private life, and I design digital electronic stuff that has nothing to do with Micro-processors or Micro-controllers, as I have NEVE got to grips with them - they are a very black art. The Motorola 6802 is about my limit! I compile numerical puzzles that are about 2 or 3 steps beyond Sudoku - I've compiled over 3,300 of them with a view to submitting them to a national daily newspaper for publication. I'm also interested in public transport, such as railways, buses and trams (or streetcars if you're west of the puddle). Yeah, I know - sad as you like!
I am NOT (by any stretch of the imagination) a musician, though I try to make acceptable sounds & noises with my CS01, PSRE-333 and M400. If I want more stuff, then I'll have to move house, cos I ain't got the room.

Any questions?

I was a bass player for many years until I listened to the Moodies and saw Michael Iceberg.  After getting goosebumps, I was hooked and bought a Chamberlain M-1 from Mr. Harry and Richard.  I played in a lot of local cover bands over the years and when I switched over to keys, I was fortunate to play with another keyboardist who played piano, organ and synth which let me concentrate on my Chamberlain, Polymoog and mini-moog (late 70's).  I have switched back and forth between bass & keys, but keyboards are where my heart is at.  I've been married for 20 years with 2 dogs and work for a Tourism Board which requires traveling quite a bit and keeps me from being in a band.  I really enjoy creating music, but need to get some recording gear.

Work as a dispatcher for a garbage company. I have a recording studio in the attic of my 1865 farmhouse. I have a son who is 12 named Lowell Wyatt for Lol Coxhill/Robert Wyatt. I play primarily reeds, bass guitar and my mellotron.

I also host the last remaining classical music program on the radio here in Milwaukee. I play mostly 20th century chamber music on my show.

I'm into Gurdjieff, modern art and grain elevators.

I'm 42 and own a record store/resale shop. I've been married 16 years to my high school sweetheart. We have 2 kids, 8 & 6, with another expected sometime within the next 2 weeks.

I don't have time to do too much nowadays. I haven't fired up the mellotron in about half a year. My main hobbies are record collecting, playing drums, collecting vintage keyboards ( I have close to 40, but don't tell my wife), Triumph Spitfires ( I have a green 1974), writing songs, playing drums in The Loose Screws, hound dogs, Woody Allen movies, walking, biking, and hanging out with my family.

Prior to owning a store, I was a computer graphics guy for a souvenir/ novelty company. I love Mexican food, bacon-cheeseburgers, and pizza.

I'm an East London-born 46-year-old web designer for a publishing and events company in SW London but live 30 miles north of London (in Luton, Bedfordshire) with my partner in a civil partnership. Spending far too much time at work and commuting and nowhere near enough time on my main interests, but working on rectifying that situation...

So, main interests: I've always been primarily a musician, playing various keyboards and dabbling with anything that makes a noise I might find interesting. I was in a local East London-based band during my 20s, main influences being punk, psychedelia and (the dreaded term) 'prog rock' and at one point we were told that we sounded like a cross between Gong, Hawkwind, Syd Barrett, The Bonzos and - after buying my first 'tron in 1986 - King Crimson. Now, I'm no longer in any bands but do have the odd collaboration which is always fun, but mainly recording my own stuff under my 'band pseudonym' of Frobisher Neck, and had a few things (mainly covers) released on vinyl-only label Fruits de Mer records.

Other than that, I love designing psychedelic artwork, am a lifelong mad-keen record collector, have no interest in sport, can't wait to move away from Luton and want to get a dog.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Job? Hobbies? Special Skills?

New home sales are my main form of income, which enables me to dabble in recording the odd album every decade or so! So God willing there should be time enough for at least one more before my time on planet Earth is done.
Started my musical life back in 73 in Christian gospel/ folk band 11.59. Our album "This our Sacrifice of Praise" was released in 74 and I played as much mellotron as my then (anti-tron) producer would allow.
In the 80s synth pop was my mainstay in the band Flip, with self titled album recorded at Abbey Road in 1985/6.
Mid 90's. and I started work on my CD "Andy's Diner" the first album to feature all of my own songs, with notable contributions from Kelly Groucutt (ELO) sax player Butch Thomas (Sting) and   the brilliant Doug Scarratt on guitar (Saxon).
The last few years, I've been working on the recently released Kracked Earth album "Splash" which again features tron, both digital and original everywhere. This is available in CD and download from the MRR website or via Amazon, CD Baby or ITunes.
I've been lucky enough to own a number of trons over the years, some good, some in need of a good overhaul. All sounded different from each other, so it makes me laugh when I hear people discussing the virtues of a perfect Mellotron sound. By definition, there's no such thing.

Pleased to be here, amongst people who cherish the musical legacy these machines have left on music of all genres over the years. We are the keepers of the flame.

I also thank god for Martin and John here in the UK and for Frank S and others around the world for keeping these wonderful machines running for us all to enjoy.

Best Regards to all.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Job? Hobbies? Special Skills?

2013-07-31 by Chris Dale

I'm a school teacher but started out playing keyboards, drums and a little guitar in several bands and then went on to become a session musician using the Mellotron, Chamberlin, and Optigan .  Those keyboards got the most attention (in that order respectively).

I wound up being given / buying  (in very shitty condition) doubles or triples of those 3 keyboards as 'parts sources'. This was before the mid 90's resurgence. Later on, when Mellotron parts became available again, I abandoned the idea of using wrecked machines for parts and spent years either selling or restoring them instead (much the way Frank does now).
One of these turned out to be Rick Wakeman's Double Mellotron (which was where the idea to do the production run for the MKV came from). One of the Chamberlins belonged to Bob Seger's keyboardist Robyn Robbins. The restorations were funded with jobs at a medical lab (nice and safe) and also some work as a Private Investigator (not safe!)
I was married for a few years until I walked in and caught my wife in the 'act'. I'm glad we had no kids.

I realized these jobs / relationships were not for me, and that's when I became a schoolteacher.
I teach all ages (from Kindergarten to Adults) overseas in different countries, mostly English and Science.
I use weird 'props' to educate/entertain the kids. Some of these include holograms, wooly mammoth tusks/hair, meteorites from the Moon and Mars, money/wine from North Korea, and gold, platinum, and silver in their original unprocessed states. No kidding!

I've always loved sci-fi and work on sci-fi miniature model landscapes as a hobby. I was occasionally building these in the past, but took it a bit more seriously after meeting Roger Dean at a weekend course he gave on Futuristic Design and Architecture.  For an income supplement, I occasionally rent out Space Age furniture props to friends who are film-makers. One of these was a Djiin chair from Expo 67 - (the same chairs appear in the space lounge in 2001 A Space Odyssey).
This friend also asked me to do the soundtrack for his film "Primordial Ties" using the Moog, Orchestron and Optigan.
I've also been involved in attempts to resurrect the Birotron in some form, but the project is an ongoing, extremely costly and time consuming rescue mission. It's like trying to reassemble a shredded encyclopedia in a foreign language with no lights on in the room.

When I'm not teaching, I'll work on the aforementioned projects, composing music, fixing instruments, writing a short story, or working on miniature models.

I have to say that I'm grateful for those of you on this list, members past and present, as without some of you, and your witty comments, links, music etc. I would not have succeeded at some things, and would be less inspired to work hard at the things I find myself now doing.

Cheers to all of you.

Sincerely

Chris Dale

  •   I am a senior artist for the American Museum of Natural History...meaning I build and work on the exhibits there. I've had lots of jobs to supplement my real life as a musician but I always sought work that could be applied somehow to my creative endeavors.
  •   I got my first real job in a furniture factory in 73 so that I could buy a mellotron and join a band called Odyssey. I made $73 a week! I then founded the band Cathedral and we made "Stained Glass Stories". I've worked as a damper installer at Steinway and Sons and as a production manager at Woodstock Percussion.
  •   I've been very interested in building percussion and wind instruments and still have a little workshop that I tinker on marimbas and metallophones and other experiments. I am working on a sound installation these days.
  •   I  founded a "production co." - Phoshorescent Records last year. Right now it is only a trademark but I plan to use it to release my own material and to collaborate with new musicians I have been meeting in and around the N.Y.C area. I have been outfitting my space "Tower Mews" to do audio and video abeit by the seat of my pants.
  •   I've been married and seriously involved a few times now and I think I am finally getting pretty good at it and will eventually get it right. I have four kids and three grandkids. One of them (grandkids) is terrified of me which I find amusing but a little sad and altogether understandable.
  •   Most of all I love making my music and of that process I love sitting at the M400 and M1 the best...those instruments never fail to inspire me. The tron is the centerpeice of my work.

Mid 90's. and I started work on my CD "Andy's Diner" the first album to feature all of my own songs, with notable contributions from Kelly Groucutt (ELO) sax player Butch Thomas (Sting) and   the brilliant Doug Scarratt on guitar (Saxon).
The last few years, I've been working on the recently released Kracked Earth album "Splash" which again features tron, both digital and origina l everywhere.

Randleman, which is 15 minutes south of Greensboro. Smaller house, 6 times as much land. At the moment I'm ripping out a door frame so that I can get my trons and a sofa up the stairs and into a large room over the garage. At the moment, I do not have a proper workshop. No basement. However, I am going to rent a commercial space and build one there until I can complete a 600 square foot building on my property.

Our dogs think they have gone to dog heaven. They go to bed exhausted and satisfied each night, unlike the wife and I, who go to bed exhausted and sore. We've been here for two weeks. Our furniture has been here for just more than a week. There is much to be done.

Andy,

A friend in Toronto once loaned me a bunch of CD's for a 4 hour trip back to my home city.
I listened to each one as I drove and one of them was "Sacrifice of Praise"

I loved it!

Unfortunately when I withdrew it from the CD player, the CD player wound up scratching the CD and it wouldn't play anymore.

That taught me to never trust putting CD's in rental vehicle CD players.

But I remembered seeing your name in the album credits.

There were several women in the credits as well.

I'm a land use planning consultant - the zoning dude - currently mostly helping AT&T to get permits for towers and antennas, which they need desperately. I also work with property owners and builders to get throught the rigorous zoning processing here in most Southern California cities and counties.
I'm married to a wonderful lady and have two strapping boys, 20 and 16, one an Eagle Scout and the other on his way. How in the world did they grow that much!! I'm an assistant scoutmaster and love to organize and go out on long backpack treks (leaving for eight days in the Sierras in August) and I put on The Big Ride, the largest scout cycling event in the western US, where I help boys ride 100 miles in one day - way too much fun...
We live on 17.5 acres in the desert of Southern California with a bunch of critters (horses, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, cats and dogs). I'm a member of our local school board and do way too much volunteering...stretched very thin at times.
I got into music in Jr. High with my choir teachers Mr. Roy Klassen and Miss Mary Kolegraff (who, in 1974, turned us onto Jethro Tull; she married and became Mrs. Mary Rago, taught at John Burroughs High and became the inspiration for High School Musical and Glee) - and then in High School by Glenn DeLange and Regnal Hall, who later became Director of Orchestras at Disney. All great mentors. It was during all this that I joined a rock band and then learned to play guitar, bass and keyboards - and was influenced by The Moodies, Strawbs, BJH, et al - and became interested in that "sound" - and eventually bought my Chamberlin M2 in the early '80's for $1500 with money I earned over the summer. I gigged with the Chamby at several LA venues including while we were headliners/regulars at Gazzarri's on Sunset. I bought an M1 with custom tapes from Wayne Cook (keyboardist for Player) and eventually sold it to Dave Kean (when he was still in North Hollywood), but not before I took Wayne's digitally controlled motor set-up and put it in my M2. I'm pretty sure Dave still has it.
I don't get to play as often as I like and haven't been in an organized musical situation for too many years.

I remember you having the M2 (but I'm not sure why) Vance! Must be an amazing machine. I knew a band "Rat Race Choir" who used to club the east coast with one. Wish I could remember the keyboardist name, he was quite involved with Chamberlins. Seems like there were a lot more of Harry and Richard's machines on the west coast, not so many made it east.

I do digital forensics for a law enforcement arm of the government.  It involves a fair amount of travel and I get to do some teaching too, usually to other law enforcement agencies or to University students taking courses in the same field.

At heart I think I would still describe myself as a mathematician who would rather be a musician but who does other stuff to finance his life.

Twice married, twice divorced, no kids.  Now living with someone I met 26 years ago and have been with her for 16.  One enormous flat in the Edinburgh city centre and one beautiful cottage on the Scottish east coast, three cats, two grown-up stepchildren and very little else I could ask for.

Hello!

I`m a Classification Officer in a 600 bed maximum security Detention Centre in the Provincial Correctional system (sentences less than 2 years) here in Toronto. That means I complete assessments based on security requirements and program needs and arrange for inmates to be transferred to Correctional Centres to serve their sentences. I also occasionally act as the Deputy Superintendent Programs when my regular boss is away. All totally related to my degree in Human Geography and Classical Studies. (Ha!)
Hobbies include my 2 M400s and 8 tape racks, 5 synths, Hohner pianet, 4 electric guitars(Gibson Les Paul, Flying V, Fender Strat, Gunn Les Paul), 2 bass (Fender JP-90, 1975 Rickenbacker 4001), 1 acoustic (Takamine), drum kit (crappy), PA, HiWatt, Laney, Marshall, Behringer and Ibanez amplification plus odds and sods effects. It is entirely unfortunate that I am an incompetent musician but I have fun anyway. Prog started it all of course. I own lots of imported prog albums worth a heap. Good old Vertigo label stuff and the like.
Also I am a wargamer with about 17500 hand painted lead alloy model soldiers in 6mm, 15mm and 25mm and 54mm scales in many historical time periods. Like Chris Dale, I build miniature models (Minas Tirith is cool, plus other buildings, fortifications etc.) All this on a landscaped 15 foot by 6 foot wargames table. I painted most of the miniatures myself.
Married 25 years to teacher and author Jean and we have 2 sons (20 and 17). One, Emerson at the University of Toronto and the other, Austin about to attend Ryerson University. When the boys were younger I was involved with Scouts Canada for about 13 years.
My book shelves are crammed with about 600 books; mostly historical military history and uniform publications.
I enjoy gardening at home and at the summer cottage on Georgian Bay.
When I watch TV it is historical, romantic or fantasy mini-series (The Tutors, The Borgias, Game of Thrones, Vikings, all the Jane Austin stuff, renditions of Bronte sisters books, Thomas Hardy etc.) and some sports (the CFL-Canadian Football League, is my favourite).

It is great to have this resource to keep the trons alive and to read about other interesting instruments and personalities.

Best wishes,

Dan Miso

I'm a self-employed lighting engineer/operator for music shows and video technician, and musician. I primarily tour around Europe with arena tours and also do a lot of festivals in Belgium where I live. I have no other hobbies beside music ;-)
