Froese keeps screwing up

Froese keeps screwing up

2012-08-20 by Bruce Daily

Hi all-
I just got the Sorcerer filmtrack cd, a 2011 issue. Once again, Mr. Froese has screwed with the tracks, seemingly "updating" them. The 'trons are mostly present, but a lot of new sounds have been added, which takes away from the brilliant simplicity of the original tracks. In the late '90s, his efforts at fortifying old Tangerine Dream re-issues were credited somehow on the recordings, so we had some warning at least. Not so on this one. The CD notes are extensive, and indicate that the original recordings stood the test of time. I am quite disappointed with this CD. The original music didn't need anything else. I simply was hoping to get a sound that was better than the old MCA pressing, which was poorly done & noisy. Avoid this CD if possible. It has a "Reactive" label, # EREACD 1023. A waste of money.

Never underestimate the ignorance and insecurity of the revisionists.
This is why I buy still buy vinyl for music, and excellent copy VHS (burned to DVD) for pre 1990 classic TV shows.
It may seem stupid, but when I buy those, I feel secure knowing no one has done an artistic rape of the original under the guise of digital remastering music, and/or adding CGI where there was none.
I know exactly what I'm getting.
In sum:
If it ain't broke - don't fix it
Leave well enough alone

I had the same reaction to a Carpenters Remastered Box Set. David Carpenter screwed with the original drum sounds. He replaced a bunch of kick drums and NEVER time corrected them...ugh!

What edition was it you had of the Sorcerer soundtrack?

Esoteric/Reactive released a CD on 2011 (or was it 2012) which I bought and it was fine - it hadn't been "tangentized" by Edgar (indeed, I doubt Edgar had anything to do with it).

yes, the 2004 "tangentization" of Epsilon in Malaysian Pale was awful - sounded like he just slapped a load of Korg M1 over the top of it.

Thankfully EMI have made the original available again on CD (as part of their Froese 3CD set).

I honestly didn't realise the Esoteric/Reactive edition of Sorceror was tangentized!?!? I am bewildered.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Froese keeps screwing up

Thanks for the clue to the EMI Froese3CD set, I will look into that.
I have always regretted not buying Ypsilon back in the '70s. I remember it in the import section of a nice little college record store in Ft. Collins called "Bach or Rock" (say it fast). I did buy Phaedra, Aqua, and Macula Transfer there, which I still have.
One can understand when a stark problem with an old recording can stick in an artist's (or producer's) craw. An example is the dissonant cymbal strike in the Moodie's "For My Lady". The experienced listener expects to hear it, but in recent editions the volume of it is reduced a bit. McCartney completely removed the one "tinkle" sound in the new mix of "Maybe I'm Amazed", and I miss it. But I disagree with artists who decide that the original performances need remixing with new sounds and phrases to the point that they loose the original feel & structure. Are they really that insecure about the originals? In contrast, a 5.1 surround mix is expected to be different, but not too much. I accept that. But, if the original stereo recording is subject to an update, at least offer both for comparison.

I guess I'm fortunate I bought the original vinyl of Ypsilon in Malaysian Pale, found it in the audiophile section of the old Penquin Feather strores.
I bought it on a hunch and eventually recognized a piece from it on the TV show "Cosmos" when it first aired....Marouba Bay. Nice tune.
If you don't want to deal with a rerelease on CD...you can give a listen on Youtube...and see if these versions are how you remembered it.

You may find some unadulterated versions of this record posted on Youtube (to play with for your private listening pleasure).

Seems to me that studio work would be feasible, but Edgar never asks me for my opinion.

Hi all-
I just got the Sorcerer filmtrack cd, a 2011 issue.

There was a minor debate among us members awhile back, over the spelling of that album.
This should put it to rest, as I have two copies, one Eplison and one Ypsilon.
Moving soon, so if this doesn’t stop the debate, I’ll post pictures of both albums artwork.

But, if the original stereo recording is subject to an update, at least offer both for comparison.

yes, the 2004 "tangentization" of Epsilon in Malaysian Pale was awful - sounded like he just slapped a load of Korg M1 over the top of it.

Thankfully EMI have made the original available again on CD (as part of their Froese 3CD set).

I honestly didn't realise the Esoteric/Reactive edition of Sorceror was tangentized!?!? I am bewildered.

Funny now, patch storage and polyphony was a glimmer in our imaginations, I wish it had come about differently

Someone got the idea to string all Mike Pinder's Mellotron stuff end to end.
(No singing - sure that will be a relief to a few of you guys that don't like the MB).
.....just a compendium of what Mike did on the keys in the early days.
Not sure all of this is even Mellotron, as I believe Question and EGBDF had some synthesizer in it, but it is entertaining to hear the variety of sound from one guy.
Enjoy, ........or torture someone with it.

A nice bit, thanks.
The related videos on the page led me to the "Moody Blues - Higher & Higher/Out & In" video, a 1974 sound-only recording from Japan. Poorly recorded (probably from the audience), it is still an example of how good the MK2 can sound when the motor is servo controlled and the line voltage is stable. Pinder has full possesion of the instrument. Worth a listen.

Submitted for your amusement.

I believe that was the Osaka bootleg made by an audience member...not great quality but apparently the guy was close enough to Pinder to pick up his playing and it is pretty good stuff...
Pinder really has control of the volume pedal dand is oing some nice fades and does some good things on Out and In and at the conclusion of Have You Heard.
