Off topic Analog Synths and laptops

Off topic Analog Synths and laptops

2012-08-27 by mellotronmadness

Much to my surprise, and my wife's, I returned from a recent trip to Wellington without a new synthesizer, I tried out the Moog Slim Phatty and the DSI Mopho, I quite liked the Mopho but in the end I decided to stick with the Microkorg.

I also tried the Roland Gaia which has a great layout but to my ears a rather disappointing sound. Oddly enough if I was going to be tempted to buy another synthesizer it would be the M-Audio Venom.

Anyway with Windows 8 on the horizon I've decided to replace my 10 yr old laptop with something a bit more powerful.

I am computer literate but I haven't been following hardware for some years, I am looking at getting a laptop with an Intel I5 processor, 4 gig of ram and a 500 gig hard drive running windows 7.

I'll be using my usb sound card. I can't face getting to grips with Apple and anyway I've got too much pc software that I still want to use.

Anybody have any other suggestions or advice?

Thanks

Mark

I’ll second Frank’s advice and add that if you plan on doing any production using virtual synths, get an even larger hard drive. I have a 750Gb on my Dell and in 6 short months it has filled up considerably. Native Instruments Komplete 8 runs in at 380Gb and actually ships on a hard drive itself. If you can swing it, go Core I7. And don’t even trouble yourself with questions about Win 8 for a long while. It will be the next generation of Vista. Consider that Windows XP still has a huge install base, and is technically supported by MS until 2014. Windows 7 is a great OS and will be with us past 2020 no doubt, unless Microsoft listens to users about the Win 8 and provides a suitable path for business users. Also, my experience as a died in the wool Windows user, a lot of music stuff is written for Mac first and they lag in support for the latest windows releases. Protools LE only supported Win 7 recently, and that SW is history.

I forgot to add the best use of an Apple product:

I was visiting my son and daughter-in-law last night and I asked my son if I could borrow a newspaper.

“This is the 21st century, old man,” he said. “We don't waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad.”

I can tell you, that damn fly never knew what hit it...

Thanks for all the helpful advice, I have nearly decided on a Dell Inspirion 15 R it has an i7 processor 6gb ram and a 1 terrabyte drive for $1000 US, it would I think be at least 20% cheaper in the US but it's a good price for New Zealand. Considering that I'm only using FL Studio 6 and Audacity on a 10 yr old laptop with a celeron processor, 512kb ram and a 30gig drive, it should keep me going for a while. Seems a reasonable compromise between price and performance.

Microcenter has them for about $70 for 64Gb, and the trend is basically getting to $1/Gb which is supposed to be trigger. Reminds me of the time when $1/MB for RAM was a big deal. Now who even cares. The big thing with SSD is whether the current leaders, particularly OCZ will stay in business long enough to compete with Intel. There’s talk about Seagate buying them. Then we should see the prices drop through the floor if Intel and Seagate go at it. Assuming the fab plants can make enough NAND chips.

Fritz, it looks like I got an extra special price. The guy who sold me 5 500 gig drives at $80 each had trouble finding work until I wrote him a letter of recommendation (he did 9 yrs for manslaughter). I did not realize he was doing me a favor. Even at normal $1 a gig that is a great price.

A number of higher level performance abilities are constrained (turned off) and you have to have to go into the machine and physically configure it to get full performance.

I loaned my suite to someone to edit video and she asked me if I took the governer off the buss.

The local art college has a config profile to open up the machines. It seems the gov't didn't want them eported at full performance.

I'll get a list of limitations and the jumper set ups for you.

Do you use desktop Mac Pros ? I am finding out some crazy shit about them.

Mark,
Good luck with the Dell, I think you have made a fine choice.

I just got some solid state usb 3.0 drives for my wifes new Macbook pro (Windoews)

Those things are so cool, fast and cheap.

Thanks

Mark
