Dieter,
With all respect, without knowing what it is beforehand, I'm not clicking on that link.

I'm with you Frank. Trend Micro anti-virus flags it as a dangerous web site. Dieter tells me there is no problem.

I use MS Security Essentials and no red flags are raised. It's a Czech website that shows current time in an interesting way. Seems a little slow today, though. Last night it was real time and very cool.

Hello Frank

I understand not clicking on the link. I agree that it looks a bit like malware or spam, Clay warned me about that too.

If you want to know what it is before clicking: It's in fact a giant real life digital clock! You'll see what I mean when you visit the site.

Hey, I just found out what it is. It's a computer application that you can purchase and it syncs to your computer clock.

The Musical Box

2012-05-03 by Robert

Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing The Musical Box perform "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" at The Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.

They were fantastic and paid great attention to detail in every respect; the sound was great too!

Any of you "guys" who like the Gabriel era Genesis who have never seen The Musical Box perform before, I highly recommend you check them out.

For their encore, they played "The Musical Box" and "Watcher of the Skies". By then, several of the other concert goers who had the better seats on the floor area near the center had left, so I had the opportunity to see them up close. Their keyboardist had a beautiful black M400 Mellotron and it sounded wonderful to my ears. An RMI Electric Piano was sitting on top of the Mellotron and another keyboard was sitting on top of the RMI. He also had an organ that I "think" was a Hammond, but it was not a B3 and I don't believe it was a C3 or A100 either. There was a Leslie speaker sitting on the far right of the stage.

I don't remember ever being in such close proximity (approximately 20 feet) to a real Mellotron in all my life; what a thrill it was !

Cheers,

Robert

Sadly, Robert, you weren't close to a real 400 lat night either. It's a keyboard controller inside a Mellotron shaped cabinet. I know this, because I've seen it up close and I know that they don't use a real one. I think Pierre Vielleux was probably the only member/keys player in TMB who actually used one on stage.

Frank,

Thanks for correcting me. Shows you "guys" how little I really know about Mellotrons. But I'm learning, however slowly... I guess the back of the cabinet fooled me ? But whatever source of Mellotron samples that were used, sounded very authentic to these ears. Maybe I have Tinnitus too ! Not that I'm necessarily interested, do you know what is the source of the Mellotron samples that TMB use ?

BTW - my friend who I went to the concert is an acquaintance of Dave Kerzner of IK Multi Media Sampletron who was also at the show and he indirectly introduced me to Dave, who lives somewhere in South Florida. Dave did not point this (TMBs use of samples) out to me. Over enthusiastically, I asked / "begged" Dave if there was any possibility if someday in the future, I could visit him and see and hear his Mellotron. He replied "We don't do that" and walked away. Oh well...

With respect to the organ, do they use an M3 ?

Robert

Hi Robert,

Banks used an L122 early and a T500 later on. In the picture below, I believe that is an L100. I think someone on the list mentioned that TMB had a Memotron in the box, But I might be mistaken.

I had a chance to see them in Chicago a while back when they did ATOTT show, but missed it.

Regards,

John

I don't recall. I'd have to go back through my photographs or ask David Myers. He was the keyboard player the last time that I saw them.

I have to say that I saw them for both "Selling England" and "Lamb" and was pretty amazed at the detail they put into reproducing those Genesis shows.
i look at them as musical historians.

Sadly, Robert, you weren't close to a real 400 lat night either. It's a keyboard controller inside a Mellotron shaped cabinet. I know this, because I've seen it up close and I know that they don't use a real one. I think Pierre Vielleux was probably the only member/keys player in TMB who actually used one on stage.

Cheers,

Robert

Great shows, my brother and I had seen them come through Milwaukee quite a bit. I had seen the group 5 times here and Jim 8. Great attention to details where in the early show they would mock tuning the Taurus pedals as a distraction Gabriel would make it into part of the show. Nice pics.

I have to say that I saw them for both "Selling England" and "Lamb" and was pretty amazed at the detail they put into reproducing those Genesis shows.
i look at them as musical historians.

I had a chance to see them in Chicago a while back when they did ATOTT show, but missed it.

Tony Banks used a model T in the foxtrot days but it's an M-100 by SEBTP which is what you see in that picture.
. Procol Harum actually used an M-102 on Whiter Shade, always thought it was a B3....

TMB is as close to seeing Genesis in their prime as being there. It is shocking how accurate they are. I followed Genesis in the early 70's seeing 6-7 stops each tour (did that with PF before DSOTM too)
and these guys are getting down to the nuance, they are not a tribute band.

I am sure there are any number of people who would allow you to come see and play their Mellotron. We dodo dat.

Frank, John, Tom, Pete, Matthew, & Clay (did I miss anyone ?),

Thanks for the information and your comments. I really enjoyed the show. Usually, I don't keep up with all the local shows, because it is rare that any progressive rock band or other bands that I like come to South Florida anymore. I did see Big Elf opening for Porcupine Tree 2 years ago and The Legendary Pink Dots back in 2004. I missed The Moody Blues, but seeing that 2 key members are no longer with the band, maybe I didn't miss much ?

Here is a review of last nights concert for whatever it is worth ? It states that Michel Cloutier was the keyboardist and he played a "real mellotron". In all due respect, the reviewer probably knows about as much about Mellotrons as I, which is quite limited. So, my guess is that Frank is probably correct. All I saw was the back, which to me looked like a real M400 Mellotron cabinet. Any definitive information would be kindly appreciated.

And below, are a few older interviews with some of the members of TMB.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] The Musical Box

2012-05-04 by JAMES STRAUSS

Fortunately, I recently got as close to a Mellotron as you can get.
Including one of the great ones.
Thanks Frank.

Cheers,

Robert

Thanks Gino,

I saw Pink Floyd on tour in 1973 (I believe) for DSOTM and again in 1994 for The Division Bell album; another friend of mine from England is friends with Dick Parry their saxophonist. He got me a pass and I saw them in their final dress rehearsal at Joe Robbie (now Sun Life) Stadium in '94. I didn't have tickets to the concert the following evening (it rained), but the dress rehearsal was almost 2 hours long and the weather was perfect; I would estimate there were only a couple of hundred people there ? A day after the show, my friend borrowed my car so he could show Dick and 2 of the female vocalists (all very nice people) around town. They picked me up from work and we drove them back to their hotel in Fort Lauderdale. I remember speaking with Dick about Lol Coxhill who he knows personally and is also fond of.

Yes, I would have loved to see PF during the early days, but never did.

Hooking up with somebody locally who owns a working Mellotron in South Florida is about as likely as Emilio and Gloria Estafan inviting me over for dinner. Even some of my closest friends think it is strange that I have such a curiosity and interest in Mellotrons.

My companion, a beautiful 14 year old Dalmatian is sick and in the final chapter of her life. I have made a commitment not to travel anywhere until she is gone. When that day comes, I'm going to call on one of you guys and maybe my dream will come true.

Robert

TMB is as close to seeing Genesis in their prime as being there. It is shocking how accurate they are. I followed Genesis in the early 70's seeing 6-7 stops each tour (did that with PF before DSOTM too)
and these guys are getting down to the nuance, they are not a tribute band.

I am sure there are any number of people who would allow you to come see and play their Mellotron. We dodo dat.

I could be wrong... It's happened before. I think it was back in 2002 when I thought I was wrong about something and it turns out I wasn't.
In a message dated 5/3/2012 8:22:35 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, rmrmax@yahoo.com writes:

Michel Cloutier is the sixth keyboard player in The Musical Box. They go through keyboardists like Spinal Tap goes through drummers.

My best friend of 15 years, a Dalmatian named Violet, recently died, so I know what you are going through. Great elegant loving dogs...

best,

I'm sorry about your Dalmatian. We had a 12.5 year old named Pongo. We had him for 2.5 years until we had to put him to sleep last December.

I understand this too. The beagle I got when I was in elementary school is now at the end of his rather long life. (Named him Snoopy, what else is a kid going to name a beagle? Shiloh perhaps!) Always had a massive seizure problem, now with arthritis, stone deaf, vision going, and congestive heart failure.

Thank God though he still seems to enjoy his life, and still pesters me for his twice daily walk. When the day comes he seems to suffer, I'll put him down so he doesn't have to suffer.

Hoping all the best for you and your companion.

I sometimes think we treat animals more humanly than we do humans. Sitting there holding my dog as he gently went to sleep was god-awfully hard, but a beautiful way for him to go. How I wish I could have done the same for my mother!

I never thought so...but a different flavor of strange atmospheric noise. At this point talking about fidelity goes out the window.

In my experience, The orchestron was sonically totally without character. I was hoping that it would indeed be a superior, yet portable version of the mellotron. It succeeded In the portability stakes, but failed miserably in all other respects.
Needless to say, I was soon seen lugging another 400 in and out of my car up and down the land. So underwhelmed was I with the orchestron experience, I only kept it for six months or so.

I like the sound actually. I have the sample set from Pea Hix, which is just fine for me. My wife won't let me put any more keys in my studio.

Off topic: Just got my Leslie 147 amp back for my Leslie 145 cabinet. Completely rebuilt except for transformers. It is a beast!! It screams! Much clearer than other leslies I've used. Very excited...

I like what I've heard Mattias do with the orchestron.

I agree... I like his Mellotron arrangements too.

Off topic: Just got my Leslie 147 amp back for my Leslie 145 cabinet. Completely rebuilt except for transformers. It is a beast!! It screams! Much clearer than other leslies I've used. Very excited...

The Orchestron does have a much lower fidelity than the tape instruments: Mellotron, Chamberlin, Birotron, but some of the sounds have an interesting graininess to them.

You guys probably know the Orchestron strings and are not impressed, but some of the other lesser known discs like the flute and cello are pretty good. The low fidelity of the flute almost sounds like a breathiness.

On a model A Orchestron, you can change the speed of the motor (and the fidelity of the sound) and this turns out to be a big help.

I did the soundtrack to a movie a couple of years back, and the director and me decided that the Orchestron and Optigan would be less noticeable than the other instruments.
We were basically after trying creating 'electronic silences'. The Orchestron and the Optigan wound up being perfect.

The Orchestron is certainly not a replacement for a Mellotron but I never thought of the it like that. I always thought it could be used to underpin a Mellotron sound if you were going to have both on one track.

Well...yes. In the same sense that Gravel Lasagne has an interesting crunchiness to it.

Hello everybody.

I've got a Mellotron, Orchestron and Optigan.

I don't see the Orchestron as a replacement for a Mellotron. It is a total different experience in sound, technique and playing. But, having all possible discs for the Orchestron, I can say that there are lots of great sounds. Recently I used French Horn, reversed piano and String Ensemble for a recording and I have to say, it sounds great. I will post the track here (there's also Mellotron in it) as soon as the artist decides to release it.

I've got some videos on Youtube (search "dietervanmarcke") which will show the differences in the two instruments.
I have to say that the motor of the Orchestron, at the time of recording these videos, was quite wobbly.

Well it's a moot point for me- the one I was looking at got pulled off of ebay for some mysterious reason. Kind of a relief actually.

That was pretty funny Mike!!
Orchestrons are good in their own way, just not comparable at all to a Mellotron. The sound is different, as is the feel of playing one.
But then it was advertised back then as mainly an improvement over the Mellotron's 8 second limit, and with improved portability. Of course, back then they didn't care as much whether you had an Orchestron, Birotron, Mellotron, or Chamberlin - as long as you didn't have to hire an orchestra.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] The Musical Box

2012-06-05 by Chris Dale

Hi Robert:
Sorry for responding late on the list to this. I've been so busy.
I saw the Musical Box in Toronto, and I think Clay of our list saw the same show I did but on a different night on the same weekend.
Yes, they are wonderful at recreating Gabriel-era Genesis - though I'm comparing their show to some old videotaped concerts my friend has.
I've never seen Genesis live at all :(
Tis true, the Musical Box don't use a real Mellotron live, as I asked about that. They admitted to me the truth as I told them I thought it sounded a little more like samples than a real tron. It just didn't sound ballsy and dirty enough to me. Of course, I was expecting it to be ear-splititngly loud but it wasn't. Also, I think the cabinet is larger than a real M400 so it could be more visual to the audience.
I'm sorry Dave Kerzner was a bit of a prick to you, though I don't think he owns Mellotrons anymore anyway, so it makes no difference.
I also want to reassure you that his behaviour towards you isn't representative of ANYONE in our list group. We're opinionated here, but we do all love and respect each other because - we got no one else I guess!
I've met several people on this list and through private e-mails, and can say I genuinely like every one of them, and that anyone here would be glad to show you their Mellotrons. It would also help you decide in making a purchase towards an original design, or a digital simulation.
If you ever make it up to Canada, you are welcome to see a Mellotron, Chamberlin, Optigan, Birotron and Orchestron.
If you want to see Talentmakers, you'll have to ask Mattias!
Cheers
Chris

Sadly, Robert, you weren't close to a real 400 lat night either. It's a keyboard controller inside a Mellotron shaped cabinet. I know this, because I've seen it up close and I know that they don't use a real one. I think Pierre Vielleux was probably the only member/keys player in TMB who actually used one on stage.

Cheers,

Robert

M3 / The Musical Box

2012-06-05 by Robert

Chris,

Congratulations on your M3; I hope you get many years of enjoyment playing it.

And thanks for your reply...

Regarding Dave Kerzner, I didn't mean to imply that he "was a bit of a prick" to me. He doesn't know me from "Adam", and I wasn't properly introduced to him by my friend who is only an acquaintance of Dave's in the first place. All my friend said was "this guy has a tron", so I approached him in a friendly manner. Although I had previously watched Dave's "Sampletron" video on YouTube some time ago, when I initially started to talk to him after the encore of TMB show, I didn't realize who he was; it was only right after the very brief conversation that we had, that I recognized him, but by that time it was too late. I'm sure Dave is a really nice guy like everyone on this list.

Yes, "TMB" show was wonderful and it brought back old memories of when I was a teenager and saw Genesis for their "SEBTP" and "LLDOB" tours when they came to South Florida.

Personally, I don't like when rock groups play unnecessarily "ear-splittingly loud", which unfortunately, has too often been the case. I prefer when the volume is at a more reasonable level like what I remember the old Genesis concerts were and TMB show I recently saw. Just my opinion...

Thanks for your gracious invitation; someday I will travel somewhere and visit somebody who has a working Mellotron.

Thanks,

Robert
