Holy fuck. Frank, your project is calling you! The good news is the red
lens cap is intact. We have to find the back story on this bit of
debauchery...

Ever get that "just fucked senseless" feeling? If their music was
anywhere near as bad as that paint job, you know people died. The only
positive I can think of is that with all the money you'd need to sink
into it, the price is right.

Just the tape storage box is $600!

We used to restore machines like this monstrosity.  They are soul destroying to work on as you get them back into shape, turn them on for the first time and hear multiple problems. You then end up taking them apart again. The hole in the cabinet to accomodate the flywheel is a strong indication that all is no right.  I wouldn't necessarily trust the capstan.  It's all restorable but life is too short.  Unless it goes for $500, leave well alone because you are going to spend a fortune.

So far = about $2170.00 - for SMS, tape frame with tapes, belt, tape spill box, new pots, rollers, springs, and pads (not including preamp cards). Not to mention getting rid of that horrid 4-track style Martian Blue with the '60's Chevy Van artwork!

This blue bastard is located in Prospect, Connecticut. Isn't that
one of the former Sound Sales locations?

And doesn't a purchase date of 1971 seem a bit early to bag serial #1018?

Yeah, that provenance makes no sense.  Purchased 1971 for $400?  I'd buy 1981 at the beginning of the DX-7 blight, maybe.

Re: BluTron on ebay

And that painting looks like Dr. Seuss's take on an unpublished Roger
Dean YES cover - the one with the lactating Reindeer circling the
earth while a unicorn supplied by James Thurber looks on...

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: BluTron on ebay

2008-02-14 by Bruce Daily

I am still trying to figure out the reason for the
flywheel hole. Bearing replacement? Or, maybe the
flywheel & capstan tried to escape when the tapes &
frame were being butchered.

A (un)healthy layer of dust.

If it plays at all I bet the high register tapes
are a bit muffled. Look how close they are to the
motor (and its mag field).

Now I wonder what kind of custom engineering may
have been applied to the guy's guitars.

I wondered if it might be for pitch bending*, without needing to have
the top removed.

Jim Bailey

*I seem to recall reading here (or more likely, the old list) that this
is sometimes called pitch "diving". If such a thing were done using a
muff cover, would that make it muff diving?

No. It is a Feng Shui positive energy alignment portal. It is for
balancing the flow of energy within the Mellotron. It will be much
more harmonious and balanced with that big ass hole.

Yeah, glory, glory, hallelujah.
I'm thinking that, based on the liberal abuse applied
to the blue beasty, the cutout may be more for the
purpose of "capstan assistance" than a pitch dive.
That is one Hell of a bunch of trouble for the
occasional pitch tug, especially when you could simply
open the lid. But then, the level of "tron rape" is
so extreme, who knows what anybody was thinking at any
time. *sigh* Another one bites the dust.

It just occurred to me that the interior parts have the color of the
residue left behind after a flooded basement dries out.
