So I experienced my first cycling mishap tonight (that didn't take long)... I cycled from station 1 to 6, I heard a loud high pitched squeal, and some of the tape was misaligned on the rear drum.
So my question is,,,, should I try try to manually roll the drum back to station 1 hoping the tape straightens itself out and realigns?
Thanks in advance.

You could try that, but you're also in danger of getting the tape caught on other things as you wind it back.
Some of the M300's were prone to this problem because of the material the guides were made from.
You have to cycle these models manually (only by hand).

You could cycle it to the m300a violins. Then never cycle it again :)

Wasn’t there mention of the chains being too slack? Maybe that explains the misalignment in winding the tape on the drum?
The squeal is odd. I sometimes get that when a tape is stuck in or before the tapebox.Power off as quickly as possible …

Because of the age of these cycling machines, Jerry Korb would never cycle more than one station at a time for fear of spilling tapes. The 1/4" tape is also more prone to static buildup, causing tape stickies. Fortunately, the new machines don't and won't suffer this problem.

As a fellow M300 owner (but this applies to MkIIs as well) I'd advise making sure the tape isn't wrapped around anything else before you do anything. Take the keyboard out and maybe the front pin rail as well to expose the whole tape path and have a good look. Then undo the clutch and gently wind it back, unraveling any tape as you go. Did you find out what the squeak was? Usually loud squeaks are associated with tape mishaps jamming the cycling mechanism and stretched tape!!
If you need any advice email me privately on j.k.bereford@shef.ac.uk
