mellotronworks II

mellotronworks II

2012-06-30 by Mike Dickson

Another teary Italian tune familiar to many (especially fans of boxing films) whose origins are more interesting than most. Believe it or not, this tune was part of a prize-winning one-act opera that Pietro Mascagni only wrote in 1888 with two months left of the competition time to run. Its first performance was something absurd, with the music causing such a sensation that the composer took over 40 curtains calls, which makes it sound like something from a Bugs Bunny cod-opera cartoon. When it got to the USA, producers were climbing over one another to put it on stage, the eventual victor (sort of) getting not only the music of Mascagni but the directorship of Oscar Hammerstein.

This tune won't actually appear on mellotronworks II - an album which is now well down the road to completion, with a projected release of the latter part of 2012 - but is instead a taster for what is in store.

Wow Mike !

Such a beautiful piece of music you chose to arrange and play so miraculously with the utmost taste. You never cease to amaze me.

Thanks for sharing...

Very nice indeed, Mike. Tell me, if you will, do you pick all the parts out by ear, or do you obtain a score and go from there?

Dear god. By ear? I suspect that would be close to impossible. No, I take everything from the score. The only changes I might make thereafter to whatever piece of music it is are in some staccato passages (where our old mate cannot keep up, although the light touch on my Mk V makes it surprisingly good at that) or to change key where there may be (ahem) 'tuning issues' elsewhere.

Hey Mike,

Beautiful arraignment as always. The Mellotron voicing’s sound brighter than with your old machine (as I recall). Is that just due to the new tapes

in the Mk V or did you just mix it that way? Great presence! What are you using for the “plucked “ sound?

Mike,

Many thanks for the new work and congrats on the tour de force!

I was especially looking forward to Bolero, but at about 10 minutes in it stopped abruptly. This was particularly disappointing given the nature of the piece. All that suspense and no climax!

I suspect that one needs something more than the standard 700 MB/80 Min CD-R as the bin file is over 800 MB. If so, it might be helpful to advise on the info page.

Mike,

I was trying to convert the BIN/CUE files to ISO so I could run in a virtual drive using Power ISO and it shows the file as corrupt.

I wonder if something happened during my download. Has anyone else had any issues with the BIN file?

I realize it is not an ISO but Power ISO should be able to convert and mount the BIN file as an ISO, at least is claims to be able to.

I have used it to mount ISOs in the past but have never used the convert function. Perhaps I can find another way to mount and

read it since I want to be able to listen on my laptop without burning to CD. I could always rip the CD back to wave or mp3 but

was hoping to skip that step. I’ll figure something out. I can’t wait to hear it. It has some of my favorites on it.

You could always download the MP3s directly from my web site via the links at the top of each page. They are ripped to 320 kb/s so they are as good as you'll get in that format.

FLAC to follow. :-)

Great stuff here.
I really enjoyed "Cantus..... and I'll be giving that many listens, I really found that appealing to my ear.
And "Pavane" is very very nice. Really like what's going on there.
This list is a like a best of selection...with many favorites.
The organ on "Symphony 3"...wow.

Thanks, Bob. Cantus was a VERY hard thing to pull off. (You ought to hear the first five takes...or maybe not)

The organ was played twice on different inversions and played through an octave divider each time. It's pretty sturdy stuff!

Thanks, Bob. Cantus was a VERY hard thing to pull off. (You ought to hear the first five takes...or maybe not)

The organ was played twice on different inversions and played through an octave divider each time. It's pretty sturdy stuff!

I really enjoyed "Cantus..... and I'll be giving that many listens, I really found that appealing to my ear.
And "Pavane" is very very nice. Really like what's going on there.
This list is a like a best of selection...with many favorites.
The organ on "Symphony 3"...wow.

Mike, I'm using a Linux app named K3B.

Btw, re. the update on your web page, an 80 min CD is only 700 MB. I think you meant a 90 Min CD which is 800 MB.

Will do - though I'm surprised that your software didn't tell you this right away. What were you using?

I'm unfamiliar with K3B, but I have used IMGBURN and it works fine. (I even downloaded the BIN file from the web site again to make sure it works) Can't you get that running under WINE?

The web site states that 'the file is about 800Mb and will require an 80 minute CDR', which is true. The entire CD runs to 79:40. You do not require a 90 min CD.

A wonderful set of tracks, Mike, thanks!
My favorite so far is Spiegel Im Spiegel. That MK2 flute always does it for me.

Thanks, Bruce. I confess I like it more on piano and violin. Like most Arvo Part it's a piece of music that dwells in a single, strange place.

Same for me re the flute, really. I resisted tuned tapes for a while, but had to give in in the end and get rid of some of the more egregious tuning errors in the Mk II flute which really all over the place.
