I want to lick it like an ice cream cone. And I that's toward the model in the photos, not so much the Tron. :D

Looking good! Thanks for posting in the Members area. The earlier picture didn't show up in your message. Did you get any new tapes with it?

No new tapes as the ones already on board were fairly recent anyway.
By the way, it was no ordinary EMI, as the guys had rebuilt, realigned, and generally made it something pretty special a few years back. Apparently there was still quite a bit of work to be done to make the EMI bits fit inside the standard cabinet, so it was not an easy job.
Mention also for the fantastically light action that Martin has created. It has never played this well before.
Cheers.

Andy,
Gorgeous instrument!
John and Martin sure know how to do them up correctly.
Mine came back in wondrous condition too.
Money very well spent, enjoy!

Andy,

Congratulations on the new cabinet, fit, and action on your Mellotron; it looks beautiful !

BTW - I love the piece "Calembel" that you posted on YouTube approximately 3 years ago. A beautiful epic melody, played, and recorded very nicely.

Keep up the good work...

Hey Andy-
A lovely machine and rebuild. Kudos to Martin and company. I saw the later photos, looks like you have a brass capstan. Wonderful!
I wonder how many of these 'trons will be around in 40 more years. What a legacy!

Thanks Bruce.
Legacy is a good word to use here. With so few machines built in the first place, and now even fewer surviving, big respect for those among us who are dedicated to keeping these machines going! For every machine that gets a rebirth is a day for celebration.
In 50 years time, people will see the pics and proclaim with one voice...... What the Hell is that? (Even more than they do now!)

On that note -

I don't know if this was a Streetly adjustment or not, but the action on the Mk V is so light that I have actually managed to play a proper trill on the Mk II flute for the first time ever (I think) without the tapes clattering and clicking. Stupendous job.

Brass capstans are generally better in roundness and runout. They also develop a light oxidisation which grabs the oxide face of the tape.

Best,

Martin:
My EMI unit also has a brass capstan.
Were all EMI Mellotrons made with them, or have you seen steel capstans in them as well?
When were brass capstans phased out?
