Thanks Clay,

I haven't had the microsampler long but it is easy and fun to use. It has 8 banks which can take 180 secs of samples at 48 khz, it has a range of 3 octaves but not the same 3 as the tron. These samples are 12khz it would only take 10 at 48 khz. It has minikeys but it is a lot easier to play than the microkorg. Has a built in sequencer which I haven't managed to work out how to use yet. Overall very good value for money.

Hi, tks, and so am I...I just bought a M-Tron pro...and as soon as I understand how this beast works I promise to self-indulge in never ending massive tron chords, brass, violins, accordion, whatever comes across...all minor of course...not a single 'happy' note...something like Tangerine Dream's "Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares" or Popol Vuh's "Aguirre"...on a loop....extremely boring and self-indulgent AND pretentious...all true qualities of a Tron lover.

Welcome Roberto!
A man with similar interests, I look forward to hearing your rendition of “Mysterious Semblance”, as I’m a major fan of T-Dream.
Most anything German, (except their cars) interests me, so bring it on!

Welcome Roberto,

I don't think there are any happy notes on a mellotron, even major chords sound miserable! I hadn't thought of it that way but the tron is a very self indulgent instrument, your proposed music sounds wonderful, please post it to the list.

Cheers

This is where I part ways. I don't love chords. It's all tension and release for me. Had to write a Copland-esque piece at work today...entirely linear and horizontal and not a "chord" to be found...just the vodka talking now.

Hi TOny,

Just what the doctor ordered this site...of course there's nothing else besides minors...just as Ian Stewart (Stones) used to say..."if the key is major I won't play it"!!!

Every e-mail is a big laughter! I really appreciate being here.

Thank y'all

I can't stand Glass! Steve Reich without the genius baggage. Roedelius is too juvenile for me, way too many major chords. It's all a gentle ballet now, isn't it?

I can't stand Glass! Steve Reich without the genius baggage. Roedelius is too juvenile for me, way too many major chords. It's all a gentle ballet now, isn't it?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Self-indulgent crap

Yuri: Do you think it's "personal, petit-bourgeoise and self-indulgent"?

Yevgraf nods and says "yes".

Yevgraf: "I lied. But he believed me, and it struck me through to see that my opinion mattered. The girl knew what it meant, what it was going to mean. They couldn't survive what was coming in the city. I urged them to leave and live obscurely somewhere in the country where they could keep themselves alive."

You know, since seeing that famous movie many years ago I've contemplated this question of self indulgenceny for some time, .........................all music (and art for that matter) is self indulgent.
So what.
I'll throw this one in.......
I'd rather listen to 24 hours of this, - than 30 seconds of Kiss.
(hey...I rhymed!) and I'm so glad Col. Kurtz found a paying gig.............

I can't stand Glass! Steve Reich without the genius baggage. Roedelius is too juvenile for me, way too many major chords. It's all a gentle ballet now, isn't it?

This is where I part ways. I don't love chords. It's all tension and release for me. Had to write a Copland-esque piece at work today...entirely linear and horizontal and not a "chord" to be found...just the vodka talking now.

I like both....

My interest in progressive rock and other pop groups in the 70's, directly and indirectly influenced me to become interested in jazz music. Thelonious Monk is one of my favorites.

Maybe Errol Garner, and most definitely Oscar Peterson. Although when you are up at that level, it’s like you say Jesus, I say Mohammed. Room for more than one for sure. Not to say that the Monk is not sitting right up there with them. I will have to spend a little more time with his stuff.

Errol Garner, Oscar Peterson, etc.

2012-04-12 by Robert

John,

I love Errol Garner & Oscar Peterson too !

I recommend that you check out Art Tatum; I think he was big influence on Oscar Peterson.

Also, check out Mal Waldron.

With the resurgence of the Mellotron, hopefully more artists will try to utilize it effectively in some sort of jazz based music, even though it seems, it was not used that successfully in the past.

That’s the thing about those guys. They were all in a league of their own. Errol may have loved the Tron. One of the things I really enjoy besides about the best left hand I have ever heard is that some of his recordings sounded like they were recorded at our local bar, out of tune upright and all. Combined with his grunting and intensity, well you’re right. The Tron would last about ten bars, and then tapes would be flying out of it.

The Tron & Jazz

2012-04-12 by Robert

Roberto,

Maybe you are right ?

There are many artists I like (i.e. Michael Mantler, Terje Rypdal, Robert Wyatt, Eberhard Weber, etc.) that release albums that are jazz oriented and I think the Mellotron would add a beautiful touch to. Some of these musicians actually used the Mellotron in some of their albums in years past.

Although I like Robert Wyatt's cover of "Round Midnight" just as it is, if Mike Dickson (for example) was so inclined, I bet he could layer a Mellotron part to it and it would work beautifully.

Hi,

I'm a huge Wyatt's fan..so much that I don't collect songs...the only exception being Moon in June...and Rock Bottom still amazes me and moves me after all these years...a CHarles Cross award well deserved...Mantler's Hapless Child , Rypdal etc are what some people call EUropean Jazz (should be ECM) even Hatfield made great use of the Tron...as opposed to American jazz, and there (European)I have to agree that the Tron has a place...but otherwise...I can't see the Jazz giants into it..COltrane and Tron ? Unlikely...ALbert AYler (when I'm out my mind I listen to it...beauuutiful!)...but not again..so that's the way I see it...maybe I'm wrong...I love to stretch boundaries...but somehow certain things don't cross...
ANyhow...I love this group...finally some people who knows AND cares about music...a lot to learn for me...that's for sure.

thank y'all,

I think that the Tron and jazz are back to back to each other...the Tron is soooo slow, it has a lot of delay...so much so that most of these players would probably give up on the first chords...besides...it's OUT of tune...foreverrrr...thank God!

I also love EG and OP. Monk just sounds so schizo to me, in a good way. He almost sounds nuts at times, and I like that. OP is like a down comforter on a cold winter night, you spend all day thinking about it.

Art Tatum is like an insane mathematician with a piano. I'm afraid that sometimes his playing transcends music.

Re: The Tron & Jazz

I am also a fan of Robert Wyatt, I think he only used the mellotron on the first Matching Mole album. His tron playing is interesting, I wouldn't say that he is technically a great keyboard player, he was I think a much better drummer.

I think anyone who is a very good piano player is not likely to be that interested in the mellotron because of it's limitations.

Often the people who played mellotron on the albums of 60's and 70's weren't primarily keyboard players.

Woolly Wolstenholme my favourite mellotron player was largely self taught and and I don't think he was a great piano player.

I would be intrigued to know what Oscar Peterson did with his mellotrons, does anybody know of any recordings?

Mark

PS My piano tuner always complains about the delay when he plays my tron but I don't notice it. I wonder if I ever become a good piano player I will lose interest in the tron. Fat chance of that!

I'm a huge fan of Robert Wyatt and love the way he tortured the Mellotron on Matching Mole's first record, but to me jazz and the Mellotron just don't go together. The playing limitations of the instrument are one thing, but there is something a little deeper. Jazz (to me) was always about 'precise imprecision', or in other words the way that very good musicians can play together in a way that sounds all over the map but which is actually pretty tight. On the other hand, the Tron is the exact opposite - it's imprecise precision, in that few notes are really in tune (or are only close to it) and has absolutely no way of playing anything very quickly. I'd have thought most jazz types would run a mile from a Mellotron!!

There should be no delay when you play your 'tron. Over adjustment of everything creates this awful characteristic!

Re: [newmellotrongroup] The Tron & Jazz

2012-04-13 by tronbros

Check out John Medeski. He can play wild stuff on a 'tron, even an unserviced one! A mellotron can be made to have a super light playing action that is redponsive and fast if needed. The standard setting that left the factory was a belt and braces adjustment to defeat any climatic change or mishandling. Hence the block chord playing most of the time.

As far as I'm concerned there isn't, my piano tuner used to play one in an NZ band in the 70's he insists there was delay in the one he used to play as well. I forgive him because he does a great job on my piano.

Re: The Tron & Jazz

There is a good example of fast tron playing in Camel's Never let go as well

The standard setting that left the factory was a belt and braces adjustment to defeat any climatic change or mishandling. Hence the block chord playing most of the time.

I would be intrigued to know what Oscar Peterson did with his mellotrons,
does anybody know of any recordings?

I haven't been able to trace anything - I get the impression that he used
his MkV (didn't someone come on here a year or two back to say they'd bought
it?) to work out his horn charts - I s'pose it was the only keyboard in the
mid-'70s that you could even attempt that on.

As far as I'm concerned there isn't, my piano tuner used to play one in an
NZ band in the 70's he insists there was delay in the one he used to play as
well. I forgive him because he does a great job on my piano.

Mark, what's your piano tuner's name? Just wondering whether he recorded
'back in the day'.

Often the people who played mellotron on the albums of 60's and 70's weren't primarily keyboard players.

PS My piano tuner always complains about the delay when he plays my tron but I don't notice it. I wonder if I ever become a good piano player I will lose interest in the tron. Fat chance of that!

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: The Tron & Jazz

2012-04-13 by tronbros

Okay Vance and all you mellotron owners....

Pads: a good pad should come from silence to a full sound in 1/4 turn of the adjustment screw. From there you should add 1/2 turn further to establish a good setting.

Rollers: a good roller should come up to full speed from stall in 1/2 turn max. From there you should add 1 full turn to establish a good setting.

Keys: undo the backnut until the key drops away from the bar. Now tighten the nut until the key just touches the rubber strip and add 1/8 turn. This is the correct back pressure. Too little and the key will flap, too much and it will feel like a girder.

Key depth: press down a black ket between two white keys at either end of the keyboard. The key should be no more than 1/6th of an inch above the white key otherwise the action will feel shallow and 'orrible.

If you have the above settings your tron will be a delight. If you don't, it won't.

Best,

Martin

Re: The Tron & Jazz

So it's safe to assume that the keyboard adjustment screws shouldn't look like this? http://www.spheremusic.com/userimages/Img97883.jpg

I've just set my keyboard up following these instructions. It seems that I can press the keys almost all the way down before sound begins. This is correct? The keys feel very loose, although a bit more mechanically noisy, and I can play fast runs on them. It's also very easy to "feed" the note by gently pressing down on the keys once the pads make contact with the tapes.

Re: The Tron & Jazz

2012-04-13 by mellotronmadness

In defence of #1565 she has her problems but over adjustment of the keyboard is not one of them and I do not believe there is any delay I can play trills on her.

My main problem is taming the sound output. I can get the sound I want if I record it and then use software to process the recording but not playing live and through hardware. I expect a more expensive and tube amplifier might do the trick.

There were 2 effects in "Self indulgent Crap" that I really liked: there were 7 extra notes below G and some of the notes were heavily reverbed and some weren't which gave an interesting effect.

At some stage I think I will also split the keyboard in the sampler with string chords on the bottom 8 notes and mark II flute on the higher notes and also map the keyboard across the stereo output. A sort of ersatz Mark V.

If it is the same Neville Claughton (and why not, I've never heard of
another one) he was the bass player in Link, best remembered for the
tune "Only Time Could Let Us Know".

The interplay is done with a Brazilian instrument called "cuíca" that produces that funny sound....

Well the bit with tron and chimpanzee noises was quite funny otherwise I think root canal work beckons.

Good thing we all don't like the same music.

I love the idler affixed to the table for tape loops, Brilliant.

If you are into the old scholl stuff there is a very very inexpensive , very fine software package that uses an matrix interface to bring together emulations of classic stuff.

Hollowsun.com also has an interesting collection of "Music Labratory Machines" plugins for very reasonable prices.

We use to glue corks onto pieces of wood screwed to larger pieces of wood, then put pins into the corks. We would put the tape machine on its back and place the cork/pin apparati around the room, stretch the tape to our "idlers" to make really long loops. My wife thought we were nuts.

I love Berna. It takes me back to my earliest production days.
We used old idler and pencils for tape loops.
I still use tape loops wspecially when my boomerang won't cooperate.

Well the bit with tron and chimpanzee noises was quite funny otherwise I think root canal work beckons.

Good thing we all don't like the same music.
